“i’m just visiting my grandma, she invited me to come down for the summer as a vacation after i finished school.” she chattered, tucking her long locks behind her ear. “but really… i think it’s because she was lonely, you know? so i’ve just been hanging around cooking with her for the past week.”

“oh, okay.” jace actually smiled and felt himself relax a bit, she would be there the whole summer. she was stunning and he wanted nothing more than to show her he wasn’t always so shy and awkward. “i’m sure she’ll enjoy the company, she’s probably one of the nicest people i know. she deserves some good company.”

“nice to meet you too,” she beamed, flashing her brightest smile his way. if he was here to help his grandma, then of course he was a friend of hers as well. “so you live around here?“ she questioned, walking toward were jace was standing.

jace nearly tripped over himself as he walked towards the house, turning back only when he heard the girls voice. “yeah, i live a few streets over.” he nodded and stopped in his tracks. “what about you? just visiting?” he wanted nothing more than for the conversation to be going. Silently he was hoping the girl was staying for the summer like so many other tourists did in his town.

maye shook her head, tossing her book down on the lounger. “i’ll stay out of yours! feel free to do whatever it is that you normally do.” she grinned at the other, gesturing toward the deck. “have at it. i can help too, if you need anything.” she shrugged, shoving her hands into the pockets of her shorts. 

“yeah, thanks.” he looked back up to her and mustered up a small smile, making his way back into the center of the yard. “it’s nice to meet you by the way.” his words were rushed now, his confidence severely lacking. “yeah, i’ll definitely let you know, i’ll probably just change the lights out here and see what i need to help fix up the deck back here.” he looked behind him to where all of the work needed to get done.

“wait— don’t go, was she expecting you?” she asked, tilting her head in question. it was strange that he grandma hadn’t mentioned that someone would be coming over, but it must have just slipped her mind. she considered giving her a ring to ensure that jace wasn’t a stranger trying to trick her, but his puppy-like face made her confident in the fact that he was indeed a friend of her granny’s and not a threat. “what were you here to do?”

jace nearly fell over because of the abrupt stop in his tracks and his eyes glanced back up to the brunette girl in front of him. “y-yeah.” he stuttered again, trying his hardest to compose himself as he took deep breaths. “she usually leaves the back door unlocked if she isn’t going to be home.” he spoke quietly, his eyes now fixed on the floor, unable to look at her and speak properly. she was slowly but surely turning him into a complete idiot and she hadn’t even spoken ten sentences to him. “she asked me to come around and do a few repairs, and measure for the deck.” jace’s hand was rubbing the back of his neck nervously and he forced himself to look back up at the girl, giving her a smile. “i promise i’ll keep out of your way.”

maye was deep into her book when a voice called out from her gate, startling her from her reading. she fumbled with her book, effectively losing her page as she sputtered “oh god.” she couldn’t imagine who would have the nerve to enter someone else’s yard unannounced, and she shot up out of her chair to find the culprit. her racing heart stuttered when she was met with a pair of warm brown eyes. “who are you?” she inquired incredulously, not so much angry as curious and shocked. a stranger was standing before her in her grandmothers yard, and she didn’t know whether or not she would need a bat for this confrontation, or just simple words. “come back later? why are you in my granny’s yard right now?” she questioned, her hands finding their way to her hips.

jace was frozen, he couldn’t stop himself from staring at the brunette girl who stood from the lounge. he couldn’t hear anything that was coming out of her mouth, he was too busy taking in every small detail of her face. the dark haired boy was breathless and she was clearly incredibly angry at him. he shook his head and his brow furrowed, “i...i’m jace.” he spoke slowly, he had nearly forgotten his own name in her presence. the beautiful girl in front of him was making him so nervous he had to try a lot harder to put together a coherent sentence. “your granny?” he tilted his head to the side, he had never seen the girl before and it was a small town where everyone knew everyone and he didn’t know her; it was slightly disconcerting. “mrs. rosas is your grandma? i’m sorry, i-uh-i didn’t know she was having people over.” he took a step back. “i help around the house for her... you know...fixing things.” jace was tripping over almost every word that left his mouth. “i can uh....come back later.” he couldn’t bring himself to tear his eyes away from her soft brown ones. “yeah, i should do that...”

maye sighed softly to herself, relaxing back into the lounge chair. her body felt loose and warm in the sun—she’d swam for the better part of the morning, and she was just awake enough to read a few pages of her current book. grandma dianna left a bit ago claiming that she had errands to run and insisted that she remain at the house and enjoy her day. it’d only been a few since she’d arrived, and she could already see this summer being good for her, a way to relax and kick back after another long, stressful year. 

jace had spent the better part of the morning covered in flour, helping his mom out at the bakery before he had to be over at the rosas’ house. a nice older woman owned the house, she and her husband had come into town and been so kind to jace and his mom that when her husband passed away jace helped her around the house.  the boy had promised he would head over there to do some small repairs and take measurements for the deck she had been asking for. the dark haired boy knew she always left the back gate open for him, so he moved quickly into the back carrying his tool box thinking of everything that needed to be done. she was very specific and he was meticulous when he worked, every small detail had to be perfect in order for him to move on to the next thing.

when jace moved into the backyard he could have sworn that he saw someone in the lounge chair, he stopped in his tracks. “mrs. rosas?"he called out afraid to disturb her, but he hadn’t seen her car out front. he had even called her earlier in the morning and she had mentioned she would be in town today. “is that you?” he waited patiently, almost afraid of who was going to pop up from the chair. “i can come back later if you want me too...”
