thinking about how nuclear bombs, apart from their obvious potential to cause massive amounts of destruction when used, also kind of serve a rhetorical purpose by virtue of their sheer existence. they've become a cultural symbol of total destruction; the biggest, most final, most horrifying and inexcusable display of force in military history; the weapons of ultimate domination to be deployed only as a last resort. but maybe as a result of this perspective in people minds, it causes them to overlook the fact that conventional bombs can still do the same amount of damage if you drop enough of them. The destruction of Hiroshima and Nagasaki by nuclear bombing was tragic and unnecessary, but also, a leveled city is a leveled city regardless of whether you do it with one big bomb, or 200 smaller bombs. The firebombings of Tokyo and Dresden were no less horrifying or tragic just because they took longer to carry out - but hey, at least they weren't nuked, i guess? It's led to this strange standard among americans where it seems like any amount of conventional bombing is acceptable as long as no one whips out the Big Bad Nuclear Explosive. idk, politics of aesthetics i guess. the actual destruction doesn't matter, only how it makes you feel.
