Weird dirty little beach, but ocean is ocean.

We brought him back to the ocean at Spring Creek Park in Brooklyn (or maybe Queens?). He faltered at first, but eventually found his footing and scuttled off. What happens now is up to him, but it’s got to be better than death by trash on a city street.

We brought this luckiest of crabs home and tried to keep him as comfortable as possible. The cats were perplexed.

Lucky Crab started his journey in a mud puddle at the corner of George St. and Knickerbocker Ave. in Bushwick. He was alive and bubbling away in a filthy pool of rainwater. We couldn’t leave him like that.

The Greenpoint oil spill is one of the largest oil spills ever recorded in the United States. Located around Newtown Creek in the Greenpoint neighborhood of Brooklyn, New York City, between 17 and 30 million US gallons (64,000 and 114,000 m3) of oil and petroleum products have leaked into the soil from crude oil processing facilities over a period of several decades.

Even with the expansion of the wastewater treatment plant, when it rains, it reaches capacity, and raw sewage and street run-off, which includes everything from condoms to dead rats, pours into the creek from 23 different locations.
