A sound designer in my group did a presentation in Poland for Digital Dragons on God of War 4. Long but interesting for anyone interested in video game sound design. At 4:25 there are clips of what my team does to make different sounds for the game. Super fun and cool!

Note: Drake’s Greatest Treasure is not the name of an Uncharted game, but only the title of this blog entry. Also, SPOILERS AHEAD!
The Uncharted Series: Drake’s Greatest Treasure
Now that I have completed the Uncharted series, Nathan’s family progression really stuck out to me. When we are first introduced to Nathan we don’t know anything about his family, and as far as we know, he doesn’t have any. But during the series we meet his friend and father-figure Sully in Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception, his blood brother Sam in Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End, his future wife Elena in Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune and their daughter Cassie in Uncharted 4. We also learn what happened to Nathan’s parents.
It isn’t until later in the series we discover that Nathan’s mother committed suicide and his father abandoned him at a Catholic orphanage. We eventually meet Nathan’s older brother, Sam. Nathan runs away from the orphanage to meet Sam. They break into a house their mother used to live in and find her journals. In her journals, they find her studies of Sir Francis Drake and how she speculates he has heirs. The orphan brothers decide to adopt Drake as their last name and claim to others that they are descendants of Sir Francis Drake.
Nathan keeps his mother’s journal to continue her research and ventures to steal the ring of Sir Francis Drake from a museum. After stealing the ring, Victor “Sully” Sullivan saves Nathan, and at this point their friendship starts. Sully works with Nathan in every game of the series, and during their interactions we see that Sully is more than just a friend to Nathan, but a father figure.
We don’t see Nathan’s brother, Sam, as an adult until he enlists Nathan for his help. We learn that Sam was shot while they were breaking out of prison as young adults, and Nathan assumed that Sam was dead, when he was actually just imprisoned. Sam gets out of prison and reunites with Nathan. After this reunion, Nathan now has Sam and Sully as his family.
The other person that becomes a part of Nathan’s family is Elena. He meets Elena early in the series and they have a rocky relationship for years. Eventually they marry, separate, and then give their marriage a second try. It finally works out and then they have their daughter Cassie, who we meet at the end of the series.
Though “family” wasn’t the main theme for the Uncharted series, it was definitely present in the last game. In Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune we met Nathan who was just an orphan, and we watch him build a family for himself by the end of the Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End. Throughout the series we see Nathan hunting for treasure, but in the end, his family is his greatest treasure of all.

In Horizon Zero Dawn, we are submerged in a post apocalyptic world with primitive tribal societies that live along side robotic animals. We learn that scientists developed military robots that cloned themselves and used biomass as fuel. Eventually these machines caused the Earth to be inhabitable for humans. A lead scientist created a robot she named “GAIA”, who was programmed to deactivate the military robots and create new ones that would re-seed the Earth and use stored DNA to recreate human life.
Though we are not as technologically advanced as the creator of GAIA, we are striving toward similar goals. According to New York Post, “US Military will have more combat robots than human soldiers by 2025.” The impact may not mean human extinction, but what does it mean? One concern is that there will be a decrease in jobs. The head of the Advanced Research Foundation said “I see a greater robotization, in fact, future warfare will involve operators and machines, not soldiers shooting at each other on the battlefield.” (New York Post) This statement does not say less jobs, but safer jobs.
If the overall goal is to prevent hands-on work environments for humans, our job demands will shift. The robots will do different tasks but most jobs for us will be similar in that we become robot operators. How would this affect our education requirements? We can assume that some robots will only require onsite training to operate for the less educated individuals to still be able to obtain jobs, while others will require higher education. This is how jobs are achieved currently so the expectation would be similar.
One thing that will change is human skill sets. If our cars drive for us, there will be less need to know how to manually drive a car; therefore, driving becomes a skill that fades away. If we have robots that fight wars for us, there will be less need to physically train during boot camp, but more technical training; therefore, athletic skills weaken. This is the progression of humanity. It’s been like this since hunter and gather days; we no longer have to hunt for our food so our hunting skills are inferior to our ancestors.
The irony about the story in Horizon Zero Dawn is that humanity starts over because of technology, instead of advancing. The tribes went back to being hunter and gathers, and even though they coexist with machines, they do not understand them. The robots and machines became more powerful than humans which lead to their demise. Even though this story is fiction, it poses the question of what sort of changes, good or bad, will humanity experience with the advancement of technology?
