I bought this for my dad because when I was a kid these were two of his favorite “”family”” movies and tried in vain to convince my mom to let him name one of his daughters Clarice TWICE after “the little reindeer girl in Rudolph” because he thought that was more acceptable than saying he wanted to name a baby after his favorite horror movie girl boss

And then the youngest came out as trans and we quietly stopped watching Silence of the Lambs as a family Every Single Time It Was On Tv

Im 26 now and maintain that in a world where it is very common for many horror story concepts pre 2000 to fall apart if implemented in a setting where characters have access to internet and smart phones…

…the Hannibal trilogy weirdly feels like it would almost make *more* sense in an updated setting? Or at least be less conveluted, which depending on audience preferences could either elevate or ruin some of the fun, but SO MUCH of the series deals with characters maintaining very niche identities or relationships with niche communities, having secret contact with other people, memorizing phone numbers.

Dolarhyde’s whole thing is 1000x easier for him to pull off and harder to solve in a world with social media.

Buffalo Bill is literally Socks the shitty trans Buy-Nothing communist roommate with a horrible rep in the most niche of local Baltimore facebook queer groups. If you haven’t read the book in a minute this is literally integral to how he is caught. Hannibal had a queer therapy patient with a roommate so shitty he and Clarice correctly assume he HAD to have been buffalo bill. This is how he is fucking caught and the archetype has only become MORE relevant in a post-social media world

One of the running throughlines of Hannibal is about how pissed the FBI are that so many people are catching glimpses or randomly know shit about Hannibal when they have no idea what his crazy ass is up to. That shit screams viral internet video. True crime podcast theorists. Barney Matthews was selling Hannibal memorabilia pre-Ebay to pay his rent as an unemployed nurse with student loan debt are you fucking kidding me

Been really into Riverdale the past year and a half and I gotta say the Silence of the Lambs element is fascinating.

Like there is enough blatant freud shit in the books that “what if hannibal lecter literally just was Clarice’s father like they are literally just the same guy” is a valid like new-angle

Ive owned this account for 10 years now and im STILL mad that Hannibal (movie) is only the A plot of that book when the B plot is 1000000x better and almost arguably the pinnacle of the whole series

Meanwhile SOTL (movie) is like. One of the most surgeon-precise adaptations of a book Ive ever seen let alone heard of. Transphobic movie with harmful societal consequences, but god damn if they didn’t meticulously pick only the best shit from that book, keeping it coherent and tight, and scrapping everything else.

Like. Thats crazy.

Why is MGM so protective of *Barney Matthews* will they lose the rights to SOTL if they licensed out the one character introduced in SOTL who doesn’t do anything until the NEXT book?

Cause you can’t DO the B plot of Hannibal WITHOUT Barney.

No actually its still wild in the third book Hannibal makes kind of a big deal about how Clarice wants to exploit their relationship to jail him to get a W for her flopping career

But he like BEGS Margot to let him take the fall for her and her girlfriend if it means Mason will die and she’ll be free and happy
