Is censorship in art/entertainment required? Why or why not?

I can see censorship needed in entertainment as in television and radio for younger children listening, although children should be obscured from fowler language, most often they are not, a way to “protect” them from such language and sexual context is to censor it. As for art if we are talking in terms of gallery’s, paintings, drawings then I see where there many still need to be a warning, I know is some shows I’ve been in they ask for “child friendly” paintings or they will say “adults only “ preparing people for what they are to expect, is understandable but we also shouldn’t tell artist they cannot create such art or entertainment. A warning such as the ratings on movies should be put into place. Although we all know that children are not always protecting from such images, language, I feel as a overall society we try our best to “protect” the young.

Do you think ideas and concepts by artists can be dangerous? How?

When looking art thought the years many famous paintings have been controversial and considered dangerous but as times changed and so did people the old piece becomes “normal” and new pieces became the dangerous ones, in all movements of art there will be something someone will have a problem with and if that did not exist then is the movement considered a movement? The idea and concept thought of my artists are parts of their lives their mind and no one’s mind is completely “happy” and to be honest are not the best piece created the most dangerous in the eyes of the artist. If you are not taking a leap into the dark side or dangerous side of being an artist, then are you truly an artist? If your not willing to create something just because others might not like it, the whole point of being an artist is to make people think and take a look at their lives, I think Vincent van Gogh said it best “ art is to console those broken by life.” We are all broken and the broken part of being and artist is creating the dangerous thoughts in hopes of consoling someone else life.

Where should the line be drawn with censorship?

I feel the line for censorship should be drawn by the person creating such are what they choose to reveal because it is their art their vision, in showing such things like I said before their needs to be a warning / rating of the context and if it is child friendly or for adults only.

I also totally understand why television should be censored due to children hearing swear words, seeing nudity, etc. I feel that artwork, such as, paintings, drawings, and photos should have a warning stating that these images show nudity, so the parents can decide if minors can view. Censorship can be a controversial topic for some. I don’t feel that ideas or concepts can be dangerous to people, but I do feel that they have an impact on people, and the way they view things.

Week 15 Response

The article, “Freedom of Expression in The Arts and Entertainment” states that a free society is based on the principle that each and every individual has the right to decide what art or entertainment he or she wants - or does not want - to receive or create. Therefore, the answer is no, art is not required to be censored because we possess the Freedom of expression for ourselves. In the article it discusses how images of violence cause people to act in a destructive way. There is no evidence that fictional violence leads to real life violence. A study conducted on children showed that children who watch TV violence are more aggressive in playing sports, popping balloons or hitting dolls, but not actual criminal violence against another person. I’m unsure how I feel about violent art, etc and how it affects a child, but I don’t feel that looking at a violent painting would cause someone to become violent. I personally feel that certain art should be censored for certain children ages like certain video games are censored for specific ages. I believe certain cultures have different views on explicit content and violence. Many cultures have different beliefs which can have an impact on what they view as inappropriate for certain ages or groups of people. In the United States people are very vocal about opinions and wanting to express themselves through music, paintings, drawings, dance, etc. I feel that people should be able to express themselves through their art. I feel that people in the United States where we possess the freedom of speech should be allowed to express their feelings on subject matter revolving around the government. I feel that censorship has become less restrictive due to people wanting to express their feelings, and not caring about others opinions. I’m unsure where it will go from here, that is difficult to predict.

Week 12

Title: Chalk Cliffs on Rugen

Artist: Caspar David Fridrich

Year: 1818

Many art historians have said they see this painting as depicted as in relation to Death, and the threat to life by death. Which once you understand the figures in the painting and what they seem the represent the depicting of Death can not seem to disappear from my mind as well. Let’s start from left to right. The women with a bright and beautiful red dress seems to be reaching into the abyss it is said that what she is doing exactly is unclear is she threated by the abyss and what it represents or is she simply compelled by the natural beauty around her? The color of her dress plays a big part Red which when you look at the painting your eye goes to her first, we all know that the color red can represent many thing such as love, anger,ect…but here it is represented as LOVE. Next the Man in the middle almost laying on the ground it is said that he is a representation of the painter himself and that his hat is a sign of humility as he seeks for foot holding in the grass which in itself symbolizes a transience of life as he reaches into the abyss of DEATH before him. The man’s clothes are Blue in this painting represents faith. But in some ways could also represent sadness or death. Then the man leaning against a Dying tree looking out to the sail boats which seem to represent the souls opening to eternal life and correspond the figures of the men. This man’s clothes are Green which represents Hope. All together the figures clothing could be said to represent the Christian theological virtues.

