Detail of the Woods
I looked at all the trees and didn’t know what to do. A box made out of leaves. What else was in the woods? A heart, closing. Nevertheless. Everyone needs a place. It shouldn’t be inside of someone else. I kept my mind on the moon. Cold Moon, Long Nights Moon. From the landscape: a sense of scale. From the dead: a sense of scale. I turned my back on a story. A sense of superiority. Everything casts a shadow. Your body told me in a dream it’s never been afraid of everything.

Between Books
Muggle - Muggle AU
They meet at university over a library dispute. Mainly, the library says it has a certain material that Regulus wants but Remus has it even though they are in completely different courses of study.
This happens. Repeatedly. On both sides. Remus decides to start leaving notes in the books as a passive way to be a dick and also poke fun at the situation where they both seem to be dong parallel work in different fields.
At this point, they haven’t interacted much if at all. Meanwhile, Remus has been carousing with Sirius, James, and Peter and having a grand old time even if he’s doing a lot of stuff out of his comfort zone.
This comes to a head when they are grouped together with poster presentations at a local mini conference on campus.

The Land of Metal Flowers
Where in I take Muggle as in Human but could also mean Wix
Remus Lupin has heard stories about humans and their strange magics. As someone who spends the majority of his time as a human, with one of his parents having been human in general, he has considered going out to see humans for himself
Humans are dangerous, everyone says so, and in this verse it is the human aspect of Remus’ physiology that is looked askance. Even so deep in the woods, or the wolf of faerie, there are stories of the destruction a human (or human wix) can cause. Humans destroy just to do so–wolves, well, if they aren’t alone always have reasons even if they can’t be reasoned with.
Remus has, in fact, slipped out to spy on humans, unbeknownst to virtually everyone he knows currently. Once, he went into a small grocery which ended up a fair amount of self defeating talk because money?? He couldn’t have known.
He made friends with some kids at a footie field that bordered the woods. He deflected talk about school, didn’t understand when they disappeared come fall.
One night, something happens in the glen where he’s lived all his life. The destruction is unfathomable and not provoked. He ran past the football field and down the street and knocked on a door that does not exist.
This is a story about a boy who hates himself and how that impacts just about every aspect off his life. Thats not to say :
REMUS LUPIN: WET BLANKET
But instead to point out a general underpinning of his character.
For Remus there is an aspect of risk in most everything—but its not the risk of death that motivates, but the inherent sense of risk of people. What will people think of him if he’s honest, if they know? They will leave, obviously. They will leave. And they should.
This means that for all his gifts—the ability to be snarky and sharp, his intelligence, and even his slightly unassuming manner all pale in comparison to his vulnerability to peer pressure. This means, sure, he might have stood up to his friends if their bullying got out of hand…but if the risk outweighed the reward it would never have happened. Sure Remus could think of a way to manage that prank…but did he want to risk his very hard won place at Hogwarts? (The answer might have been no… but with the right smile and ribbing the answer would be yes, of course, where?
This should not be mistaken with being the “more responsible” marauder. It has always been about presentation and skin and an innate desire to be wanted even as he fully believes he can never be, not wholly.
The Prank
was the biggest wake up call Remus could have received. It changed the tenor of not only his relationships with Sirius but all of his friends. For the first time the consequences of “going along with things” was placed in stark contrast with could really get someone killed. In addition to that, did any of his friends—his glorious, brilliant, friends who had taught themselves magic to be with him—HIM!— really understand his situation and the level of things they could get away with but he never could?
Upset would be downplaying it. Hurt is more like it. Withdrawal expected—although he likely couldn’t manage a full withdrawal, it was enough that Sirius could grow to suspect him (and he, Sirius) before Lily and James went into hiding. Perhaps if he were better at confrontation things would have changed—but he wasn’t in canon and he didn’t. This, at least, is something I would likely challenge in play. How does pressing Remus Lupin into making choices and speaking up change his trajectory?
send me an AU and i’ll tell you 5 of my headcanons for it
