Sometimes I think about how the practice of "the 4 humors" was top medicine in the Middle Ages. Badeni must have surely known about this. How would they be diagnosed? My bet would be:
Oczy=melancholic.
Badeni=choleric.
I present you my first english Thornute fanfiction!

The adventures of prankster Badeni and his victim, Oczy
-ep. 2-
Oczy falls asleep in the grass while waiting for Badeni to come deliver his bread portion, as Badeni's taking more time than usual that day.
As Badeni arrives, he finds the sight whimsical; and, coincidentally, he's in a surprisingly good mood too. So he scoops around for a twig and plants it inside Oczy's bun without him noticing. Afterwards, Oczy gets shaken awake, receives his bread, travels to the city to share it among the beggars and all that song. Then, as he returns to the barn and prepares for bed he undoes his bun - only to find the twig inside.
He gets quite embarrassed realizing he's been wearing it everywhere he went. The next day, when he meets up with Badeni again, he speaks up.
"Hey, Badeni, did you put a twig in my hair yesterday while I was asleep?"
Badeni, all the while summoning his poker face and his haughty tone too, responds: "Why would I do such a thing, wasting my time with something so ridiculous? 💅 It's beneath me, you probably got it while rolling around in the grass."
Oczy doesn't dare utter another word, thinking that Badeni's too smart to be contradicted by him, out of all.
And so he gaslights himself into thinking he really got it from the grass...
A twig from a tree...
While sleeping in plain field.
helloo!! I loved your Thornute college au fic, Vinland Saga is so short of good fics, it was great!!! Do you ever plan on continuing it?<3 or write any more thornute?
Hello! Aww you are so kind to reach out to me, I don't think I'll be writing new Thornute fics as I'm into another OTP at the moment, and I've already written so so many of this couple hehe, but I *should* kick myself into continuing the college AU as it's been a story very dear to me. Thank you so much for reading and letting me know how you felt about it! <3
The adventures of prankster Badeni and his victim, Oczy
-ep. 1-
After a long, arduous day of research, on the rare occasions where he doesn't drop dead on the floor, Badeni would find himself longing to blow off some steam. In lack of other distractions, he watches Oczy dallying around the barn and plans to make a little fun of him. So he calls Oczy to come inside, grabs his face and gives him a little kiss; also he may or may not have sunk his teeth into his bottom lip just enough to spark a sensation. Before Oczy could ask any questions, Badeni chuckles, slaps his face gently and walks away in silence.
Meanwhile Oczy falls on his ass, trying to make out what in the world just happened. The scene doesn't sediment in his mind until nighttime, which he spends simmering inside and trying to find an explanation.
He doesn't acknowledge the blush that settled on his cheeks the entire time since, but he rolls in his blankets left to right, right to left, playing the scene in his mind over and over.
His thoughts are so loud he might just voice them at this point.
'What's up with Badeni? What has gotten into him this time and why would he do that to me? Was that a...kiss, or have I just imagined things? Of course it was a kiss you idiot, his lips touched mine after all. But...why? Why did he kiss me? *Badeni*...kissed *me*. Argh, I must be reading too much into it. Villagers and priests kiss all the time, as some sort of greeting. It's like a form of reverence. No reason to think it was anything special... Yeah, I think I'll stop myself before I start overthinking.
...
Wait...
...
So that means Badeni does *that* with others too...?
(***Please stand by, we are experiencing technical difficulties***)
(***Windows re-start sounds***)
No... There's no reason to make any assumptions. Not yet. I can simply ask hi—No, no, bad idea you idiot. It'll look like you are making a big deal out of it. Like it affects me or something. I will just stand by, act normally and observe how Badeni interacts with the other villagers before drawing any conclusions.
Yes. Yes. I'll do just that for the moment... Now I shall sleep.
...
...
...
WAIT DIDN'T HE ALSO BITE MY—'
Meanwhile, Badeni is resting in his church bed with a slight smirk on his lips.
'I bet he's wrecking his brains right now.'
Making sense of Orb: On The Movements Of The Earth
-Badeni's last movement? Letter talk!-
Anyone who scrolled through the Okubade tag in the past months must have stumbled upon my stupidly long essays so, not wanting to disappoint, here's another one. This time I'm planning to refurbish an old theory I posted on the Okubade server and concerns Badeni's rather emotional tone in the letter he left behind for Grabowski, and how it was probably not what he had in mind when he first devised the plan.
I see Orb as a story about causality, and most events that happen are meant to serve a greater purpose whether it is revealed or left to our interpretation. And in this case, the scene I'm thinking about is Badeni's decision to postpone writing the letter when he first planned to. Was it solely to increase the stakes when the Inquisitors were coming for them, or something bigger?
In order to answer that, I'm switching fast forward to the moment we find out what exactly that letter is saying.
Is it something Badeni would have written back then? Probably not. Let's take the events one by one.
He sits at his desk, quill in hand, when Oczy knocks and interrupts him. He's come to take Badeni downtown for their hangout, and Badeni decides he will write the letter later. At the tavern, Oczy expresses his desire to attend university to which Badeni reacts with disapproval. He doesn't seem like someone who would care for some nameless beggars' education, or even to express compassion to his fellows overall, doesn't he?
Indeed we can argue that he has grown as person up until this point, the simple fact that he's been reproducing Oczy's journal in secret being an obvious proof - but, I would argue that while his growth has been in motion, it hasn't been perfected just yet.
So, what happened then? Well, perhaps one last, fateful conversation with Oczy happened. Which provoked one last shift in Badeni's beliefs; and in his person, as a whole.
