For Rey - Salem is family. Her ward to protect, though she doesn’t do much protecting. And thank the Father for that. Rey is too aware of her deficiencies, her youthful status among her siblings.
“Oh, I like the library.” That perks the angel up considerably, spending time amongst the creative works of the humans. “It’s an honest question!” She sighs, shoulders slumping a little. “I don’t have my pocketbook.”
Salem couldn’t help but giggle at her companion’s obvious enthusiasm for human things. While she never questioned what Rey’s home was like she always did formulate ideas by the reactionary guardian. The walk to the bus stop was short, it always did make for a quick trip when she had the presence of someone else.
❝No need, it’s my treat. You’ve been a good friend. I thought you would like to get something. It’s not like I knew you were coming to begin with. I would have had a welcoming party if there was a letter first.❞ Of course Salem was intentionally poking at the lack of warning for any Guardian Angels arrival. She never knew about them until Rey’s arrival at her own home.
❝We’ll grab some stuff for a movie night while we’re out for a small party.❞
hailtheascendant:
The professor’s cheeks pink up a touch, a happy color, a beacon to say the compliment had hit home. She often got overlooked, ‘the young art professor’ and after the sabbatical, it isn’t any better. It is nice to be appreciated for a moment. Even by a student.
Her laptop boots up quietly, running through its usual processes. “I highly recommend you go to Europe to see all the art they have squirreled away there. It is truly awe inspiring to see how creative as a species we’ve always been.” Diana does her best to reign in her enthusiasm. She, however, adores the subject matter at hand and nothing can mask that from her face.
“The Louvre and the Winter Palace, they make you yearn to see days long past.”
“Do you prefer chocolate, cinnamon, or fruit?” It might seem odd to be so thorough in asking someone about their preferences when it’s just a thank you, but Diana firmly believes in not wasting her money. If she buys the pastry, Salem had best at least enjoy it or it’s all pointless.
Salem could not help but beam at her own Professor’s attempt to obscure her excitement. While she did not mind as a student to watch people get excited about a topic one thoroughly enjoys, she was capable of understanding when someone might prefer to keep up appearances. Thus, she refrained from teasing as she would do to many of her friends on the campus.
As she continued to silently work on her project, she also listened intently to the other woman’s words with visible interest. The occasional peek from behind her laptop at the Diana. Salem casually flashed a smile, a small chuckle sounding from her at the question.
❝Fruit, preferably. But they are all fine, in my opinion.❞ She gently rests her cheeks against her knuckles as she jotted down notes. ❝The idea of visiting the Winter Palace sounds lovely. I’ve heard and read many things about it but I’ve never had the opportunity to visit myself.❞
❝They say that grand balls used to be held there. The the lights make everything glimmer, almost as if you are in a dream.❞ The corner of her lips twitched upward. ❝Well, as I’ve heard from other’s descriptions.❞
hailtheascendant:
Annoyance curls in the vampire’s gut, he has been nothing but cordial to this would be, pretender of a predator of his kind. He has no doubt she’s got some skill but she offends a potential ally out of hand. Throws away opportunity without so much as looking through the door. Sets alight a bridge she has yet to cross. He is annoyed most assuredly by the young one’s dismissal.
Yet, he remains cordial, a mark of his age no doubt. with a courtly bow, he even bears the back of his neck to her for a long and silent moment. She may want nothing of his company tonight, but he will change her mind. He needs time. This one will be one of his, come hell or high water.
“As the lady doth wish, so I do. Though, I will not be meeting my end tonight, nor any other. But I will leave you be, as you so rudely demand. May your night be a safe one, my lady.” There’s nothing to betray the way he wishes to rattle her brain about in her skull. Nothing to betray the way he wishes to bend her will to his and force her to respect him.
Better to earn it. Better to twist her to him and his, to the decadence of the night. Without a sound, Solas walks into the shadow. He will see her again.
Her gaze flickered briefly to watch him; he got her damn nerves and she didn’t even know him. She couldn’t help but click her tongue in dismay as she pulled her hood up. ❝And do try to drop your act, Romeo.❞ She remarked as she watched him retreat into the darkness. Salem lingered momentarily, simply staring in the direction he had left.
