Origin Systems
Origin Systems was a video game developer company located in Austin, Texas. The company was an American company and was active from 1983 to 2004. In addition, they are also best known for the Wing Commander and Ultima series. It’s founded by Robert Garriott and Richard Garriott, who are brothers, Owen Garriott their father and Bueche Chuck back in 1983. Originally, Origin was located in the Garriott’s garage in Houston, Texas. Moreover, their first game was Ultima 3: Exodus and because of the game’s created reputation, the company survived the video game crash that took place that year. In addition, the company released several non-Ultima games and Richard claimed that he got the same royalty amount as the other game creators. By the time 1988 rolled by, the company had 15 game developers in Austin, Texas and 35 other workers in New Hampshire.
It was officially announced that in September 1992, EA bought Origin for around $35 million in stock. The company, with around $13 million in yearly revenue, stated that it had considered an IPO before signing the contract. In 1996, according to a report, the company had more than 300 employees. The next year, the company had developed one of the first graphical MMORPGs named Ultima Online. Over the years the company had developed many notable in which the Crusader series, Strike Commander, Wings of Glory and System Shock are included.
Wing Commander
Wing Commander is one of the more popular games they’ve created. Since the first game was such a success, Origin decided to turn the games into series. In addition, the game is a media franchise involving space fighting simulation video games. This franchise started back in 1990 with the release of Wing Commander. Originally, the game was officially published for MS-DOS on September 26, 1990. Sometime later, the game was ported to the CD32, Sega CD, Super Nintendo and Amiga. 4 years later, the game re-published for PC under the name Wing Commander I. In addition, an improved remake called Super Wing Commander was created for the 3DO in 1994.
It was earlier bought by Electronic Arts for around $35 million. In February 2004, the studio was officially shutdown by EA.
