the second time they met third time's the charm au (macklin x ellie)
august 2023
the second time macklin met ellie - or saw her, rather - he was too scared to even say a word to her.
it was humid and sticky in fenway park, the late august heat of boston almost intolerable. he had a red sox hat pulled low over his eyes, borrowed from one of the local guys, leaning back casually in his seat that was right behind the home team's dugout. he'd just moved into his dorm at boston university earlier that day with some of his new teammates, who in turn dragged him out to the ballpark to "get him situated."
he was sat between aiden and another freshman named gavin, macklin was pretty sure. macklin was being uncharacteristically quiet, having barely spoken since they sat down. he played it off as just being invested in the game - which he was, to be clear. he wasn't usually the biggest baseball fan, thinking it was a little too slow for his taste. but it was hard to ignore the atmosphere of the ballpark. and he knew enough of the rivalry between the red sox and the yankees to expect a good showing from both teams.
it was between halves of the eighth inning when he saw the family trying to take a picture down at barrier where the field met the seats. when he saw her.
with the help of an older girl and a boy, she was attempting to corral five younger kids into an arrangement where they could get a photo. a tall man stood on the edge of the group while a pregnant woman held the phone up, attempting to capture the group. he watched as the blonde girl sighed and picked up a boy of about seven, holding him on her hip as they were finally able to smile for the picture.
macklin couldn't look away if he tried. it was her. what kind of sick coincidence was this? the same girl he had met almost two years ago at his sister's tennis tournament, standing less than ten yards away from him on his first day in boston. the same girl who popped up on his instagram feed every now and then, the one he'd followed, and who had never followed him back, but he'd never brought himself to retract the request.
aiden sensed the shift in his younger brother's demeanor almost immediately. he followed macklin's gaze, furrowing his eyebrows before he recalled where he'd seen the girl before. his face lit up with a mischievous grin, and he looked up at his brother.
"dude, is that-"
"shut up," macklin hissed, lightly smacking his brother's shoulder in an effort to keep him quiet.
aiden laughed out loud. "bro, you have to go talk to her."
"what-?! absolutely not-" macklin looked around frantically, as if somehow she might have heard. "she's with her family, i can't just-"
"yes you can," aiden urged, nudging his brother. "you've met her before. you're not asking for her hand in marriage. just go say hi."
"i can't," macklin insisted. "she doesn't even know who i am. she never followed me back on instagram. and i'm pretty sure she has a boyfriend anyways, this football player guy, i saw a picture of them together. she's not interested."
aiden let out a long suffering sigh. "dude. its called playing the long game. she doesn't have to be interested yet. so what she didn't follow you back? that was like, two years ago, and you were ugly back then-"
"aiden, what the fuck?" macklin exclaimed, a little louder than he'd intended. his eyes darted to the girl again, and he did a double take when he realized she was looking back at him. she was still holding her little brother, and when she caught his eye, she gave him a soft little smile that made his stomach erupt in butterflies.
aiden, who had just watched the whole interaction, elbowed him, hard. "dude. she just smiled at you. thats an invitation if i've ever seen one. go say hi. now."
"aiden, stop, i can't," macklin groaned as he elbowed his brother right back. "what would i even say to her? 'hey, i've been pining over you for the past two years, i hope you remember who i am. oh, you don't? thats cool, no problem.' do you have any idea of how lame that is?"
"oh my god, mack, jesus, then don't go over. i was only trying to help," aiden rolled his eyes and leaned back in his seat, taking a gulp of water. "just saying, you either gotta bite the bullet and interact with the girl, or move on. its kind of embarrassing that you're seventeen and haven't even kissed a girl outside spin the bottle."
"fuck you," macklin spat out, but he couldn't help but sigh. he knew his brother was right. his inexperience was starting to get out of hand. he insisted that he was too focused on hockey to deal with a girlfriend or anything like that, which was mostly true, but the other hidden fact was that he was still secretly obsessed with this girl from two years ago. it was just something about her, something he couldn't put his finger on. maybe it was just a severe case of infatuation, but for some reason, he just couldn't get over it. he'd downloaded tiktok to watch her videos, for gods sake, and that hadn't helped with his crush.
