She gave him a long considering look. He was strong, likeable enough, and clearly motivated.

“Very well, I’ll keep that in mind Jae. I look forward to seeing what you can do at the tribute centre,” she smirked at him, “But for now, I will wish you goodnight. After all, you’ll need the rest since you’re going to be taking us all by storm, right?”

She stood up straight, stepped back and closed the door, once more replacing the chair firmly under the handle.

That was all Jae needed - to know that V hadn’t completely abandoned the thought of him. He headed back to his room with a smile playing at his lips, feeling more positive about his time spent on the train.

Valkyrie raised an eyebrow.

“The flattery is a lot, don’t you think?” she smirked, “You said you didn’t know how to fix them? I am far more interested in how you’re planning to fix them now, than hearing how incredible measured I am.”

She waited, interested in seeing what the boy had to say for himself.

“I didn’t, but now I think my best bet is to prove how useful I can be.” He hesitated, not completely liking how that sounded.

“I know you’re not interested in sob stories, so I won’t give you one. Just know that I have a little brother that I would do anything to get back to. There isn’t a move, plan or strategy I won’t consider.” That serious look was back, fire burning in his eyes. 

“What I’m trying to say is, don’t discount me yet, V. I’m not the person I was the first night we met.”

She raised an eyebrow in surprise, “Strategy? I’m not sure a lot of the tributes on this train are thinking the most… strategically. It’s good to see I’m not completely alone.”

“So what do you have to say about strategies, and what makes you think coming to my door is a good one?”

The demeanor in the boy had clearly changed since their last conversation, and she was pleased to see he’d taken her words for what they were. She’d heard a few stories about the source of the bruise whilst listening in on various tributes’ conversations, but wasn’t confident in any of the possible explanations.

She would hear him out. Not like there was anything else for her to do at this point.

Jae guessed by the way Valkyrie had made no attempts to step aside that he was to explain himself out here, in the hallway. That was okay. He supposed he hadn’t exactly given her much reason to want to hear him out, so this was further than he’d expected to get anyway.

“I had planned to come in here and think with my heart, to aim for the hearts of the others. I had planned to have options. But I got nervous. I messed up, made some stupid mistakes. I didn’t know how to fix them.” Jae furrowed his brow. “And I realised the biggest mistake I had made was getting off on the wrong foot with you. Out of everyone I have yet to meet, you think the most with your head. You’re smart, calculated, level-headed. The worst thing I could have done was give you the wrong impression of me.”

cosima-silamide‌:

Cosima stood up, putting her hands to her hips. “It felt to me like you needed help when you showed up in our room with a broken nose.” She was raising her voice at him. She didn’t mean to, but this conversation was incredibly frustrating to her when she hadn’t meant any harm.

“I’m not trying to underestimate you,” she said, exasperated. “I saw Tai in the hallway and it was convenient. If you want we won’t try to help again, but that’s not the way I’d like to go.”

“Save me the trouble of feeling indebted to you,” Jae said simply. “I don’t want your help.” He headed into his room and closed the door behind him.

Valkyrie looked up at the sound of knocking at her door. The knocks meant that it probably wasn’t the idiot pair, and it was late enough that she was surprised that anyone would have come. Especially to her door.

She tucked the paper and pencil under her pillow and moved towards the front door, pulling the chair out from the handle and opening it to find a very surprising tribute waiting.

She crossed her arms, “Good evening Jae, what brings you to my door?”

“I’m here because I can’t think of anyone better to discuss the only thing that matters aboard this train,” he said, his face dead serious. “Strategy.”

The day’s events had given Jae a lot to think about. Besides interactions with Cosima he’d sooner forget, he’d spent most of the train’s malfunction alone in his room. He was shit scared, if he was being honest with himself. For the first time since he’d stepped on the train, he felt like he needed a plan. He couldn’t go along hoping and praying that he’ll have what it takes to survive once he gets in the arena, he needed strategy. He needed help.

It was for this reason that his legs took him, almost as if a puppet on strings, to the District Two chambers. He was looking for V. Despite the wrong foot they’d gotten off on, a lot of what she had said to him had made sense. After he’d had some time to think about it, he understood that she’d meant no malice. She was simply stating facts. Of all the people Jae had met, V was probably the most level-headed. That was exactly what he needed to get back to his brother. 

He was thankful for the lights back on to guide his way, and headed to her room with purpose in his step. He knocked on her door: three heavy, sure raps.

“Do you uhm - want a donut?” Tai said as he scratched his head awkwardly, offering the food out.  

Cosima turned to Tai, shaking her head in disbelief. She then turned back to Jae. “I’m trying to help both of us. We’re both in here.” 

At this point Jae wasn’t even acknowledging Tai’s presence in the room.

“I don’t need your help, Cosima!”

“Fuck,” he hissed, running his fingers through his hair, gripping its ends. “You know, I get why the others might underestimate me. I know I haven’t given them many reasons to think otherwise, but you?” 

He didn’t even know what to say, how to express what he was feeling. He let out an exasperated breath. He had hoped he might be able to count on Cosima to at least have faith in him.