Once more left to her own devices; a sigh passed through her lips as she gingerly brushed her fingertips down the side of her face. Salem seemed to find herself in many bizarre situations recently. It was worth taking a night off, an idea she gave only a second to think about. While he did manage to pique her interest, Salem appreciated the breath of air. Men made her nervous, dead or not; undead, in this case.
Her hand covered her mouth, an inched left between her lips and her palm. Another sigh against her skin as she calmed her racing heart. Anxiety drove her nuts, perhaps this is why she chose her career. Any excuse to avoid conversation pleased her. She turned away from where he had left and went back to her work for the night.
Hours passed and daylight was soon to rise. Salem curled her legs against her chest as she leaned her head back on a bench. She found time to relax near the hours of sunrise; most vampires retreated at this time. But this also gave her time to think and her mind always wandered back to the creature from earlier. A refusal to treat it with respect, she found that she would always refer to it as anything but man.
❝How droll,❞ she mused quietly, rolling her shoulders back.
hailtheascendant:
Good manners she says. The sprite may be pretty to look at but she is naive and has to learn not everyone is kind and good. Not even Diana can claim such. Not with the temper she has acquired over the years.
“You play a child’s game. I don’t much care what your name is.” Her eyes had followed the red-tinted blonde all through her journey down the stairs. She’s gone through a cigarette and puts another to her lips, flicking open the lighter. “My name is Diana. Is your curiosity satisfied now?”
She speaks between puffs to start the cigarette cherry. Her eyes flick to the young woman and then away dismissively. Where is Charlie and where is his grandson? More importantly of all places why did they request to meet here?
She prays the other woman takes the dismissal for what it is.
Salem offers nothing short of a smile as her head tilts, curiouser and curiouser.
❝Well if you don’t care for my name then I will not tell it.❞ While she had a name, there was more than just one frivolous question in her head. Salem had the audacity to question this Diana more.
❝Why are you here? This neighborhood doesn’t exactly cater to frondeur like people.❞ While Salem regularly enjoyed riling people up, she found it more entertaining when the person tried to disengage the woman’s intrusive behavior. She seemed to hum happily at the idea of causing irritation to the other, living in such a high society got boring. Rarely did she have the time to be scandalous and socialize with people considered part of the lower chain.
❝Tell me, Diana, do you live nearby?❞

“I’m learning, Salem!” She protests in a good natured way smiling still when she is booped on the nose. She doesn’t really understand what the fuss is. More angels, more Guardians were clumsier than her. Or they had been ages and ages ago when they first started out.
Rey figures she’s allowed to be silly and clumsy so long as it doesn’t hurt her charge.
The Guardian ambles along beside her ward, idly looking around them as they walk for the bus. The indignant snort that comes from her is anything but angel-like. “I have never tripped over a trash can. Those things are huge! Couldn’t miss one if you were in pitch darkness.”
“Where are we riding to on the bus anyway? Oh, do you have the bus cards?”
Salem couldn’t help but shake her head, eyebrows knit together faintly, she smiled just a bit. They were an odd pair to watch and were certainly far off from the protector-ward relationship. They acted more like family or friends which did not come across as a problem for her.
Salem never enjoyed having people as it was, so it felt comfortable to view Rey as something other than a Guardian. However, she always remained aware of the fact. While the walk to the bus stop was not very long, Salem always found it hard to keep herself entertained. They company of someone else did not go underappreciated.
❝To the city; I need to go to the library and some stores.❞ She responded, a yawn pulling at the corner of her mouth.❝Of course, I have the bus cards. And even if I didn’t we can still pay cash.❞
❝We won’t be out long hopefully. And we can stop somewhere for lunch while we are there.❞
back from vacation, going to take today to decompress and then i’ll get back to replying to threads.

“One would have hoped the planners would have thought about the volume of students near the center of campus. Especially one staffed by the culinary track” The professor murmurs in return, plugging in her laptop before sitting down across from Salem. There is a moment when she really realizes how strange it is to be sitting with a student casually.
