“Have you ever felt like you don’t belong in your own body?
For a long time I’ve felt uncomfortable in my body. My hips were too wide, my breasts uncomfortable, and my hair was always too long, even after I cut it to my shoulders.
For years, I’ve questioned who I actually was.
I never liked the toys girls played with or the strange and revealing clothes they wore. Sure I’d sometimes where dresses, but that was only because my religious family forced me to. They taught me to "act like a lady”. Like I knew what that was at the time.
After a while, I realised I was different to other girls. As they grew older, they wore skirts, tank tops and short shorts to show off their body. When I didn’t “keep up with the latest trends”, the other girls began to ghost me, treating me like an outcast. I guess in their eyes I was. “
I walked through Hexside halls, my hoodie pulled over my head. Many of the students murmured on my outfit. Baggy pants with a zipped up hoodie and sneakers. Yet none dared speak up. I lowered my head, trying my best to ignore the comments. But it still stung every time they made a comment about my appearance, and how it was "unladylike”.
Hearing someone yell my name, I barely had enough time to brace myself when a bundle of joy tackled me into a hug. “D/N! Where have you been?! How’ve you been?!” The figure gasped. “Were you on vacation without me?!”
Taking a step back, I realised it was Luz, one of my best friends and my crush. I smiled and chuckled a little at Luz’s childlike behaviour. “No, just went on a retreat with my mother and father.” I stated, giving Luz a hug. “Sorry I couldn’t text. They kinda banned me from taking my phone.”
Luz shrugged. “All is good, bestie! COME! LET US FIND THE GANG TOGETHER!” She exclaimed, and began to drag me toward her locker. I laughed at her childishness.
Luz and I walked by Boscha and her gang. With a smirk, Boscha turned to her friends. “Look, if it isn’t round-ears and the tramp!” She said loud enough for the both of us to hear. Boscha and her friends snickered, passing by. Luz stopped for a minute, glaring at the school bully. “Why that little-” Before Luz could chase after her, however, I butted in. “It’s fine, Luz! I kinda like the nickname?” I smiled awkwardly. I knew how reckless Luz could be at times, and I didn’t want anything bad to happen to the human.
After giving me a weird look, Luz shrugged, holding my hand as we walked toward the lockers. I blushed a bit, but controlled myself.
Gus, Willow and Amity were waiting at the lockers. Luz ran up to them, giving them all a big hug joyously. I smiled warmly, watching the joyous girl saying hi to her friends. If only you knew how much I cared for you, Luz.
The school day passed quickly, and the gang and I were walking home together. Apparently, the others had been talking about a sleepover at the Owl House.
“It’s gonna be so cool! I haven’t had anyone come for a sleepover in so long!” Luz squealed. I chuckled, looking down at the ground dreamily. Maybe it would be fun. Watching movies on Luz’s phone, playing board games-
“Sorry Luz, but I can’t come tonight. My mum and dad want me to perform tonight.” Amity butted in. I looked up sadly at the teen witch. She was looking down gloomily, probably feeling bad about the inconvenience. Oh, well, that’s alright. At least we still had Willow and Gus-
“And I have to study for the test tomorrow. My dads wouldn’t be too happy if I failed this test…” Willow? Ok, we still had Gus-
At that moment, a bird came down from the sky, landing on Gus’ shoulder. It began to speak. “Augustus! You’re grounded for 2 weeks! You are to come back home right NOW!” With that, it left. Gus stared up at the bird in disbelief. “What did I do?! Surely they couldn’t have found out about that prank I pulled on Bump the other day, right?!”
Everyone was silent, looking at Gus in disappointment. “WHAT?!”
Luz looked down at the ground sadly. My heart broke at her upset expression. I pursed my lips. I couldn’t just leave Luz hanging like this. “I’m still coming Luz!” I said a loud. Luz’s eyes brightened as they landed on mine. She tackled me in a hug. “OH THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!” She shrieked excitedly. I blushed as I hugged her back. The other witches were giving Luz and I smirks, elbowing each other knowingly. My face turned even redder.
Pulling back, we kept walking. Man, how was I gonna get to the Owl house without my parents knowing?
“No! I’m not gonna cover for you! Find your own damn way to sneak out!” My older brother, B/N, growled out, turning his gaze back to Penstagram. I groaned. “Please? I can’t let my friend down! I’ll let you have my savings!” His ears perked up at this. “…Alright. But it better be a good amount.” He replied.
At that moment, I heard my mother calling my name. “D/N! Come try on this new dress I found for you!”
I grimaced at the sound of my own name. It sounded so…flowery. I hated it. And dresses? I’d already asked her not to get any. Skirts were enough, weren’t they?
Begrudgingly, I walked down stairs to see what my mother so insisted on me wearing.
It was around 6pm. I had to leave now, while my parents were distracted doing their ritual. Grabbing my bag for tonight, I snuck pass their room. Hopefully, B/N will uphold his end of the deal.
The floorboards creaked under my feet. I paused, holding my breath. Did they hear that? The sound of their chants never ceased.