This was the first time Daphne had been alone since the Reaping. She stared blankly at the Oak dresser trying to gather her thoughts. She had brooded over the subject a thousand times. She had become a piece of the game she had fought so hard to end. Now she had to be the deadliest piece on the board. She headed up to the bar and sighed. It was going to be a long night.

As Daphne chuckled her head tilted to the side as the thought about how he may have acquired the bruising. Perhaps she had mistaken his kind nature and he had gotten into a fight, or maybe he took rebellion against the Peacekeepers at the Reaping. She shook the thoughts from her head, after all it was just a curiosity of hers. “You’re right. We all need a little mystery,” She laughed. It appeared that Jae had interested Daphne, something which others found hard to do.

Jae agreed wholeheartedly. If there was anything he could benefit from, it was a little bit of mystery. The less she knew about him the better. Jae turned now so that his back was against the bar, leaning back on his elbows.

“So, Daphne from District 11, tell me about yourself.”

Tai took a step back, looking to Cosima. Waiting for her to answer as he noted the awkward tension.

She was taken aback from the tone of his voice, not sure where it was coming from. “It’s embarrassing for both of us,” she said as if she were pointing out the obvious. “What happens when we get to the Capitol and they ask what happened? The door story wouldn’t be a good look for District Eight.”

“I’m really fucking sorry that this isn’t a good look for you, Cosima,” he spat, turning away and throwing the wet cloth he’d been holding through the bathroom door. Jae’s nose was broken, he couldn’t understand why Cosima believed she’d come out of this the victim.

Tai gestured to his face “Y’know, the thing, with your face” he smiled sheepishly. 

He presented the ice bucket. “and we are uh- here to fix it!” I could have said that better, yup.

Cosima nodded in agreement. “Tai agreed to say that he hit you. That way we can keep this,” she said, motioning to Jae’s face, “being the door’s fault a secret. It will be less embarrassing that way.”

Jae looked up at them both, dumbfounded almost. Embarrassing? He knew that this wasn’t an ideal situation, that it didn’t make him look good, but Cosima? How did this affect her at all?

“I don’t-” He shook his head, closing his eyes. “I’m sorry, I don’t understand. How is this embarrassing for you?” The emphasis he’d put on the last word was harsher than he’d meant, but truly he didn’t understand Cosima’s reaction.

“Look who I found,” she sang, Tai trailing behind as she entered the District Eight quarters. Jae was, thankfully, still in the room. She crossed the room to sit next to him with the now watered-down ice. “I’ve also found a solution to our problem.”

In Cosima’s absence Jae had taken it upon himself to wash the majority of the dry blood away, as much as he could around the pain. He was headed back into the room as Cosima and Tai joined him, and greeted them with a smile.

“Hey,” he said, his face morphing into a confused frown. “What problem?”

Fenn laughed as sat to face his companion as he considered his response, pretending to be deep in thought. “You make some salient points. But I still think a reverse centaur would look weirder, somehow.”

“That’s a tricky one for someone who is basically already a mermaid,” Fenn chuckled and pushed his hair back out of his face. “Now don’t get me wrong,” Fenn started, “I love some peace and quiet, but I think that underwater might have a bit too little going on for someone like me. A tree colony, on the other hand, sounds pretty fun. The ideal would be a tree colony near the sea - I don’t need to go to swim in the sea but I could sneak off - swinging on vines and shit - to a private spot where I get to look out at it.”

Fenn shook his head out of it. “I think I honestly transcended to another plane of existence thinking about that one. Okay, your turn. Would you rather…” he thought carefully, “Would you rather be able to read the thoughts of other people or speak to animals? And I want examples of the people or animals you would go use your powers on first.”

“Okay, definitely the animals thing. I don’t think I could stand to know the thoughts of others,” he said truthfully, laughing a little. “Also, an example of animals? No. All animals. I’m not fussy.” 

“Would you rather be always under-dressed or always over-dressed?”

It truly was a miracle that neither of their arses had ended up in anyone’s face, but pretty much every other part of their bodies had been. Fenn was trying not to laugh - it truly was a precarious position and any movement might make them topple - but his body was shaking with the effort of holding it in.

As Jae made his move, Fenn could see his arm give way and felt Jae’s weight crash onto him. He joined Jae’s laugh, breathless and winded as tears rolled down his face. 

Shakily he pressed up to all fours and tumbled back into a seated position next to Jae.

“I didn’t realise Twister could be such a dangerous game,” he laughed as he lay back on the floor. For a short while, all fear and strategy were forgotten.

Jae lay down beside Fenn, the grin still playing at his lips. This was the most fun he’d had since the Reaping, he almost didn’t want it to end.

“You know,” he said, feigning deep thought. “If the tributes picked suitable partners based on their old-school board game skills, I think I’d have a pretty good chance.”

Fenn rolled onto his side, head propped up on his hand, and looked at Jae, giggling. “I think you’re right. That was a masterful game of Twister, and I commend you for it.”