My Personal Thoughts:

When first looking at the painting I felt this overwhelming feeling of comfort but also a sense of loss. When looking at the foreground the dark shadows that surround the figures, I got a sense of sorrow, loss, and fear. Once continuing to look at the painting I was drawn to the man against the tree looking out as if looking or waiting for something/someone. As though he was looking for hope. When ever I see or think of what I would call this a sunset painting we tend to see the shadows or darkness set in the back but he set it in the foreground and made the water and mountains seem so bright and hopeful. As though he new that with death comes divine warmth. That the mistakes we make in out lives do not define our afterlife.

When I look at this painting it gives me a calming feeling. When I look at the sunset of this image, it brings a calming effect. In the foreground the shadowing around the people may represent sadness but looking for something. Looking for happiness. I love how they use dark in the foreground and light coloring in the background. I feel that the light colors in the background are a sign of hope. I think this is a beautiful painting.

Romanticism

“Il Bacio” (Italian for The Kiss), aromantic painting by artist Francesco Hayez. The Kiss was painted in 1859 depicts a couple from the middle ages, embracing while they kiss each other. This iconic kiss represents the birth of Italy. It has become to represent the spirit of Risorgimento, or Italian unification, which lasted from 1815 to 1871. The couple’s clothing has four colors - red, green, white, and sky blue. These colors correspond with the colors of the national flags of Italy and France which represents the alliance between the two countries during the Second War of Independence. The only color in this painting is the couple which makes the couple stand out. This focus on the couple highlights the historical triumph and national unity. The main focus of this painting is the kiss itself, not the couple.

The man in the painting has his foot placed on the first step of the stairs as if he were about to rush off, and her hands hold him delicately, as if she knows she would have to let him go any second. There is an ominous shadow in the background of this painting that causes me to believe there may be danger soon to occur. There's a shadow of a man's figure in the lower left corner of the painting which makes me believe there is a guard on his way to take the man and maybe that is why he has to run off. The couple is centered in the image and are the only part of the image that have color. The emphasis of this image is on the couple. The colors the couple are wearing are strong and enhance the image of the couple. This painting shows motion from the woman and man holding each other and embracing one another during their kiss. The light blue of the woman's dress is a cool color which shows contrast against the warm, red of the man’s outfit which makes the colors stand out. This image also shows depth. The walls, stairs, and shadows show depth of the image, showing that the man and woman are closer to the viewer which also emphasizes the couple.

I find this painting very beautiful and I love how the focus of this painting is the actual kiss. When looking at this piece of art, you have no idea who this couple is which makes me think that the painting does represent more than just a kiss. I find it very interesting how they incorporated the colors of Italy and France to represent the alliance between the two countries. The kiss seems very passionate, and I feel that he looks like he is in a hurry and needs to run off soon. I love that the emphasis of this painting is the couple due to the shadows in the background and the bright blue of the woman's dress. The woman looks as though she is holding on dearly to him, and makes me think that he is about to run off because he is in danger. This painting keeps you wondering what exactly the story line is behind the image and that is why I enjoy this image.

Ai Weiwei

It is hard to explain in words his art and honestly it let me speakless, because his work is absolutely amazing and beautiful. Ai Weiwei is in my own opinion a true artist who speaks and does what he feels is right in expressing himself with apologizing for it. He speaks his truth on all topics. His is an artist and he is an activist, but overall he is a person choosing to express himself in such amazing ways. He is not afraid to fight for what is right or what others are afraid to fight for and he does so with his art, he not only shares his personal experience through it but also the worlds. Though his art speaks about politic views in China it relates to people all over the world. I believe that his message and mission will not hinder humanity but build it to be something better, as an artist I take inspiration from him and what he does. Art through history is based on the artist view of politics, world, and personal problems as well as religion we wouldn’t have art if not for the “problem” artist face, the beauty in the world inspired artist just as much as the pain in it does. As of right now in this world with a global pandemic we see artist creating works that are truly amazing and is some ways are truly about politics, and global problems. I feel all artist are activists in some ways.