Letting out my breath, I opened the door quietly, closing it behind me as I stepped out into the evening air. Running into the woods, I almost cheered out loud in victory.
I stepped onto the Owl house porch. Not gonna lie, I was a little nervous about spending the afternoon with my crush. As I was about to knock on the door, something shoved itself into my face, shouting “HOOT HOOT! VISITORS!” I screamed as I punched the thing. It let out a cry of pain. “OW! GEEZ, YOU DIDN’T HAVE TO BE SO MEAN ABOUT IT!” It cried. I rubbed the back of my neck awkwardly, as I surveyed the creature. It looked like some sort of owl, but it was connected to the house door. I felt bad for hurting him. “Uh…sorry man. Didn’t see you there…” I mumbled out. The owl laughed. “WELL, AT LEAST YOU SAID SORRY! I’M HOOTY, WHAT’S YOUR NAME?” “Hooty” greeted. I grinned, before pausing. Did I want to tell it my actual name?
Before I could answer, however, the door opened. There stood a tall witch, with grey bushy hair and amber eyes. She was sipping something from a mug as she looked down at me in confusion. “Do I know you?”
“Oh, hi Eda! Um, yeah, I believe you do?” I questioned. I had met Eda before. Did she have an accident?
Luz came to the door, eyes bright with excitement. “D/N! Eda! You remember D/N, right? Come in!” She ushered. Eda was just as confused as ever, so was I. “Oh don’t mind her she just woke up from her nap! She’s always like this. She’ll remember you in a minute!” Luz explained. I guess that was understandable?
Luz lead me to her room. On the bed sat a little weird creature, sleeping peacefully. It wore a large skull and red collar, with a little crown placed gently next to it. Luz walked quietly up to the creature. “King, wakey wakey!” She gently shook the demon, as it mumbled in its sleep. “Hnnnng five more minutes….” He groaned. I chuckled at how weirdly adorable he was.
At the sound of my voice, he abruptly sat up, staring at me in surprise. “Luz, what is that?!” He pointed accusingly at me. Luz giggled, introducing us. The demon’s name was King, which suited his personality.
Luz and I talked for hours, late into the night. We watched “yoo-tube” as Luz called it, and “net-flicks”. Strange names, but who was I to judge?
“Ok ok. Coffee, or hot-chocolate?” Luz asked. I thought for a moment. “Hmm…I guess coffee. Alright, my turn. Cats or dogs?” I asked. Luz giggled, hugging King. ‘Demons! But if I had to choose between those two, then a cat.“ I laughed.
"Ooh! Dresses or skirts?” Luz asked excitedly. My smiled disappeared as I recalled the events with my mother this evening. All was quiet for a minute. “Wow, didn’t think I’d hit a sore spot there.” Luz awkwardly laughed. I laughed too, but it was forced.
“Hey, what’s wrong?” Luz asked, placing a hand on my shoulder. I glanced up at her and sighed. “Do you…ever feel weird about your gender?” I asked. Luz tilted her head questioningly. I hastily continued. “I mean, are you ever confused with your gender? I feel like I’m trapped in my own body, somehow. I don’t feel like…a girl.” I finished, looking down in embarrassment. Luz’s face turned to that of recognition, as she smiled warmly at me. “So you think you’re trans?” She asked. I didn’t understand her question. “What’s trans?” I asked. “Oh, that’s right.” She giggled. “Well, a trans person is someone who feels like they were born with the wrong gender. Like you.” She explained. I tilted my head in amazement. There were others that felt the same way?
Luz then did the unexpected.
She hugged me in a tight embrace. I never expected her to react that way. “Y-you think it’s normal?” I asked, hugging her back in confusion.
“Finding out who you are is normal, D/N! Or would you like to change your name around us?” I pulled back. “You can change your name?” Luz nodded. “Well, kinda. In my world you gotta go through this tough process. Not sure what you’d have to do here, though.”
My mind was buzzing with this new information. Luz shook my shoulder, bringing my attention back to her. “So do you feel like a guy? Or non-binary??” She asks excitedly. She gasped. “We gotta choose a good name that suites you! We could go with Zach, or Damien. Ooh! How about James!” I laughed.
Pausing for a minute, I hesitantly said, “How about…Y/N?” Luz gasped once more, shaking my arm. “YES! It’s amazing! Just wait till the gang hear about this-all with your permission, of course-”
My grin was as wide as ever. I didn’t even realise how close to Luz I truly was until I felt a light peck on my cheek. My eyes widened when I realised Luz had just kissed me. “Did you just kiss me?” Luz realised what she’d just done, and her face turned red as she began to stutter. “I-I’m sorry! My bad! Got caught up in the excitement and-”
She was cut off as our lips met. After a few seconds I pulled away. “Thanks, Luz.” I whispered, smiling as I rubbed the back of my neck.
Luz placed her hand on mine. “No problem, Y/N.” She whispered back.
A/N: Sorry it’s a little fast paced. Or inaccurate in anyway. Hope I did alright?
Edit: I changed it from “trans name” to “your name”.
