Virendra Mhaiskar, the 40-year-old chairman and MD of IRB Infrastructure Developers, has clocked the miles — his company has built 4,000 km of roads in six states; it has orders for another 3,000 km; and by the end of this decade, it hopes to own road projects worth $7 billion, or 10% of all that NHAI auctions. He also has the money to show for all the miles clocked — the firm earned revenues of 2,503 crore and a net profit of Rs 452 crore in FY11 and is growing at 40%; it has orders worth Rs 11,000 crore; and Mhaiskar, who started his career as a construction contractor with a meagre capital of a few lakh rupees two decades ago, is worth Rs 3,400 crore on the basis of his three-fourth shareholding in IRB Infrastructure. And yet, his critics have kept up their carping.
