Two beautiful herons captured by Naturalist Erica Lemon at LeRoy Oakes Forest Preserve in St. Charles
"The first view of an Illinois Prairie is Sublime," wrote a traveler in 1834. "I may almost say awfully Grand ... The more I travel over them the better I like them. There is a great variety of Flowers now on the Prairies, but they tell me in a month from this time they will be much prettier." These words ring true today in our restored natural areas, such as the prairie at Muirhead Springs Forest Preserve.

Painted turtle at Burnidge Forest Preserve
What a catch! This proud fisher caught her fish at the Forest Preserve District's 4th annual Hooked on Fishing at Lake Patterson in Oakhurst F.P. in Aurora.
Moths often play second fiddle to butterflies, but check out these cool species found at LeRoy Oakes Forest Preserve. The white tiger moth is often described as "immaculate" because of its pure coloration. The yellow-collared scape moth frequents flowers at the forest edge during spring and summer.
One Kane County resident takes a nice walk along a creek in one of our forest preserves.
