George Harrison - “My Sweet Lord” (1970)

Fifty-four years ago today, on November 23rd, 1970, “My Sweet Lord,” the lead single from All Things Must Pass, the first solo (triple) album by George Harrison, was released in the US. Harrison’s first single as a solo artist, the song topped the charts in at least 15 countries, including the US and the UK, where it was the biggest selling single of 1971. However, as successful, lovely, and revered as the song is, those may not be the most significant aspects of its history. In 1971, a lawsuit was brought against Harrison for copyright infringement of the Chiffons’ “He’s So Fine” by Bright Tunes Music. The case, which astonishingly would not be completely concluded until 1998, is one of the most infamous in US legal history, and its judgement had lasting consequences throughout the industry that extend to this day. Despite its legal issues, however, with its utterly distinctive slide guitar work and deeply-felt spiritual message, the song remains unique and beloved as one of the great tracks of the 70s and beyond.