I also feel that he is a true artist. Ai Weiwei expresses his feelings through his art and creates amazing artwork. His art has a story behind it. He stands up for what he feels important. I like the example of the Chinese Earthquakes and how he began to investigate the building structures due to the multiple children who went missing after the collapse of a school building. Even though the Chinese government wanted him to leave it alone, he still spoke out and created a massive piece of art using 9,000 backpacks in remembrance of these children. He has strong emotions toward certain occurrences, and uses art to express his feelings toward the events. I personally feel that he is a strong willed man who’s goal is to send a message to people.

Ai Weiwei

My initial impression of Ai Weiwei’s work is that it is art. I find his work very interesting and creative. His art is different and reflects his feelings and life journey. He seems like a sensitive guy who expresses his voice through his art to make an influence on people, and to send a message relating to current events. My initial impression of Ai Weiwei is that he is a kind and creative man who wants to be heard. I feel that his work definitely constitutes art. Art is defined as the expression or application of human creative skill and imagination, in a visual form such as painting or sculpture. Ai Weiwei’s art is sculptures that he uses to express his feelings. His art also shows his creativity and allows him to express his emotions to the population. Activism is defined as the policy or action of using vigorous campaigning to bring about political social change. I’m not sure if I would define his work as activism. His art reflects his feelings toward certain events that have occurred throughout the worl, and he definitely expresses his feelings through his art. When he was in China after the earthquakes, he began to investigate a school falling and multiple children were missing. The Chinese police did not want him involved in any of this, but yet he created a large piece of art out of 9,000 backpacks to remember the children. He was then beaten for his actions. Therefore, you may define him as an activist for creating his art even though the government did not want him to because he wants the children to be remembered. I feel that his work is fine art due to his creativity, but there are certain things that don’t make it fine art. I feel that Ai Weiwei creates art to send a message. He does not create art to only be appreciated for his imagination or intellectual content. He is making a voice through his art. For example, he created pieces of art based on the European refugee crisis. Ai Weiwei states, “growing up in the cultural revolution had a very strong impact on my becoming an artist. He had to do the most hateful work even for villagers. So everyday we had to deal with this kind of discrimination.” He is a refugee himself, so it brings up certain emotions, causing him to create pieces of art. The earthquake in China caused him to become involved in interviewing and finding information others tried to hide. He created a piece of art out of 9,000 backpacks to remember the children who were missing. I feel that individual freedom is very important in today’s world to an extent. People should have the freedom to create pieces of art and to express themselves as long as it is not harming anyone. He should possess the freedom to express his emotions through his art and speak out about his feelings.

Narcisuss

Carvaggio’s Narcissus caught my eye the second I saw it. Painted from 1597-1599 this painting captures a moment in greek mythology. I love the tales of greek legend, and this painting gives us a glimpse into this mythical universe. Narcissus is a beautiful young man whom many fell in love with, however, he thought none to be as beautiful as he and only showed them disdain. One day he walked by a pool of water and fell in love with his reflection. Carvaggio captures this moment of self adoration and longing for that which you can’t have. As the man he has fallen for is his reflection, Narcissus can never reach him. This piece is recognizable as one of Carvaggio’s because of the elements of design that reflect the baroque era. A clear moment in time is captured, showing what was real and not an idealized version. Carvaggo utilizes light and shadows to highlight the scene in a way that makes it impossible to look at anything but Narcissus and his reflection. Depth is used in a way that we can almost feel Narcissus leaning over the pool. His shoulders and knee pulling him out of the painting, leaning towards us. Paired with his reflection Narcissus’s body creates a square, closing himself off from the rest of the painting. I think this reflects the emotion he would have felt, for in his mind no one was as beautiful as him, thus no one else was allowed into his world. A world that Carvaggio captures in this moment of self admiration. Looking at Narcissus’s face his longing is almost tangible. The way his eyes are shadowed and there are small almost indiscernible creases on his forehead. This piece is also distinguishable because of the reflection. You see narcissus in reality but also this mirror image reflected back from the water. In the reflection, the dark and light are intensified, creating deeper shadows and brighter highlights. Almost everything about him is dimmer, except for those distinguishable highlights. His clothes go from a soft white to almost golden in this idealized version of himself in the water. I think this gives Narcissus even more emotion and personality because in himself he can only see the highlights, and I think this tells us how he refuses to look at parts of himself that maybe aren’t so great. Overall I love this painting and think it serves as a warning, to remind us what is really important in life.

