Attention non-artists who commission artists: don’t fuckin do this???
Actually had someone do this to me too. Was doing a art stream, it took me over 2 hours to do his inked commission, he got a refund cause ‘it took too long’ that he figured I wasn’t going to do it after I gave him the file.
Don’t do this. Do not.
I’ve had this happen to me with a $350 comic :/ I had already finished it, it was full color, 6 panels and had a full bg in every panel. I was lucky in that I didn’t spend him money yet, but it left me without funds. I’ve also had the above happen to me as well.
Don’t do this shit to artists. We’re people too. Drawing for you is more than a hobby. It’s a job.
Use Paypal Invoices.
I cannot stress this enough. That shit helps A LOT when it comes down to Paypal refunds/disputes. There’s a description box that let’s you put in what the product is/how long it’ll take/yadda yadda, and then there’s another little memo box that only you and paypal can see where you can say it’s a digital commission and doesn’t require shipping (So Donald Mcfuck can’t say that they never got their commission). And there’s also a box for your Terms & Conditions where you can say, if you have any conflicts/want a refund - email me, or you can actually tell the user that this is a digital commission and they won’t be getting a hard copy of it.
ARTISTS. PLEASE USE PAYPAL INVOICES. it will SAVE you. And to: the people who do this to artists – Fuck you. It’s okay if you change your mind and want a refund. But freaking TALK to us and let us know what’s going on. Let us WORK with you.
ALSO A HUGE TIP: Invoices paid will automatically set up a shipping notice which, if not fulfilled, can land you in SERIOUS hot water with PayPal. Since a lot of artists don’t print and ship the commissions, this is a huge problem.
However! Totally manageable. Just go to your PayPal, scroll down to find Seller Preferences
>> Shipping Preferences
>> Display Ship Button. Make sure all the boxes are unchecked. Then you’re all set!
As a big supporter of artists, don’t you ever fucking dare fuck over an artist like that. Like don’t. And if they take their time to do a good job, don’t shit all over them for it! Don’t be a fucking ass hole. Just don’t. These people put a LOT of work and time and effort into their artwork. Just don’t be that guy. Often times these artists aren’t even getting what they deserve in compensation.
I am very grateful my customers have been good to me, but I’m spreading the word.
I’m adding to this as a commissioner. DO NOT commission an artist that doesn’t use invoices. DO NOT commission an artist that only accepts payments through PP friends and family. I commissioned a very expensive piece of art from an artist I’d long admired. They insist on payments sent as “friends and family” and though I knew better, I implicitly trusted them so I sent the payment. Their 8-10 week period for finishing the commission passed without a word. They didn’t respond to emails, and only got back to me after a tumblr message well past the 10 week period. They promised a sketch the next week, failed once more to deliver within the timeframe they suggested, until I got a hasty sketch the next day after mentioning starting the refund process. The sketch didn’t favor my character in my opinion and, given the artist’s history of follow-through, I told them I wanted to continue with the refund instead. They proceeded to argue with me over my claim to a full refund, insisting I pay them for the sketch (that was mostly construction; it was definitely unfinished). Despite them not following through with any of their own standards and not touching base with me about needing an extension, they wanted to keep my money. Since I sent the money through friends and family, disputing it would’ve been INCREDIBLY difficult. Luckily I had emails to document the lapsed service because otherwise it’s just my word against theirs. With an invoice, I would’ve been protected too. I could dispute the charge through PP and show them “look, I paid for this and didn’t get it.” Protect yourself and don’t commission without invoices.

do you have any tutorial on how to paint gold? your gold motifs are so beautiful and it's something i struggle with. Any advice would be appreciated
Thanks! Uhh it generally shifts based on the texture & shape I’m going for, but here’s my general process / rule of thumb:
Or if you lock layer transparency — or however its called in Photoshop — you can use a textured brush to quickly pepper in some highlights & shadow to add a gold-ish effect:
I forgot one more thing! Adding extra details can help make gold pop even more in your paintings. Putting on some well-place highlights, a little blur, and a lil overlay layer makes a world of difference:
Words to replace said, except this actually helps
I got pretty fed up with looking for words to replace said because they weren’t sorted in a way I could easily use/find them for the right time. So I did some myself.

not to be a lesbian on main but I want to be in the Old West and make meals for the cowhands when they come home and when the toughest most badass cowgirl comes to grab her serving I look at her calloused hands and see a deep gash so I immediately go bandage her up even though she protests it’s just a scratch and I rip off some of my petticoat to make a bandage and she looks away blushing and as I tie it firmly around the wound I tell her she has to be more careful because it would be a damn shame to lose those hands of hers around here and she blushes again but she maintains eye contact this time and keeps her hand in mine and softly says “yes ma’am”
ur legally only allowed to relate if ur art only ever gets 0-500 notes
Hey artists, C. Spike Trotman, founder of Iron Circus Comics, just posted an invaluable thread on depicting different types of black hair. I’d do the thing where you screencap the whole thread and post it but it’s just too long (which is great because it’s a whole lot of useful information!) Give her a follow while you’re there.
Anyway, go check it out. I just wanted to save it and share it because I didn’t know how much I didn’t know!
How to put “wrote fan-fiction” on your résumé:
Leveraged an inventory of established fictional character and setting elements to generate a disruptive custom-curated narrative entertainment asset.
I worked in HR, handling applications and interviews, and if someone turned in that string of techno babble nonsense, I would have rejected them out of hand.
A resume doesn’t need to sound fancy or overly technical, it needs to tell us why we should hire you.
“Independent novelist/writer” is more than sufficient here. If you want to express the skills that fan fiction taught you, something like, “creative writing, editing, and publication,” will get you a lot further than… Whatever that just was.
A resume should be tailored to the position, if you can afford the time and energy for that. But if not, then just think about what writing got fandom taught you. How to respond to criticism, how to present a professional pubic face, how to correct punished mistakes, creative thinking, project planning, persuasion via emotional leverage, html formatting, office suite fluency.
There are a lot of actual, marketable skills that go into fan fiction.