macklin found his eyes drawn back to her as he watched her interact with the young boy in her arms. she was sitting down now, intently watching the game, explaining something to him as he nodded along. she was right there, god, aiden was right, he should go talk to her. whats the worst that could happen if he just said a quick hi? he'd almost built up the courage when one of the yankees players struck out swinging, and some song he didn't recognize started playing over the speakers. the crowds were cheering, and he let his gaze drift out to where the players were on the field, celebrating the win.
when he looked back to where the girl and her family were just sitting, they were gone. macklin swore he caught a glimpse of her blonde hair and navy jersey disappearing back down the tunnel into the interior of the ballpark, and then nothing.
later that night, when macklin was scrolling through instagram, he came across the picture that he'd witnessed that family taking earlier, underneath an all-too-familiar username. it had come out nice. the family didn't all look identical, half blonde and half brunette, some brown eyes and some blue, but something about the in-between of their faces made them a unit.
he scrolled through each individual slide of the post, smiling slightly at a candid of ellie and her younger brother as she explained an event in the game to him. when he came to a picture of her alone, sitting in her seat, macklin's eyes snagged on himself in the background, watching the photo get taken. he was barely recognizeable, with the baseball cap shading his face, but he could see enough to realize that he was staring. he groaned and made a note to never mention this to aiden, knowing that he would never hear the end of it.
the post was captioned "favorite place + favorite people"
macklin sighed and laid back on his bed, shutting his eyes and imagining a day where the second part of that caption would include him too.
note: sorry for going mia i have had an absolutely diabolical week you guys don't even know the half of it but hope you enjoy i love this one and i love my babies ok bye

the first time they met third time's the charm au (macklin x ellie)
note- i knew very little about tennis before this, and i did a lot of research, but a lot of things in this series will come from my head because i want them to. however, if i make any huge mistakes, i will always appreciate a correction and will try to implement it as well as i can while retaining the general plot!
november 2021
the first time ellie met macklin, she didn't even really catch his name.
it was no more than a passing introduction. she was fourteen years old, at her first international tournament representing her country. after the conclusion of the main tournament, which she had won, as expected, she'd been selected to play a charity doubles bracket with a younger canadian girl.
charlie was sweet, an extremely promising talent for only being twelve years old. she'd talked ellie's ear off all day, desperate to know everything about her life as a "social media star", which ellie was quick to brush off. she was a tennis player, not some shallow influencer, despite the lululemon and wilson sponsorships.
and she proved that all day. even though charlie was younger, the pair played surprisingly well together. the immediate chemistry they gained upon their meeting had transferred onto the court, and the two girls ended up winning the bracket.
although ellie was certainly happy about the victory, especially as it was for charity, charlie was ecstatic. as in, practically bouncing off the walls with joy. in a conversation between the two a few years later, ellie would learn that it was her first time winning something with meaning, but for now, it was fun to watch the other girl virtually exude sunshine.
she was being dragged across the court before she knew what was happening, hearing charlie rambling on about something to do with her family. and suddenly, ellie was parked in front of five people with charlie's eyes. two adults, most likely her parents, a mother who clearly gave most of her genes to her daughter, and a father wearing a proud smile, were first to greet the two. while charlie embraced her parents, already starting to run her mouth about everything in the match, ellie found her eyes drifting to the three boys standing next to their parents. one younger, one older, and one that seemed more or less her age.
charlie seemed to suddenly remember that ellie was standing there, brushing through names in quick succession, "mom, dad, aiden, macklin, rj," but seemed to forget to point out which boy was which. the one who looked the most like charlie had his green eyes locked on ellie throughout the whole introduction. he caught an elbow from his taller brother, who was grinning at him, before he seemingly worked up the courage for a single word.
"hi."
ellie looked at him, smiling softly. he was cute, that was clear enough. a little awkward looking, with a small gap between his front teeth and a faint red flush on his cheeks, but it was endearing in a way. she was about to respond when she heard her name called from across the court.
"ellie," brett shouted from the fence, standing next to her family and her best friend, leah. "time to go, kid. we're gonna be late to the flight."
it was a rushed goodbye, a hug with charlie and a promise to stay in contact, to send tournament schedules for the next season. a quick hello and a goodbye to her parents, and a compliment for raising such a talented daughter. one smile at the three boys, and ellie was turning away and heading back to the congregation that was her family at the edge of the court.
as she walked away, she heard one of the boys laugh, loud and clear, saying something about "someone's got a crush," and another one begging him to stop embarrassing him. ellie's curiosity begged her to turn back around and see who was talking about who, but she kept walking back to her family.
later that night, ellie was scrolling absentmindedly through her phone. she had shut off her notifications thanks to the post-tournament follower influx that always happened, with her main accounts usually gaining thousands after a new exposure.
and lost in that rush was one notification, left unanswered for years:
mackcelebrini started following you.
yeah, someone definitely had a crush.

