Artist’s statement - Why do we make art / a self portrait
My art is so often inspired by the small things around me that either create a new memory or remind me of another- I collect and carry as a result of this, I always have. I wanted this project to be an “actually, that receipt in my bag means something to me emotionally” moment, a self portrait of the museum of my life as a representation of me.
I absolutely adore the theme and I made some of my favourite work this project- that being said, I definitely could have done more and have ideas I would like to carry forward; collages of paint scraps, more work in chalk pastel, even larger scale paintings and more sketches and experimentations. I also wish I did more paintings of singular objects like the perfume bottle, perhaps receipts, vapes (I do not encourage but there are so many dead ones in my bag whew) and other mundane objects. I also really enjoy the idea of painting in lipstick like I did in the very beginning, but I don’t own any that I’m willing to ruin (but I may in the future!)
Artists I researched-
Angel Otero
Lirika Matoshi
Diana Copperwhite
What was most successful- the magpie, perfume, my last life drawings of Jeff, The Mess Book (I like the experimanting with different materials and the narriative created, even if it could have been a little longer)
What wasn’t my favourite- the key painting, palette knife painting, earlier life drawings, the tote bag (I love the whole concept but it felt rushed and I wish I could have put more in)
Overall the project was a little difficult for me because my health hasn’t been great throughout and honestly I'm a little dissapointed with the number of works I produced but that being said, I'm happy about the quality of the ones I did make- I learned so much not just throughout this project but throughout the year as a whole and I’m so grateful for the year I have spent :)
