June 13, 2023-waiting to board ferry - taken on May 23, 2023-5:37 an.
Back near the end of May, my niece and I went off island to pick up some plants from a nursery. No matter what we are doing, we always have a great time together.
Already, trying to get on and off the Island, due to the approaching busy season, has become very difficult, so the only boat we could get a reservation on was the 6:00 am ferry, which means you have to be in line waiting to board by 5:30 am. .
Neither of us had gotten enough sleep, so we were really tired starting off, but the dawn over Vineyard Haven harbor made the early morning rising all worthwhile.
April 28, 2023-Wood ducks
I had a female Wood duck show up in the first week in April which was very exciting since I had never seen a Wood duck in real life before, only in photos. She spent some time hanging around in my pond for a week or so, and then disappeared for a few more days. I thought she might be gone for good, but she freturned with a male Wood duck. A very striking bird.
In the above photo, they are actually in a large puddle here, but did spend time in the pond.
They seem to have moved on now to probably a better place to nest. They are such interesting ducks. They actually can roost in trees, and make their nests in tree cavities. When the young ducklings hatch, they have to leave the nest almost immediately by falling to the ground from the nest cavity, no matter how high it is. Amazing.
So glad I finally got to see these ducks. They have such a quiet demeanor unlike the Mallards who visit here who are quite raucous.

March 16, 2023- Great Blue Heron, next to my backyard pond - taken March 3, 2023
I just happened to be looking out my back door at the time that this bird flew in, and the angle at which it came in was basically straight towards my point of view. It looked like some large bird from the dinosaur age.
This is not the first time that I havehad a Great Blue Heron show up here this winter but it is the first time thatI have been able to grab a photo of one, since they arrive silently and disappear quickly if they see you. This is just a quick cell phone shot through two panes of glass.
Fortunately, the bird was unsuccessful in grabbing any of the fish in my pond because they are still in a somewhat dormant state at the bottom of the pond. There are a lot of other larger ponds on the Island, at which it will hopefully find more active food sources.
There seem to be a lot of sightings this year of over wintering Great Blue Herons. Perhaps because it has been a much milder winter than usual. I always love seeing these magnificent birds, so was really glad that I just happened to be looking out the door at that moment this bird flew im.

Nov 20, 2022 - - West Chop overlook - - the view at mid-day yesterday
The view here looks north over Vineyard sound. On the upper right, the view is towards Woods Hole, the port from which the ferries travel over to the Vineyard.
The view on the upper left is that of Naushon Island, the largest island in the Elizabeth Island chain. It is privately owned by the Forbes family, and only has about 30 permanent residents living there.
Nov 18, 2022 - the sky behind the barn late this afternoon, while I was feeding the horses and chickens.
Nov 6, 2022 - at the edge of the swamp - on yesterday's afternoon dog walk
Nov 4, 2022 - around the buoy, with West Chop on the left - taken Oct 26, 2022
Swinging into Vineyard Haven harbor, and almost home, after one of the most spectacular ferry trips I have been on in a very long time.
Nov 4, 2022 - approaching the Island on Oct 26, and just before the turn into the outer harbor, with East Chop just visible on the right there, the clouds in the eastern sky suddenly opened up, and created beautiful light on the water.
