"Boo!"
"haha did I scare you?"
"I donât get scared. Maybe surprised followed by a girl scream, but thatâs about it."
âOh really? Wow, color me impressed then.. Pfft...âŚâ
Once again, Jean tensed up at the faint brush of their hands, instinctively moving it to rub the back of his neck, he quietly nodded in response to his apology, mouthing an âitâs fine.â Before dropping his hand back down. His gaze darted from the city lights and street lamps to nothing higher than Charlesâ feet in terms of looking at the other. Jean attentively listened to the elderâs once upon a time, intrigued and slightly daunted by Charlesâ past experiences.
"Wow⌠ThatâsâŚreally impressive actually."
LA? Europe? Jeanâs barely moved past from Queens.
An engineer? He could barely figure out basic algebra.
Company???? The kid would just barely get hired for any sort of music gig.
All he really could do was make good coffee and breathe. (And even that skillset sometimes faltered in consistency.)
Jean slightly perked up from the gentle push, glancing over to Charles with his voice getting caught in his throat. He looked thoughtful for a moment, squeezing out a breathy chuckle. The brunette looked straight ahead, watching pale condensation mist out of his mouth as his breath met the cold air. He pressed his lips together, sighing slightly as he shrugged.
"WellâŚitâs not really that interesting I guess, I have a mom and a dad and a brother, his nameâs Cole." Jean paused briefly at the name before continuing.
"We went to school together for the most part, heâs three years older than me. By the time he got to college he went decided to join the navy. I kinda decided to stay behind, and take a music major." Jean lowered his eyes as he continued.
"I uhâŚ.overheard about this show from a coffee shop and decided to apply and here I amâŚI guess." He ended with a modest chuckle, the ends of his eyes crinkling as he smiled.
"I told you, nothinâ too special about lilâ olâ me."
Charles held Jeanâs gaze for a moment, listening with genuine interest as he spoke. Jean wasnât much younger than he was, but he could tell there was something about him that made him a little more experienced. Charles could play guitar and sing, but to take it seriously, as this one did, it wasnât just cup of tea.Â
When Jean smiled, Charles melted. He didnât understand how or why, but all he knew was that he had a good feeling about this one.Â
"Nothinâ special? Being a music major is pretty fuckinâ cool if you ask me. Granted, Iâd probably never give up my power to pursue a career in music, but thatâs you." Walking alongside him, Charles playfully bumped into him, careful not to knock the younger over with his much larger build.
"How does getting a pre-dinner coffee sound?" His voice softened as he tucked his hands into his own pockets, giving a warm smile to Jean to ease the tension.
Jean's hands went to rub at his cheeks, both at an attempt to protect himself from the weather and to hide the heat that rushed to his face. The brunette hadn't heard that sort of validation for a long time. And for the first time in a while, Jean felt at ease with himself. There was still that shy smile on his face, as he whispered a 'thank you'. And albeit Jean wasn't so large himself, he chuckled as he stumbled when Charles had pushed him, returning the gesture playfully with a coy glint in his eye. Jean felt his terseness melt away with the next moments, looking at Charles's eyes with newfound ease. "That sounds great." Jean tilted his head to the side and tucked back a stray lock of hair behind his ear. This time his voice was softer, more contemplative as he repeated the affirmation with a subtle bashfulness "Yeah, sounds great."
It was quite unfortunate that Jean was so self-conscious, a trait that he often found deplorable at most times if not all. It had been ages since the last time he had actually gone out with a person aside from work. Most likely it was due to the underlying...