I find this painting done by Carvaggio very interesting. The scene is very simple. There is a pitch black background, and he is leaning over the dark water looking at his reflection. In the mytch, Narcissus is the most handsome youth in central Greece, but he never finds anyone attractive enough to love. One day he crosses a pool of water and catches his own reflection. He falls in love with the reflection and tries to kiss it. The puddle ripples and hides the reflection. He is afraid of scaring away his newfound love, he sits and stares at the reflection until he dies of thirst. I feel that it also shows what is important in life.

The Decapitation of Saint John the Baptist, 1607 by Caravaggio

The painting done by Caravaggio is quite a simple painting. The painting is a large shallow space with a cluster of figures or people on the left which is balanced by the wall and window with two men watching. The painting shows an executor about to execute John by decapitating him. The executor and the man behind him show no signs of remorse toward the execution. The lighting of the painting is focused on the decapitation, therefore focusing on the men in the painting. The light basically penetrates the scene, putting focus on the decapitation. When looking at this image my eyes go directly to the man pointing his index finger down due to the light focused on his hand, then my eyes go directly to the executioner where I see him holding down Saint John the Baptist head, and holding a dagger in the left hand. When I look at this image I feel that the executioner is about to finish the job he started. The woman in the background looks horrified. She is the only one in the painting that is responding sympathetically to the scene that is occuring. When I look at the scene it seems kind of strange that she is covering her ears and not her eyes. Which makes me think that the sounds are even worse than the sight of the decapitation. The background of the image is very dark and gloomy. To the right of the painting, there are two men watching from the window trying to see what is going on. There is obviously action taking place in the scene. The executioner is showing force when pushing John’s head into the ground, and the woman to the left is setting down a dish. This painting makes me feel sad, and angry because they are about to decapitate this man. The painting also makes me angry because the other figures in this painting are just watching, and do not attempt to do anything about the situation.

Week 7 - Bosch

To find the intended meaning, we need to think deeper about the meaning of Hieronymus Bosch’s pieces. When I first read the title, before even looking at the piece of art, I imagined it would be something of unusual art and of greater creativity. When evacuating the artwork, I was very impressed but found it a challenge trying to figure out the deeper meanings of the images. In the Art Talk video of Hieronymus Bosch provided to us, the narrator talks about a key that we would think of opening a door. But it is necessary to ask more questions to find the precision of the piece. What door does the key open and why is this so? Is this the door to the mind? We have to be curious and relentless while looking at this piece of art. I had to be very open-minded while evaluating this piece, because I am not used to art work such as the Garden of Earthly Delights. Illustrative surrealism is an artistic style that is not one I would usually have chosen to look into the deeper meaning, but as I got into it, I found it more and more interesting and developed a theory for what this piece means to me specifically.

I feel that there are many places where symbolism is present, but a few specifically stand out to me. The largest symbolism to me is where the animals are feeding the humans. In this snippet, a duck is feeding a man some sort of berry with its beak, as if it is its own child. This is one of the first images I noticed. To me, this is symbolizing the fact that nature and its animals inevitably take care and provide for humans. I think of myself and my farming background when I find a way to compare this to present day. Although farmers take care of their animals, they take care of us in that they provide us with food, clothing, and other things we need. Again, this picture depicts that animals are necessary for human life, whether it be birds, chickens, or cows. Even vegetarian and vegans utilize goods that had animal contributors.