Oh well. The fact of the matter is she needed the outlet and Salem has been kind enough to let her know there had been a free one. Small talk with a student isn’t frowned upon. Interactions of an academic nature are encouraged.
“Ah, I am not, actually. I am focusing on a research paper focusing on my last trip to France. I observed and was fortunate to assist in a restoration project. It was glorious.” Her lips curve into a pleasant smile, recalling the sabbatical she’d taken for the opportunity.
Diana speaks as she sets up her laptop and settles into the seat across from Salem. She could do with a drink, something cool, oh she can smell the sweet cheese Danish coming out of the oven. She loves this cafe for that reason alone. A work study opportunity and credit for the students all at once while the rest of them reap delicious benefits.
“Care for pastry? I stole part of your table, the least I can do is return the kindness.”
It always pleased Salem to observe someone talk about their passions, such a youthful expression always overtook the other’s features. It was a grand sight —– while she knew that Diana was not very old, the expression never changed on people. Salem carefully crossed her ankles behind the bar of her seat as she picked up her pen and scribbled notes into her workbook.
❝That sounds marvelous, the project must be a remarkable sight if it had you working as part of the team.❞ She admired her teacher and the work she did; it was one of the reasons she strives to accomplish so much in her own assignments.
Her attention flickered between her own laptop and her writing as she pressed her lips into the palm of her hand, attempting to concentrate on the multiple distractions. While she was able to multitask her work, socializing was something of a task for her. ❝Perhaps I will visit France one day to see it for myself.❞
It was more a mumble to herself, quietly voicing her thoughts out loud between the hushed clicks of her mouse pad.
Her attention snapped back to Diana at the question, her head tilting briefly as she attempted to process the question. ❝Oh, yes. A pastry.❞
❝That sounds good but I would feel terrible to have my teacher pay for something of mine.❞
hit that good ol’ ♥ for a starter.
hailtheascendant:
Diana was waiting rather impatiently for Charlie’s grandson to come meet her. It would be the first time in years she’s seen the man, and old as he is - it’ll be a wonder if he remembers her. She’s nervous, and easily irritated today. Illustrated by the cigarette currently being pulled from.
Usually, Diana doesn’t go near the disgusting things, but here she is. Her heel taps against the ground and then, a voice filters into her consciousness. Well, that’d be her. Diana blows smoke through her nose, a good visual representation of her irritation.
“Why?” The question isn’t posed particularly pleasantly, and her head tilts back to look up to see who’s speaking.
❝Well, I am curious and I believe it is considered good manners to tell someone your name,❞
Strawberry hair fell forward as she leaned up on her tip toes to get a better view. Salem crinkled her nose at the smoke as she elegantly waved her to hand to drive it away from floating into her face. She detested the idea of being near a smoker; curiosity drove her feet to carry her down the metal stairwell. With every floor, she quickly peered over the railing to make sure the woman had not moved.
❝If you tell me your name; I will tell you mine,❞ she peered around the corner of a pole, on the second floor of the outdoor stairwell. It seemed like a fair trade. It would certainly sate the woman's interest momentarily. Salem is used to pushing at people to get answers. She purposely ignored the fact that she may be irritating the woman more so than she already was. It took more than smoke and hostility to drive Salem's intrusiveness away.
Thus she found herself on the first floor of the metal stairway, leaning over the railing once more as she gently set her chin on the palm of her hand.
❝So, what is it?❞
hailtheascendant:
Ah, but he is not so stupid as to rely upon a Hunter’s supposed lack of aptitude. He has survived enough to know if they survived their training, they will survive the younger of his people. Few will survive him. Fewer still catch his interest.
His hand lifts, pressing to his chest through his waist coat and shirt. The vampire gives a half bow to her. She is something, so defensive, so bitter. She doesn’t even know if he is a villain for sure yet. He’d not attacked nor given an indication of wanting to. Why are mortals so terribly judgemental.
“You wound me, my lady. I give no empty words nor do I pretend to be that which I am not. I am what I am, no more, and no less. It is you, I think, who pretends to be that which she is not.” He speaks genially as he rights himself, moving out of her line of sight slowly, throwing his sound in the opposite direction.