While Badeni still displayed his former arrogance at the tavern and wouldn't give Oczy much credit, Oczy manages to destroy him from inside out. Not only he stands up to Badeni out of all people, who has been his superior until now, but formulates good enough arguments to both engage his attention and reduce him to silence. And to put a cherry on top (and a kick to his ego), while trying to convince Oczy to let go of his insane plan to attack the Inquisitors, Oczy manages to counterattack his every point and even when Badeni brings up Oczy's own belief against him, it still doesn't work. In the end, Oczy, a peasant, a commoner, someone whom Badeni has lived to see as inferior, manages to defeat him in a battle of wits. If this wasn't a most humbling experience for Badeni, then none of it was.
And that was just addressing the contents of the letter. What about the tone? "I know I'm not held in the highest regards", "I know my words hold little sway", "I beg you from the bottom of my heart". Is this something 'normal' Badeni would have said/written? Does he even have a heart? Good question.
They ring to me as the words of someone desperate. I imagine what his state of mind must be in this moment: his plans failed; the heliocentric theory he'd worked on and the name he'd tried to secure for himself will go to naught; he couldn't persuade Oczy to give up on his plan to die either, even if he's been doing everything in his power to protect him. He's chosen him over, and over, and over again. He told him to leave first, he told him to take a horse and escape, he begged him not to die. He's planned to meet him again some day, yet that turned out to be the last time he saw him before his imminent death. There's no denying the utter distress he feels in this moment.
Therefore, and that's where my personal interpretation chimes in, after witnessing first-hand how he couldn't manage to persuade someone he really cares about using logical arguments, he takes a completely new approach instead: he speaks from heart to heart. Perhaps there's a hint of regret? He didn't do that before and lost Oczy, so he wouldn't lose a second time - if not Oczy, at least his voice, his words to the world.
Therefore, if the first letter might have sounded completely different - logical, neutral and devoid of any consideration, then this new letter brings out Badeni's perfected movement. His last interaction with Oczy shatters him into tiny pieces and reconstructs him into who he is during his last days - it pushes his character development into a brand new tier. And we know how important this letter was to Badeni - after all, Oczy doesn't spare him for the letter's sake, but for his sake. So Badeni could have used these last 10 minutes to flee to safety, but instead, he chooses to use them to make sure the letter is delivered safely via the tunnel.
Here's what I imagine happens:
Badeni sits down, spreads the paper and takes the quill. Then he wastes no time and starts writing, as he already knows what he wants to write. He had this plan for a very long time, he made up his mind earlier that day and he had the text memorized already.
However, he stops for a very brief moment. The same words no longer sit right with him, not after his last moments with Oczy. So he crumples the paper and takes another one, this time the words flowing from his heart rather than his mind. Perhaps even he is surprised to what's happening... And not interested in keeping up a façade any longer.
And writes down everything from his heart as if it were Oczy's.
Ok horrifically deranged (blond) bishōnen before you lies a Sophie's Griffith's Choice:
Option one: You accomplish your lifelong dream—reaffirming your core belief that you are a god amongst men—by sacrificing all the people who helped you get to this point, most notably the dark haired man you are undoubtedly in love with who made you question wanting your dream for the first time in your life.
You will lose your humanity and your ability to love in the process.
You will not understand the gravity of this until it is much too late.
or
Option two: You forgo your lifelong dream—dismissing your core belief that you are a god amongst men—and attempt to live as just a man. You will gain something far greater than your dream in the process: your humanity and your ability to love. However, the powers that be will not be kind to your previous attempt to surpass them and will smite you down for your insolence. You will damn yourself alongside those who tried to help you achieve your dream, but you get to live beside the dark haired man for however long you two have.
You two will not have long. You will lose him.
You will not understand the gravity of this until it is much too late.
Never thought of a parallel between Badeni and Griffith before but you know what, I'm down for it.
Sun and Moon this, Cat and Dog that...
Forget it! Who in your ship is ? and who is !
Forget about the ole' Sun-Moon symbolism. How about Earth-Mars?
As I was pitching ideas for an Orb tattoo, one thing led to another and I started thinking about Badeni's and Oczy's little experiment on that mountain slope.
Not shying away from reading into stuff, I started wondering: what if the celestial bodies they represent aren't just some random devices to prove a point, but they might connect to them as people and the roles they play in the story?
Oczy - he represents the Earth. He's the static world which is perceived to be devoid of beauty, when in reality it was but a misconception meant to keep it/him in the dark. Once reaching out for the truth, the Earth 'started moving' naturally and revealed all the beauty contained inside, like it/he was meant to be.
Badeni - he represent Mars. And that's where it gets interesting. In the Orb universe, Mars is perceived heavily through Earth's lenses. It/he is already part of 'the beauty up there', but at the same time there's an 'imperfect' move in his orbit which is but a gross misunderstanding or misconception of other people over it/him - a central theme to Badeni's arc. Once it/he is figured out, it/he moves in perfect harmony with the Earth, as equals. In fact, it's interesting that Gras takes up studying Mars (which becomes the engine of the second arc) and points Oczy to seek Badeni out at the same time.
Given that Earth and Mars are 'sibling planets', it also serves to mirror Oczy's and Badeni's soulmate-like and foil-like bond.
What if Orb were written by Mary Renault
I blame Victor Hugo for making me an Ancient Greek yaoi ships fanatic
For the international women's day on March 8th I went really deep into okubade yuri-verse ♀️♀️ happy how it turned out so I'll link it on my profile! <3
