hey, i didn’t want to derail someone else’s post but its making me deeply anxious not to say anything so I’m gonna make my own

if you are in a privileged group but also a minor? especially a mentally ill minor, and TRIPLE if there is even the most remote chance saying something could result in danger for you?

those ‘use your privilege’ post telling you to stand up to your family members (which i notice becoming increasingly frequent at this time of year) are not directed at you.

(also, significantly more hostile aside - anybody who comes on this post to clown and say that they are feel free to fuck off in literally every goddamn direction)

I know with kids like Greta Thunberg making the news, and post listing other Gen Z kids making changes, it can be easy to feel like those posts are calling you, kids, out specifically.

and don’t get me wrong, I am so, so proud of those kids. and if you can stand up to your family members, I’m proud of you, too.

But, and i mean this in gentlest way possible - this is not your job.

It isn’t. Some of you are taking it on, and thats very noble of you, but it isn’t and should not be your job. anybody who says things like “these kids are gonna save the world” makes me want to tear my hair out because kids should not be saving the world, kids should be being kids. You should be worried about taking the ACT and figuring out what kind of people/if you want to kiss, not fucking fascism.

the most stressful decision you should have to make at a family gathering is what sweater to wear, not putting your literal child self in the middle of a bigoted, hostile confrontation, and anybody - especially any adult - who tells you otherwise is not only an asshole but it is fucking irresponsible, and does not have your best interest at heart.

Fuck yes. If you have the chance to be a child, be a fucking child. The psychological development you are going thru now - as a teenager - is is a major factor in determining the psychological and emotional stability levels you will have later in life and if you WANT to be a warrior? YOU WILL NEED that stability to have the energy and effectiveness needed to fight the good fight. I swear to you. Your childhood is your foundation the rest of your life is built on. Adolescence is part of the foundation. It’s allowed to be good and safe. That is not a bad thing. That means you have a stronger footing to come from to do go good works when the time comes. And it will come. I promise.

I can't believe I thought the need to step over sidewalk cracks with my right leg only was normal. Teachers, listen up!!!

If you're a teacher right now, please be aware of the impact you have, even online. I know the attendance sheet is new every week for a lot of schools, so if a student gives you their preffered name I strongly urge you to write it down elsewhere! Zoom often puts people's given names up without the option to change them, so you need to take extra steps to make sure you don't deadname anyone. For a lot of trans and nonbinary students, school is a safe place where the correct name and pronouns are used, which is sometimes not the case at home. Now that it's online, however, it's gotten much easier to misgender people on accident. As a teacher, your main job is to create a safe environment where kids are able to learn and grow, and they can't do that if they're constantly being misgendered. Mistakes happen, but awareness is key in a time like this, so I'm begging you to please, please do your best. Just asking for names and pronouns isn't enough, you need to make sure you are able to remember them and use them.

Many of my teachers have decided to ask us for our pronouns now, which is lovely, but nb people are forced to either out themselves or be dysphoric the whole time, which is not so lovely. Also, what if I'm questioning my gender? What if I honestly have no idea what my pronouns are? What if my pronouns change? What then???

If all it takes for you to hate the trans community is 14 year old Stickz on the internet who uses bone/boneself and xe/xim pronouns you're just a transphobic asshole, you're not "siding with the good trans people" you're bullying people who are often neurodivergent, children, or both. Don't be a dick about it and respect peoples pronouns.