“If I wanted you dead, little one, you would be. Perhaps it would be more prudent to converse rather than do battle. I have no interest in snapping your neck tonight.”
She found his words to be nothing more than an annoyance. When staring down the barrel of a shotgun or facing a vampire; it was no different for her. ❝If you do not intend to kill me. May I suggest you crawl back to the hole you came from. I have a job to do and cannot waste such precious moments of my time to entertain you.❞ Salem snapped in such a bitter and spiteful manner. She remained aware that the creatures are not incompetent beings. They could tell the difference between a hunter and regular civilian. She could not help but feel this was all intentional. It made her bristle to have her time wasted. While death stalks the streets, she was stuck being circled by a predator who wanted a good laugh. Her jaw seemed to tighten. She spent a small portion of her time to relax her muscles, breathing in slowly. While she didn't feel the need to consider him a threat, she wasn't going to take chances. It frustrated to no end, nonetheless. With that, she slipped her hands up and pulled the hood of her cloak over her. ❝Find another human to harass. I have better things to do than play with a monster.❞ She remained detached and cold with her words, briefly glancing over her shoulder as she pulled her cloak around her. ❝Or better yet, walk into someone's gun. There is nothing to converse about between us.❞
hailtheascendant:
Diana allows the other woman to take her hand, squeezing it gently a sad smile on her lips as she looks at Salem. Though the woman is a stranger, Diana still allows women closer to her more often than she ever will men. They’ve proven to be untrustworthy over the years, each of them held to standards they cannot hope to meet because they are not her dearest friends or her love from the war.
“It did, yes. His soul is carried with me, and I - I try to be worthy of the love he freely gave me.” She is remarkably composed for talking about Steve, remembering with perfect clarity the pain and the rage she’d felt.
“That is a wonderful tradition. I would like that, I think he might have found it silly, but in the end he would have accepted it.”
She could empathize, understand and feel the pain that the other felt from loss. Salem did her best to offer something close to comfort. Eyebrows arched slightly as she watched the other woman, seemingly impressed with her composure and choice to show such little emotion on her face. Nevertheless, it was not hard to read when the event’s have scarred someone’s heart.
❝You live today, no? I am sure that is all he wanted when he chose to go.❞
❝I find the tradition rather strange myself but it is a good way to honor someone’s memory. Better than a stone that will decay over the years.❞ She remarked, gently setting her hand on top of the other’s in a soothing manner, hoping to offer some grounding.
hailtheascendant:
“Hey now, I am the epitome of grace and poise!” The angel fires back at her charge, a wide grin on her face. That had been fantastic. Sure, had she been mortal that would have probably been painful as all get out, but she’s not. It’s kind of great. Rey happily takes Salem’s hand, and just keeps holding it. Why shouldn’t they hold hands? They are friends, closer than friends to Rey’s mind. Guardian and Ward, an odd pair to be sure but that’s that. Mind you, Rey is a young angel, Salem is her first ward, so it’s not surprising the ward is doing more guarding than the angel.
“Probably. It would happen less if you let me keep my wings out. They’re pretty, the perfect suncatchers!”
❝You have been nothing but clumsy. I think you’ve acquired more injuries than I that is to say if you could be injured.❞ Despite her prodding at her companion, she thoroughly enjoyed the time spent with her guardian —– even if she was watching over her angel.
❝And you know I can’t take you into the city with your wings out. You’ll end up smacking people who can’t see them.❞ Salem took on the tone of a scolding mother as she lifted a hand to gently boop the tip of Rey’s nose with a playful smile tugging at the corner of her lips. The female didn’t mind the hand holding, if anything it made it easier to keep tabs on the other.