He looked around at the mess of games, and though he could not hear the other tributes moving around, thought they must be beginning to stir soon. He sighed in spite of his smile, wishing he could just spend the next few weeks in this cart and then go peacefully on his merry way.

But there was still a little time left.

“What do you wanna do? Wait I know,” he said excitedly. “Let’s play would you rather. I’ll go first.” He paused in thought.

“Okay. Would you rather the clothes you wore were always a little bit itchy or your socks were always a little bit wet?”

Jae laughed along with Fenn, looking up at him from where he lay on his back. The grin quickly dropped from his lips at Fenn’s next question, though, and he scrunched up his face in perhaps over-dramatic disgust.

“Oh god, what kind of a question is that?” he asked incredulously. “Okay, let me see..” Still lay on his back, he looked up at the ceiling and brought his fingers up to rub at his chin in thought. “I think the socks. At least that’s constant. You can’t have a constant itch so I’d be on edge, waiting for the itches. You know?” The way he spoke made it sound like what he was saying made total sense.

“Okay, my turn. Would you rather.. fight off five hundred tiny lions, or one giant scorpion? The scorpion being taller than you are.” He grinned wide, sitting up to face Fenn now.

“I pride myself on asking the hard-hitting stuff, Jae. I really do.” Fenn giggled and flopped backwards again. He played with his hair as Jae justified his answer. The man has a point, he thought. “You’re totally right,” Fenn agreed passionately. “The socks you could get used to.”

He looked up at Jae, pleased to see him smiling. Fenn puffed his cheeks out and breathed out heavily, feigning that he had been caught off-guard by such an insightful question. He furrowed his brow in consternation, though bubbles of laughter were escaping his pursed lips.

“Well,” he began seriously, “the thing with tiny lions is I reckon you stand more of a chance of befriending them than the giant scorpion. Scorpions are bastards, man,” he looked at Jae and couldn’t help but giggle. “I’d take the lions, stand on a tall chair so they couldn’t get me, and plead with them to be my friends.”

“Okay. Next question. Would you rather be a reverse mermaid or a reverse centaur?”

"A creative solution, I like it. But can you guarantee they won't pile on top of each other in their desperate angst to kill - or hug - you? You may need something taller than a chair."

Jae grinned, crossing his legs and placing his hands in his lap.

"That one's easy. A reverse centaur. Why would I want a fish head?"

"Would you rather live underwater - you can breathe, obviously - or as part of a tree colony? Reasons for your answer too, please."

“Ah, well, it probably scampered somewhere after I took my shirt off. Fast little creepy crawlies, am I right?” Rowan shook his head, a smile finding its way on his lips. 

Heaving a sigh, he began to put on his shirt again. Damn spider at least now knew not to mess him. 

He didn’t wait to speak until he was fully dressed, though, already expressing his gratitude even before his head could poke out of his collar. “Thanks for your help, man.”

“I’m Rowan, by the way.” He extended his hand to him, a smile still on Rowan’s face, now fully dressed. 

“Uh, yeah. No worries,” he said, still a little perplexed by the meeting. This whole thing had probably gone on for too long to be a hallucination though, so Jae took the man’s hand and shook it. 

“I’m Jae. It’s nice to meet you,” he said with a grin. “A whole… lot of you.”

Rowan couldn’t help but stare at Jae with his last statement. He chuckled, shaking his head, having been caught surprised and unexpectedly entertained by the quip. He didn’t expect much of that after leaving home, though to be fair, he didn’t have much of humor back home. His parents and sister were hilarious before the rebellion but recent events have changed that. “Yeah, that’s…true, I guess. There’s a whole lot of me here.”

“It’s nice to meet you, Jae. Where are you from? Not District Seven, right?” Of course not. He was the guy from District Seven, and they only took two people from each district, which meant the other person from his district was a girl. Unless… “Is it just you and me here or nah?”

Jae laughed a little, starting at a walk towards the dining room in the hopes that Rowan would follow. He was hungry, and it was about time he let the others see the bruises on his face, get it over with. Cosima would tell them whatever she wanted to anyway, so the time for hiding away was over.

"Well, it wouldn't be much of a game if it was just the two of us, would it?" He grinned. "I'm from District Eight. Come, let's go get lunch. You'll meet some of the others there, I'm sure."

“Is that how you ended up with all those bruises? By not being brave” she playfully bantered. He was cute, but looked as though he could definitely stand his ground. Daphne felt a kind nature around him, as though he really cared what she thought even if she was a little standoff-ish. Maybe it was time to make friends she thought to herself, just maybe.

Jae smiled down at the girl, leaning forward on his elbows. Jae had made a very stern pact with himself to never speak honestly of the marks on his face, ready for judgement for the other tributes. He certainly hadn’t been expecting this sort of reaction to them.

“Those are a story for another time,” he said, leaving the rest up to Daphne’s imagination. Of course, she could already know how he’d gotten the bruises, and so he was fooling himself, but to act cool about them felt a better option.

“There has to be some mystery to me, doesn’t there?”
