About Professor Don Norman:

Donald Arthur Norman is an American researcher, professor, and author. Norman is the director of The Design Lab at University of California, San Diego. He is best known for his books on design, especially The Design of Everyday Things. He is known also know for Cognitive ergonomics, and User-centred design. His many books are translated in 20 languages, including Design of Everyday Things and Living with Complexity.

Why this Topic:

I choose the topic Design for a Better World: Meaningful, Sustainable, Humanity Centred because it addresses the impact that design should have on society.

Don Norman highlight that we live in a complex socio technological world, where most of what we see is artificial. This artificial environment can beneficial in many ways, but also comes with drawbacks. He also mentioned we are measuring things that we cannot measured. By giving example, diamond is harder or any mental. There is no need to calculate everything.

Don Norman’s said, “We live a deformed version of capitalism.” I strongly agree with this because in today’s world we often priorities profits over people and the environment. This book challenges us to think again about how we approaches our problems. Instead of just improving product or technology, our goal should be to create a system that contributes to the well-being of the planet and future.

The book is not simply about design principles but its about how design can truly make a difference in the world. Norman also says we should know our history and learn from it. Learning from past mistakes or successes, we can go on right track in today’s challenges.

This approach is very important for someone who is pursuing a career in digital design. It encourages designers as well as other people to move beyond. I believe that by adopting this mindset, we can contribute to creating a more sustainable and human world using design as a tool for positive change.

I was drawn to this image because it perfectly captures the clam atmosphere of a sunset. The warm, fading light, and reflections in the water symbolise balance and serenity. It reminds me to take a moment to appreciate the beauty around.

This is our Photo Studio’s Logo. This design holds a deep, personal significance for me, as it mirrors the journey of my grandfather, who started a photography business from nothing.

The circle representing ‘ZERO’ shows his humble beginnings, where he had no resources or foundation to begin with. Yet through his vision and determination he created an entire world, not just a business, but a legacy for our family. The ‘V’ symbolizing ‘Vishwa’ (the World), represents the world my grandfather built for us. The letter ‘V’ breaks out from the void of the circle. 

The studio is not just a source of livelihood but also a space of creativity, where moments are captured.
