It's hard to believe I embarked on creating a dark, gritty, superhero story based on the direction the new Arrow series on WB had been taking the past two years. Oh, you wannted me to read your fanfic… Well, right now I don’t have a lot of time to continue reading stuff. If there is something you wanna know about storytelling though, I’m all ears (and I got pretty gigantic ones)
Ah, no worries. Just thought you’d have the base idea so I can expand it to you. I find my greatest challenge is the ‘show don’t tell’ rule in writing. What are your views on that?
Show don’t tell is a good mechanic in story telling, its more impactful to see that a character fell down and hit itself in the knee than the person telling you that it hurt its knee the other day. The anecdote is less interesting than the action of it in most of the situations.
This also works for character personality, instead of having someone tell someone else that X character is a very nervous person, you can have the character struggling to stand up in front of a crowd. It explains the personality and if it is relevant to the story it becomes a key point in the story advancing the story.
Although, I've been told that explaining an emotion pretty much equates to telling. That being said, I still see people doing it. For example 'he cried angrily' or 'she ran hastily' - the words angrily and hastily equates to telling do they not? But it does get the message across.
