Вашари у Србији - Fairs in Serbiа
Вашар у Неготину - A fair in Negotin (Serbia) 1958
Since the Middle Ages, вашар (pl. вашари; English fair) has been the most important and most massive social event among Serbs.
Вашари are held on religious holidays, usually in the town/village square. Originated in the Middle Ages, they served to strengthen the bond between rulers and subjects, and later, they served to preserve the spirit of freedom under foreign rule.
People gather at the вашар in order to buy or sell cattle, household items, various handicrafts, but also to have fun, to compete in a sport, to sing, to dance the коло (kolo, Serbian traditional dance), to hang out with their friends and meet new people. А вашар used to be a perfect opportunity for young men and women of marriageable age to meet each other.
Some of the most famous вашари in Serbia are held in: Шабац (Šabac), Ваљево (Valjevo), Крушевац (Kruševac), Јагодина (Jagodina), Смедерево (Smederevo), Ниш (Niš) and Краљево (Kraljevo).
