Episode 4 thoughts:
So i think i've reached my limit with this season. I don't think this episode was necessarily worse than ep3 and certainly not worse than ep2 but i think when the same issues continue and only get more prominent i'm getting increasingly irritated. There were some things i liked but overall the episode just left me feeling tired and annoyed. Even Louis on my screen isn't enough offset it
Most of the tour stuff is boring to me. Like i kind of don't care about any of this and it can't carry a story. At this point i feel certain that focusing so much of the season on it was a mistake
Louis and Regina were sad, touching and terrifying. Jacob and Delainey were phenomenal here. Their scenes were the only part of the episode i was fully invested in
Although it was fun to get more Armand i feel mixed about many of his scenes. For starters all the humiliating remarks made about him that often feel like they have racist undertones and not sure what the writers are trying to do with it. Daniel's Louisiana fried chicken comment was also crazy, like what was the point? What's the point of any racist comments from characters like Daniel, Lestat and Christine when the story isn't engaging with it in any meaningful way? This season feels oddly spiteful in the way the first two seasons rarely were
I'm a devil's minion enjoyer but didn't really like Armand and Daniel's scenes that much. I think a part of it is Bogosian's acting and i know i'm not the only one who's felt he's been kind of weak this season. It's weird because i didn't really have a problem with him in s1-2. Between him, Jennifer Ehle (who's usually great) and some of the supporting actors (when in the past even very minor characters have been well-acted) i'm almost wondering if there's some issues with directing this season
But i think it's mostly the writing. It's this season's main problem. It's why individual good scenes, performances and themes aren't enough to make it feel good television that just has flaws. The narrative sctructure of this season is broken and not in an entertaining way. It's just too weak to sustain the story
