They cycle of paper in Australia, with recycled paper

First the paper is collected, and then it is taken to a manufacturing plant where it is sorted, deinked and bleached (without chlorine). Then the paper is manufactured, it is refined and coated. Then the paper is converted to its intended use, then it is used. Once it has been used, it is recycled again and this brings us to the beginning of our looped cycle again.

To manufacture sustainability friendly paper in Australia, you must take into account firstly where you source the materials from. Many of the mills in Australia use recycled paper in conjunction with virgin fibers to produce a quality product. Using recycled paper reduces greenhouse gas emissions by 45%.

You must also think about the consumption of water that will be used. Where you will get it from, and what properties will it leave after it has been used. What animals may be affected by this waste. The energy involved in making the paper and also transporting it.

Sustainable Graphic Design

As a graphic designer you should adhere to ecologically sustainable design practices and operations. For an industry that deals heavily with many resources, it is essential to our environment that we are careful in this area. As much as is possible for you as an individual, as a company and as a industry, we need to reduces waste and re-uses or recycles materials and think of the effect of the products that we are using, even down to the ink we are using or the amount of electricity we have consumed over the last year. – Before you design something, think about the impact that it will have on the environment.

Ethics of a designer

It is important that the designer recognizes that their work is in a professional field, with that it must be up to a professional standard. They must be honest in all their dealings with clients/potential clients, and be honourable in all that they do. They have a responsibility to the community as a whole, as well as to there client. They must not copy or use other designers works and pass them as there own, it is important to respect other designers intellectual property. In other words, don’t plagiarizes your fellow designers work. Come up with your own ideas and concepts, it’s more fun that way. Also, steer clear of free pitching, this is bad for yourself as a designer and also for the industry as a whole.

When you work as a designer, you must lay out what work you will be completing for you client and write a brief. One this brief is signed off on by your client, it is your bible. This is your contract with your client and they must stick to it to, an pay what is due to you. This is very important. You are worth what you are due, don’t ever forget that.

The Average wage of a Graphic Designer ranges from around....... Although this is an average wage, this does not include the first year out of University. The average wage for a novas designer is around $35k.

Scope of the Australian Graphic Design Industry

The Size of the Graphic design industry has rapidly increased over the last three decades. This is due to the way that society as a whole and the government has seen the need for this industry and the fact that these days most everything is centered around design. The Competitiveness of this fields has also played a part in the boom of this industry, as well as access to computers and ever improving software.

The figures below show from the Australian Census show the growth over the last 30 years. This is a good indication that the industry is an ever increasing field of work and is sustainable. This industry does revolve around the love and the thrill of the work that you are doing. It is an industry that loves to overuse its junior staff and always want the most creative minds. So to stay in this industry you have to be on top of the game, you don’t just have to be able to create good graphics, but you also have to be an ideas person. Someone who thinks and can solve problems or who creates a whole new spin on an existing problem.

The DIA conducts regular national surveys to determine fees and salary conditions in the design sector. The results of these are made available to members as Practice Notes.

The information surveyed in December 2011 has been released as Practice Note 014 Fees and Salary Survey (Issue H). A Note has also been issued for Student members, PN 024 Graduate Salaries (Issue F).

Practice Note 014 Issue G consists of a summary of the survey findings for surveys carried out in December 2008, December 2006 and December 2005. It replaces PN014 Issue F.

Previous summary figures are included in this issue for comparison purposes. Members looking for more comparison information should refer to Practice Note 023 - Historic Fee & Salary Information or obtain Issues A, B, C, D E and F of PN014.

Case Summary

BP and Woolworths battle it out over green strip light trademark

In Woolworths Limited v BP p.l.c. [2013] ATMO 61, the Australian Trademark Office has rejected BP’s trade mark application for the colour green as the predominant colour of a service station.

Since 1997, BP and Woolworths have been engaged in a long running battle over the colour green. BP have been attempting to trademark the colour green as the predominant colour of service stations. Woolworths has fervently fought this battle even though their predominant colours are red, green, and white for it’s service station, it didn’t want to loose it ability and choice of using the eco friendly colour of green in the future. Trademark registration gives the owner the exclusive rights to use the trademark as a trademark in relation to the goods or services for which it is registered. Anyone else who uses the trademark on similar goods or services could be liable for trademark infringement. To this day, BP haven’t bee able to win it’s case and the battle is still pending.

What has come into practice in result of this case.

This Case is a case of trademark law.

You are still register colour as a trademark for it’s relevant section and subsection, even though BP still hasn’t been successful.

Be careful when amending trade mark applications to ensure that the amendment does not change the identity of the trademark.

The colour which you want to register must have been used beforethe application date.

You must show use of the actual trade mark for which you are applying. Therefore you must be careful to match the description of the trade mark in the application with the colour actually used. If you don’t have this you will not be able to receive the trademark status.

For a successful registration, you may apply for a combination of colours, rather than a single colour trademark.