The second scene I chose is not specifically to this image but that there are a few black-skinned humans dispersed among a mostly white group. In the picture I have included, a white person seems to be explaining something to a black person. I think this signifies how humans should be inclusive. I find it interesting that Bosch included this in his artwork as this was done back in the late 1400s. This was when there seemed to be racism occurring in society. This shows me that Bosch found inclusiveness important.

Originally, it was hard to find meaning in this piece, but as I looked closer, I was able to depict images that meant something to me. This piece of art is full of wonderful color and creativity which is very appealing to the eye. Despite the odd figures found in this piece, I think it is beautifully created.

When looking at this piece of art, I also found it slightly difficult to totally understand what the artist was trying to depict. Looking closer at each scene it made it easier to break the image as a whole into scenes. The first scene you chose has a strong meaning, and I find it very interesting that the bird is feeding a human from its beak. The bird could symbolize that humans benefit from animals, and that in the beginning of time God created us all equal. Animals provide humans with food, clothing, and other things. The second image you chose I also find interesting, and quite difficult to understand. It shows an image with mostly white people with one black person. To me it looks like the white person is introducing something to the black person. I feel that this shows equality, and how God created everyone equal. I feel that the whole image depicts sin, and chaos in some way.

The Garden of Earthly Delights is Bosch’s most complex and enigmatic creation. The overall theme of this piece of art is the fate of humanity. Fruit appears several times throughout the central panel. The first image makes me think of the Garden of Eden due to the nude people picking apples from the trees. In this section the man is offering a strawberry to the woman with a leering expression, I feel as though this a twist on the bible’s depiction at the Garden of Eden. At the Garden of Eden Adam gives Eve the apple from the tree, but in this image the man is offering her a strawberry, not an apple. The strawberry may depict love or even sin. Strawberries can be depicted as a “love fruit,” so maybe he is offering his love to the woman. But since this image is similar to Adam offering the apple to Eve, this could be a symbol of sin or lust.

The second image is a scene in The Garden of Earthly Delights that has a few individual scenes occuring. The bottom half of this image depicts the Garden of Eden, and looks as though God is standing with Adam and Eve. I feel as though this image shows that the animals in this image are just as important as Adam, Eve, and God. I feel as though this image shows the introduction of woman to man, and shows human procreative capacity. I find this image very interesting how it shows God communicating with the two figures that symbolize Adam and Eve. I also wonder if the tree behind Adam that kind of looks like a cactus depicts the tree Adam and Eve were not supposed to eat from. The animals in this scene make me very curious because there are multiple small animals in the foreground of this image, but many large animals near the background. This scene is to the left of the Garden of Earthly Delights piece of art and then when you look to the center or middle section of this artwork you see “all hell breaking loose.”

When you look at this image as a whole, you can clearly see how the left section is God talking with Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden with God’s creations of earth, water, land, mountains, animals, etc. Then when you look to the right of, or to the middle section of this piece of art I see chaos, and multiple people showing signs of sin. When I look at this piece of art it literally looks like all hell is breaking loose, and it is a chaotic scene. It’s difficult to decide what to focus your eyes on, but it’s such a creative piece of artwork.

Week 4 - Art in the Conflict of Hong Kong

In recent years, our world has had many crimes, natural disasters, human disasters, and other unfortunate events that result in death and/or hard to people and their culture. After reading this article, I am even more saddened by the things that happen in our world today. I learned a lot about what happens and how dangerous these circumstances really are.

We are all human. We make mistakes, but sometimes we cannot control what is brought to us. My dad always tells me that hard times make good people. I think that in a similar way, this quote can relate to situations such as the instances in Hong Kong.

People in Hong Kong are among great turmoil, but I think it is wonderful that some people turn to art in these times, because I do the same thing at home. Maybe it is a coping mechanism or simply something for them to remember these times. Either way, the art work and people made during the hardships is special. I can imagine the emotion people living there are full with. When this emotion is put into a piece of artwork, an original masterpiece is made. Art reminds the people where they come from and what their purpose is. In this case, it is being used as a symbol for the freedom wanted Art brings people together; hopefully the art created during this time will help in ending confrontation. Art brings me to a place of solitude. I hope that the power of art can bring this area to peace.

