It’s 10 year olds arguing over who gets to play the princess and who gets to play the knight and when their parents ask why don’t they both be princesses neither Sakura or Ino wants to answer “because princesses only get to kiss their rescuer, but not each other.” It’s playing spin the bottle as a joke with just the two of them in the midafternoon with a fort of blankets pitched above their heads. They stay hidden away as they lean forward, eyes closed and fist clenched tight, and they want to giggle, but their breath is caught.

It’s flirting in class during middle school, but only in the way that is seen as cute and sociable. Fixing each others bra strap and offering each other the chewed gum from her mouth but saying its okay because they’re like sisters so it doesn’t count.

It’s Sakura chewing that gum and working her teeth and tongue around the pink wad trying to taste something other the the sugar trying to taste something so much sweeter.

They make out at sleepovers to practice kissing boys, but the moment a guy tries to feel Sakura up in the front seat of her new used car he’s dumped without ceremony or explanation. It’s going skinny dipping in the lake near Sakura’s house and Sakura pretending not to look as Ino pretends that she isn’t trying to catch her eye.

They ask their guy friends if they’re hot while feeling each other up on the couch of some party and it’s funny for a second and then really hot for a minute and then gut twisting nauseating the moment a wolfwhistle fires from the kitchen.

It’s leaving yelling and spitting and instead making out in the back of Sakura’s car six blocks away. It’s laughing and mumbling “I’m so drunk” in the crook of Ino’s neck and her giggling back “same” even though there’s no taste of alcohol on either’s tongue. 

But there is bubblegum and lipgloss and softness and want. 

There’s so much want.