meet ellie's ex-boyfriends third time's the charm au (macklin and ellie)
note- this might seem insignificant but i pinky swear its important to the plot okay :) warnings: brief mention of sa in paragraph 5, not explicit but implied
ryan hartman was ellie's first real boyfriend. he's your typical highschool boy, a little too loud, a little too competitive in gym class, and not exactly the sharpest tool in the shed. ryan and ellie were family friends growing up, but were never that close until high school. ryan was the kind of guy that had always just been around. they went to sophomore homecoming together, and officially started dating a week later. as a boyfriend, ryan was always sweet, if a little inattentive to what ellie needed at times. they never really did too much, just went to second base a couple times while hanging out and watching a movie. her family loved him, even if they secretly thought that the pair might've been better off as friends.
ellie broke up with ryan shortly after leah passed away in the fall of their junior year, because she felt like everything had gotten too much for her to have a boyfriend at that point. and in truth, after they broke up, ellie and ryan grew even closer. ryan turned out to be a much better friend than boyfriend, and stuck right by ellie's side through all of her dark months. he helped her keep up with school and was fiercely protective over her, without ever pushing for them to get back together. they're still great friends to this day, and ryan is one of the only people that ellie trusts enough to tell about macklin when she starts dating him.
in the winter after leah passed, ellie had a few casual flings, nothing serious, just a few hookups here and there at local parties or away tennis tournaments. she wasn't looking for anything serious, not until corbin came along.
corbin lemieux was ellie's first experience with a guy with truly bad intentions. she met him at a northeastern frat party in january of her junior year. she was in the worst place mentally that she'd ever been, and was all but craving someone to make her feel wanted again, and corbin was all too happy to comply. he was a sophomore on the northeastern hockey team- yes, a sophomore, a twenty year old man dating a sixteen year old highschooler. in her heart, she knew it was horribly wrong, but she was sick of being sad all the time. nobody knew, except for ryan, who absolutely hated corbin, but was ignored every time he told her to dump him. things were good for a while, until corbin started trying to pressure her to do more with him. she was fine with the making out, and most of the hand stuff, but the thought of opening up to someone like that made her feel sick.
the night ellie and corbin broke up, it was their three month anniversary. they were at a party that was oddly reminiscent of the night they mat, and ellie caught corbin making out with some other random blonde. she was already a few drinks deep, and totally flipped out on him in front of everyone. ellie downed her drink in one go, and stormed off as corbin chased her. she started feeling uncoordinated and woozy, too woozy for the amount she had drank. the next thing she knew, she was half-naked in one of the rooms upstairs, and will and stephen were dragging corbin off her and beating him black and blue. she never pressed charges, because she was too scared to admit to anyone that she had actually been dating him. needless to say, will and stephen were relentlessly protective of her after that night. none of them ever mentioned it to anyone, not even ellie's parents. although she got over it relatively quickly, thanks to not remembering any of what actually happened, it lingers in the back of her mind whenever she's with someone new.

awww thank you so much you’re so sweet!!
meet ellie's family third time's the charm au (macklin x ellie)
note- ages are based off of when macklin and ellie met for the third time in september 2024, not today's date.
the parents
april smith, originally april harmon, was born in 1972 in duluth, minnesota, making her 52 at the time of writing. she was a star women's basketball player at the university of michigan in the 90's, but unfortunately suffered a severe meniscus tear in her junior year, leading to a forced early retirement. however, the extra free time she found, she spent doing peer tutoring. she ended up meeting liam when he was struggling in a business law course, and as they say, the rest is history. they were married two years after their graduation from michigan, and they relocated to boston so she could attend law school at harvard. they still reside there today, and she is a successful criminal defense attorney. ellie adores her mother, but occasionally feels a bit resentful that she is so often busy and leaves her older children to take care of the younger ones.