It was quite unfortunate that Jean was so self-conscious, a trait that he often found deplorable at most times if not all. It had been ages since the last time he had actually gone out with a person aside from work. Most likely it was due to the underlying sensation of wanting to heave at the thought of interacting with social beings more than the bare minimum. But this was a nice change though, despite the cityâs orchestra of busy voices and blaring traffic, the scenic view of glowing lights and the nice view of the man beside him sorta made up for most of the discomfort. The question almost went unnoticed, but considering that the brunette had avoided eye contact at any and all cost, Jean was almost proud of himself that he was able to articulate forth an answer while actually looking at him. âOh uh.. Born and raised in New York I guess.â He shrugged, laughing quietly to himself. He stared at Charles for a bit longer before turning away. âNothing really special. How âbout you?â
Noting the lingering glance he received from the younger, he smiled to himself as the other turned away, resisting the tight pull of his stomach in response to Jean. Whatever this kid was doing, it was making Charlesâ stomach churn in the nicest way. There were plenty of people he found attractive in the house alone, but there was something intriguing about this one. Moving over on the sidewalk to let a pedestrian walk by, he âaccidentallyâ bumped hands with Jeanâs, mumbling an apology before continuing with his own story.
"I was born in LA, but raised in Eastern parts of Europe with my grandparents. They liked to travel a lot, so I never really had a permanent place to call my own, you know? There were downsides to moving, but there was always new beginnings and I didnât really have to go to school until I was sixteen." Drawing off, he smiled subtly and looked at Jean.
"Grandparents raised me and I moved back to LA after I turned 18, moving on to going to college and later becoming an engineer in advanced weaponry. Best friend and I started up our own company in LA and then I heard about the show on one of my meeting trips. Decided to move to NYC and I guess thatâs the story of how I got here. Sorry, I tend to go off on tangents, but figured might as well throw that in there, too." He smiled at the shorter before nudging him affectionately. "What about you?"
Once again, Jean tensed up at the faint brush of their hands, instinctively moving it to rub the back of his neck, he quietly nodded in response to his apology, mouthing an "it's fine." Before dropping his hand back down. His gaze darted from the city lights and street lamps to nothing higher than Charles' feet in terms of looking at the other. Jean attentively listened to the elder's once upon a time, intrigued and slightly daunted by Charles' past experiences.

"I made extra coffee in case anyone's interested."
His fingers twitched as he was led down the halls, his expression nothing really short of bashful and surprised. His shoulders stiffened and he avoided much eye contact from Charles during the entire exchange. It was embarrassing, being taken care of like this, as if he were a child all over again. But at the same sentiment, Jean hadnât necessarily hated this. He stood upright and kept his eyes to the ground, trying his best not to enjoy the sensation of warm gusts blowing against his face and fingers through his hair. A few cautious squints and blinks were present as the gel was combed through his hair, finally gathering the strength to glance upwards once the elder stated that he was finished. There was a hint of color dusting his cheeks and the tips of his ears (though he concluded it had to be due to the heat of the blow-drier) as an arm was offered to him. He was slow to grab it, his fingers reluctantly latching onto his forearm. Jean looked toward Charles, a timid smile on his face. âYeah, thank you.â
Grinning in response, he led them back downstairs before tipping an invisible hat to Dean, opening the door for Jean and closing it behind them; winking towards the other as he did so. The night was slowly shifting in on the city, cars honking in response to the others that sounded behind them, lights igniting down the block while the nightlife followed suit. It truly was a beautiful night; certainly one not found in LA. He thought about LA every now and then, thinking about the friendships he abandoned and the company he ran left in the hands of his co-worker and best friend. Resuming his concentration on Jean, he admired the other as they walked, the kid could clean up pretty well.
"So where are you from?" He decided to break the silence, looking at him with a look that laid between genuine interest and a seductive glance.Â

Jean unintentionally shrunk away as he felt the elder toy with his still damp locks, more so out of habit rather than dislike of the other. The brunette paused briefly as he felt a bead of his earlier shower roll down the slopes on his face. His hand went over to skim through the wet tresses, making a small âoh.â sound as he realized just how disheveled he mustâve been. He saw a thin film of water covering his hand as he pulled it away, sighing quietly, his lips screwed in a thin line. âSorry, Iâm making you wait so long.â
Smiling gently at the younger, he taps his shoulder playfully before taking his hand to his shared bedroom. The boys were almost never in their rooms, which gave Charles some piece of mind. Letting go of his hand, he trotted over to his closet and took out his blow-drier, holding it up to Jean and grinning delicately.Â
"I always carry this thing with me wherever I go. Canât stand my hair being wet for that long." He quipped before looking at his watch. "Yeah, we got time."Â
Pulling Jean towards the bathroom, he instantly plugged it into the wall and began drying Jeanâs hair without a second thought; pulling gently at the clumps and smoothing it out with his fingers, every so often stealing a glance at the shorter one.
Minutes passed and Charles smiled to himself as he turned off the drier, grabbing moulding wax as he played with Jeanâs hair between his fingertips, twisting and curling parts while slicking parts down.
"There. Youâre presentable." Charles smirked lovingly at Jean, washing his hands quickly before holding out his own arm. "Shall we go?"