This article makes me very sad for the people of Hong Kong, but I find it very interesting and informative. This traumatic experience in Hong Kong brings out many emotions in people and leads them to create art. Their art is created through their signs, their graffiti, and even through performance protesting. The art the protestors are creating promote awareness, and inspire people to bring change to the area. They want to get their message across, and they are doing so through art. This tragedy is leading the country to create multiple pieces of art that have meaning.

Week 4: Hong Kong

In the article, Abby Chen states that she believes that some of the finest art will be produced in the wake of this turmoil. She talks about how this traumatic experience has opened her eyes to humanity in a new and deeper way, and has helped her reflect on the true meaning of art. I think this means that during this terrible experience of protesting, it opens people’s eyes to what is really going on. This creates creativity. The protestors use art in creative ways, for example, using graffiti and roadblocks to express themselves, they show what they stand for through these pieces of art. In times of disturbance, confusion, and uncertainty many people turn to creativity to show their feelings, for example through, signs, graffiti, masks, etc. Protestors can get very creative with signs in Hong Kong with drawings and/or sayings with powerful meaning. The power of art in this confrontation is demonstrated through protestors artwork. The art promotes awareness, inspires action, and ultimately to bring change in the area of human rights. Art has the power of sending a message of how one feels and what they stand for. I personally feel as though art is one of the most powerful means of communication. Art is everywhere we look and has so much meaning and can influence people. All of the tragedy occurring in Hong Kong opens people's eyes to see what is really going on. Seeing this kind of tragedy can lead people to creating their best pieces of art, and the most inspiring pieces of art. Through this art, they are standing up for themselves and their hopes for freedom. Their art shows pain, tragedy, and strength. Hong Kong is an extremely interesting place where art will continue to grow. I find this article very interesting and very informative.

Week 3

Painter: Jan Van Eyck

Painted: 1406

Why: I chose this painting because it stood out to me the most I am not sure if it’s the green or the fact that she is pregnant, I feel that the color is subdued it is monotonies throughout the painting then the light shifts when it reaches her it becomes warmer and enlighten a sense of hope is given. The Blue, green, yellow, orange is analogous they are next to one another on the wheel and go from cold to warm which given the right side of the painting a sense of calm and welcoming. On the left side, it is a monochromatic color scheme of browns that gives the left side a feeling of darkness unwelcoming, as well the dog is almost invisible, he blends into the background. This is my favorite painting because the green to me green has a happy relationship for me it makes me smile but, in this painting, I feel that it is meant to show that the couple has money and with his fur coat as well. Their expressions are mute and they don’t seem t have much to say to one another he seems harsh and cold but she seems like she wants to say something but knows that she must keep quiet as though she has a secret, but she is being quieted by him. I feel that this painting is well balanced, it has a quiet movement with the folds in her dress and the folds in his coat, as well as her shoes both pair thought-out the room show a sense of liveliness.

The Arnolfini Portrait is an oil based painting on an oak panel painted by Jan van Eyck. This painting actually depicts marriage between the man and the woman. This painting is a straightforward depiction of a wealthy merchant and his wife. When looking at this painting, I notice the chandelier, the stained glass windows, the mirror, the dog and the oranges which are all signs of wealth during that time period. I find it very interesting that the male in the painting is wearing darker colors that blend in with the rest of the painting, and the woman is more emphasized by the bright colors she is wearing.

The Descent from the Cross was developed during the Northern Renaissance in 1435-1440 by Roger van der Weyden. This dramatic painting shows Jesus being taken down from the cross by three men. The scene shows suffering as all of the figures in the painting bow toward Christ who is the central figure of the scene. The Art Story (2020) states that The Virgin Mary, the mother of Jesus is to the left of Jesus and has fainted as St. John the Evangelist and Mary Salome strive to help her up. This beautiful painting is full of movement, driven by the figures and their emotions. Every face in the painting shows grief and sorrow. Movement is shown through Mary fainting, St. John and Mary helping her, Jesus being taken down from the cross, the young man standing behind the cross on the ladder holding bloody nails in his hand while helping take Jesus down for the cross (The Art Story, 2020). The use of primary colors, and his realistic facial expressions emphasize the movement of the body falling to the earth. The Art Story (2020) says how Van der Weyden ignored anatomical accuracy for both the emotional effect and spatial illusion. This piece of art is discussed in the reading “The 15th Century in Northern Europe: Sacred and Secular Space” where it explains how Weyden excels at creating compositions based on rhyming patterns, and in this painting Wayden composes rhythmic bodies.