liam smith was also born in 1972, in lexington, massachusetts. he grew up there before committing to play baseball at the university of michigan. he was widely renowned as a league-bound lefty pitcher prior to a severe ligament tear in his elbow, requiring tommy john surgery, which failed. he graduated from michigan with a degree in business, but he now coaches the boston college men's baseball team. he has a deep love of the boston red sox, dating back to his childhood, which he shares with ellie. she is extremely grateful to have something to bond with her dad over, as it is so easy to feel lost within such a huge family, especially one as successful as hers.
liam was the one who introduced the family's main rule: every kid would pick a sport from the time they were little, and they were meant to stick with it. it wasn't meant to force them or burn them out, only to show them the benefits of hard work and dedication, and the importance of passions. they could pick any sport they wanted, as long as none of the other siblings were already doing it. liam grew up in a competitive house, and wanted his family to only ever build each other up. he knew what it was like to compare himself to his siblings, and wanted to avoid that in any possible way. and it worked- though they have their petty squabbles, his kids lack any main disagreements with which they can set themselves apart, which he absolutely loves and takes a lot of pride in.
the siblings
chloe smith is the oldest of the nine, born on april 12, 2002. she's 22, and is in her senior year at dartmouth. she plays center for the women's ice hockey team. once her season is over, she will be declaring for the pwhl draft. her and ellie are extremely close despite the age gap, and have remained so as they've grown up. chloe also has a long-term boyfriend, tyler, who she met her freshman year, and they're expected to get engaged any day now.
stephen smith is the oldest boy, born on october 22, 2003. he's 20 years old and is a sophomore at the university of miami. he's a point guard for the men's basketball team, and is expected to declare for the nba draft following this season. though he can be considered a bit of a player and a partier to most, he's always been a great brother to all his siblings, and was one of the best role models for ellie growing up. she loves her big brother, and the pair are probably two of the closest out of all the siblings.
riley smith is the next after ellie, born on september 9, 2010. she's 14, in eighth grade, and an incredibly accomplished swimmer. she's more or less the tomboy of the family, and if you'll ever find two of the siblings arguing, it'll likely be her and ellie. going against her dad's idea for building each other up, riley secretly harbors a tiny bit of envy for her older sister. she sees ellie as better than her in every way- blonder, prettier, smarter, nicer, more athletic. she loves her older sister, but finds it difficult to find herself outside ellie's shadow. over time, especially as she grows into her own person more and ellie prepares to leave for college, she sees that ellie was never the problem, and they grow even closer
joni and ava smith go somewhat hand in hand, because it is rare you'll see them apart. they aren't twins, but they might as well be for how much they look alike and how much time they spend together. joni was born on june 30, 2012, and is currently 12 years old, and ava was born on july 4, 2013, and is currently 11. while joni plays soccer and ava plays field hockey, they often have practices at similar times and on adjoining fields, leading to lots of time spent together around their respective sports. once ellie gets her license, she is the main one who brings them to practices, and both the girls are obsessed with their sister. they want to be just like her in every way that counts- kind, responsible, protective. they constantly brag about ellie being their sister to whoever will listen, and though ellie tells them to cut it out, she secretly loves how much her sisters are clearly proud of her.
joseph smith is eight years old, and couldn't be more like his father if he tried. born on april 13, 2016, he's been the family's ray of sunshine ever since. though he'd never admit it, liam had been waiting for a son to put into baseball from when he was old enough to hold a bat, and joey was all too happy to comply. he's proud to be a pitcher, just like his dad was, and recently won the mvp award for his town 8u league, which made his father cry. he loves all his big siblings, but has a special soft spot for ellie and stephen especially. right now, ellie is trying to teach him how to play the guitar, which he's also grown to love, but he honestly prefers listening to her play.
lucy smith is the family's little princess, and she knows it. she's six years old, born on august 24, 2018, and she got used to being the youngest for the first five years of her life. she's often the loudest in the family, and is still sort of learning the concepts of patience and an inside voice. her parents put her in gymnastics in an attempt to tire her out during the day, but she's started coming home from practice with more energy than before. she often forces her siblings to do "competitions" with her, where she makes them do cartwheels and handstands and tells everyone to pick a winner. obviously, lucy wins every time.
finally, sam smith is the newest addition to the family. he's ten months old now, having been born on november 1, 2024, and has every one of his family members wrapped around his little finger. because of how busy her parents are, ellie has become sort of a third parent to sam. she often has him in her lap when she's doing homework, or in her arms while she's doing chores. he's the cuddliest baby any of them have ever met, clearly lacking the boundless amounts of energy that the previous two kids got. sam is proof of how much the family supports each other. april and liam have promised profusely that sam is the last kid.