With a gentle tug to usher Rey into following her, she briefly glanced back. ❝Now hurry before we miss the bus. I’m not walking five miles because you trip over a trashcan or something.❞
hailtheascendant:
Diana keeps her lips pressed together, face showing displeasure as she looks about for a table that will work. If she’d just charged her notebook prior to leaving the office, this would not be an issue. Alas, she’d been so scatter brained this afternoon that hadn’t happened. One wouldn’t think teaching classical period art would be that stressful or require as much attention, but it truly does. Enough that Diana is sure she’s going to pull her hair out if she doesn’t go over this next lesson plan when she hears someone calling to her.
It’s the first time she’s been called “Ms.Diana” since her student teaching days.
The brunette turns, eyes sliding across the cafe to land on Salem. She blinks, registering that the young woman is one of her students. One of the better ones if memory serves her. The idea of sharing a table with her is a bit of a risk, but at the same time, it’s not. It could be counted as office hours.
Nodding to herself, the Professor makes her way to the table. When she’s close enough to speak without raising her voice she favors the other woman with a smile. “Thank you, I was about to give up.”
❝For a school cafe, it is not known to be equipped for study or work. Which is a shame as it is a very quaint place to sit down.❞ She paused, offering a small smile. ❝I find it to be charming as it is very small.❞
Salem attempted to hide the chills she received from jitters of being in the presence of her professor. Though she adored working in Diana’s class it was the restlessness of being a student once more that always caught her confidence in a web. Being an adult never signified much; she reverted back to kindergarten behavior in front of her peers.
❝Are you here to work on the curriculum for the next class?❞
Hiding behind the screen of her own laptop, she took in a silent breath to steady herself. Nerves were already shot from the project as her fingers casually flipped the pen in her hand. Blue eyes flickered from the screen to Diana’s face as she placed her chin in the palm of her free hand.
hailtheascendant:
She’s something of an anomaly, this little huntress. He’s seen so many of them roaming the streets of this city. He’d seen them when it was little more than five houses and a church. But she’s different, with weapons that do not belong in this era of aether and steam. Her cloak is so bright - it is very much as if she is asking to be attacked.
He scoffs, following her from above, as he has been for quite a while now. Just to see, to know what she will do, he throws the sound of his footsteps, casually coming to the edge of a roof three from where she currently stands. His eyesight as a man had been excellent, and now it is superb, even for being as aged as he is.
Solas almost laughs when she calls out into the darkness. Mortals, their first instinct seemingly always to telegraph their position in darkness. Darkness or near darkness. Solas wonders how long she has been a hunter, is she young, or has she become an old maid as the contemporaries like to label women who forge their own paths without husbands or children.
It’s effortless to move fast enough her eyes would never trace it, the sound of his movements swallowed in the shadows. He pauses as she tells the world what she is doing, and can’t help a chuckle this time. He steps from the shadows to her left, slowly, so as not to startle her.
“Should a young lady be out so late unescorted? And so armed, what a - fascinating - sight you make, my lady.”
That would be the second choice, she determined. It almost baffled her when such creatures decided to be so cocky as to walk up next to her. Surely, they did not believe she was such an inept huntress just because of her ridiculous tactics. Although every night she found herself amazed that one would approach her; reasonably it could be the security they felt with shadows covering every corner.
Salem did not mind being the one at a disadvantage with her lack of vision. She would prefer to rely on her hearing when it came to supernatural beings. The woman was not naive, she would never track movements with her eyes.
Her fingers gingerly curled tighter around her weapons. A brief glance over her shoulder; her eyes remained locked onto the stone wall rather than the man behind her. Salem appreciated how silky every being’s voice sounded to the ears of humans. It made the execution a pleasant experience for the small female.
This particular one caused a feeling of trepidation to settle on her. Her jaw seemed to tighten at his words, she loathed them. Salem would never be able to comprehend the fake charisma that men, let alone these creatures, try to show her. She exhaled sharply, attempting not to show too much disappointment in the failed attempted at courtly behavior.
❝Why are all of you so dull? Have you not aged with the century or do you simply enjoy your last moments of pretending to be something close to human?❞ Though she came off as bitter she could not help but be acerbic towards them.
My lady.
That remark alone almost made her feel sorry for the deplorable excuse of a man. ❝Nor is it any business of a vampire what a woman does in her own time. You should find one of your own kind to flatter before you die.❞