I chose this piece of art because I love pieces of art that reflect history and religion. I am Catholic, and find this painting very touching. I can see the sorrow and pain in everyone's eyes, and how it affected the Virgin Mother Mary. So much in this image stands out to me. I grew up learning about the Virgin Mother Mary and the crucifiction of Jesus Christ. The young man behind the cross holding the bloody nails and holding on to Jesus’s arm looks very distressed but him standing above Jesus depicts an angelic presence to me. The skull and arm bone on the ground stand out to me, and they symbolize Golgotha, the place of skulls, where Jesus was crucified. I find this painting very interesting.

The Descent from the Cross is associated with many traits from the Northern Renaissance. The Northern Renaissance was famous for its advanced oil painting techniques, realistic, expressive altarpiece art, on wooden panel paintings, as well as woodcuts. Visual Arts states that Weyden selected the best Baltic oak to make the wooden panel, and spread the surface with gold as well as the finest lapis-lazuli, one of the most expensive of all colour pigments. This painting also associates with the trait of realistic and expressive art. This scene is very realistic and shows sorrow and suffering in the figures facial expressions.

Art History: Week 2

I feel as though Apple products and iPhones have impacted our world today in many different ways. The first iPhone created by Apple was released in 2007, and they have been constantly growing by creating multiple new iPhones over the years. The iPhone was unlike anything that had come before it, and would change phones, technology, and communication forever. The iPhone is a mobile phone, music player, and camera that can contain multiple apps. iPhones have changed the way the world is today through constant communication, relationship, and different types of apps. The most common apps utilized are instagram, snapchat, facebook, and youtube. Through these apps we can be connected with friends, family, people you strive to be like, and people who want to be like you. People are always connected. The world now revolves around social media. People rely on their phones to communicate with one another. There is much less face to face communication which can affect younger people as they grow older and have to learn to communicate for future jobs. When people go out to eat, many people snap a quick picture of their meal and can post it to instagram, snapchat, or even facebook. People like to post on social media their accomplishments, happy moments in life, and even sad times. People post on these social media websites to get attention from others. We are in constant contact with the rest of the world, and iPhones have opened this up to us. Over the years the iPhone has grown bigger and gotten slimmer with faster internet access over the years. The iPhone has changed people’s values over the years. Many people value how many likes they get on a picture, or how many views they get on a video. People don’t really value their own privacy anymore by posting most of their life on their iPhones to one or more of these apps. They have changed society today in a lot of positive ways. One being for emergencies, and being able to receive news quicker than in the past. For example, the outbreak and spread of the coronavirus. Through social media on the iPhone the United States was able to spread this information very quickly, and start screening for the virus at multiple airports throughout the US. This helps the US by trying to control the spread of the virus and for people to take precautions. The iPhone has allowed us to get alerts straight to our phones wherever you are, such as weather alerts, cancellations, etc. The iPhone is very convenient in many ways. I feel like the iPhone will impact our future greatly by advancing technology further. iPhones are being introduced to children at a younger age which has its pros and cons. Pros being that if there is an emergency the child would be able to call 911. There are multiple cons to younger children having iPhones due to early constant internet access such as social and emotional development. The younger generations are more attached to their phones and rely through social media to contact with one another. Younger generations don’t always understand that they may not be communicating with the person they think they are. Parents can’t constantly monitor their younger children while they are on their phones. This is how the iPhone has impacted our world and will continue to impact the world.

Starry Night by Vincent Van Gogh has been one of my favorite pieces of art since I was young. To me, this painting is very eye appealing. It includes a beautiful landscape with a village and a starry night of blues that are well blended and given a look of much texture and movement. The dark sky is behind a bright yellow moon and stars. Van Gogh was mainly self taught, which I find intriguing.