the cousins
while there are almost twenty smith cousins total, grace and will smith grew up right next door to ellie's family, and are therefore the closest to her. their fathers, brothers who grew closer as they grew older, aren't sure exactly how they ended up moving into adjacent homes, but they're endlessly grateful that they did. grace, although always kind to ellie, has always been closer with chloe, mainly based on them being closer in age. will, on the other hand, has always been closer with ellie. everyone says they look just like each other, and their personalities are very similar as well. due to her outgoing nature, ellie has always been friendly with a lot of will's teammates, especially when he comes to boston college. will is fiercely protective of her, and has fended off countless guys who've tried dating her over the years. he's the one who thinks her and macklin would be a good fit in the first place, and not-so-subtly tries to set them up.

meet ellie third time's the charm au (macklin x ellie) warnings: brief mention of suicide in the last sentence of paragraph 6 elizabeth lily smith, known to all as ellie, was born on may 26, 2007 in boston, massachusetts. she was the third born child in her family. her parents, april and liam, were both collegiate athletes at the university of michigan before sustaining lasting injuries. sports make up a huge part of their family, with every one of their children excelling in their chosen discipline.
speaking of the rest of the family, by the time she is sixteen, ellie has eight siblings. yes, eight. she has an older sister and brother, plus four younger sisters and two younger brothers. while it seems overwhelming to most, she couldn't imagine her life without them. you can read more about them and their relationships here.
she is also extremely close with her first cousins, will and grace, who she grew up next door to. she has an especially close relationship with will, due to him being closer in age with her than any of her other siblings. everyone says they look more like twins than cousins, and they have remained close even as he moved a lot for hockey.
she began playing tennis when she was four years old, after her dad brought her to a match that his friend's daughter was playing in, and she was instantly hooked. she started playing in tournaments when she was seven years old, and as she progressed, she started gaining more and more recognition. she's been consistently ranked in the top brackets for her age group since she started playing competitively. she's almost a different person entirely on the court, shifting from her typical sunny persona into a hyper-competitive version of herself. she travels frequently for tennis tournaments, both nationwide and internationally.
her coach, brett, has been training her since she was eight years old. while he initially had more clients, as ellie progressed through the years, his focus has shifted to being just her coach, as well as her manager. he's like another father figure to her, and his family is just an extension of her own. although he is frequently tough on her and they've gotten into many heated arguments over the years, ellie absolutely adores brett, and attributes the majority of her success to his training.
another important part of her life is her social media presence. ellie started making tiktoks during the pandemic, as everyone did, starting with silly dance videos and tennis clips. but as the "get ready with me" trend began popularizing, she shifted to that kind of talking content, creating videos detailing her life and advice for others on how to deal with mental health and stress. as of today, she has over four million followers on her tiktok, and one million on instagram. her online image is extremely important to her, although she constantly maintains that she's a tennis player first, not an influencer. additionally, after she lost her best friend, leah, to suicide in november of 2023, she launched a campaign that raised over $500,000 for youth mental health organizations.
and while you'd never guess it from a quick scroll through her socials, ellie has been through it time and time again. after losing her best friend, she went through a self-destructive cycle for months where she ended up partying and drinking the pain away. she had countless shitty boyfriends, who you can read about here, and found herself in a deeper mental hole day after day. but one day, her siblings, especially her older sister, all but forced her to pick herself back up. and over time, she did manage to heal. she relied on her family and friends heavily, and grew closer with them as a result. by september of 2024, she's all but back to normal.
and that's when she meets macklin. for the third time, that is.

Affirmations for Trade Deadline Week
i am not inappropriately attached to that 4th liner
i am a person who can accept change without vomiting
losing that player will not damage my life irreparably
it is at least theoretically possible that my gm will make good trades
the amount of crying i do when i think too hard about hockey players being separated from their best friends (even though i don't know them at all and this is their job and they're very familiar with it and there are systems in place to welcome them and it's going to be fine) is a normal amount and i don't need to feel embarrassed about it
i am not going to find my gm's address and set up termite colonies in the walls of his house
or fire ants
or black mold
oh how i love michael misa like that’s my son
