I won't tell anyone they have to shut off any positve feelings they have regarding the Harry Potter series. I know for me personally they brought me comfort all my life and despite their many many many issues and my deep and burning hatred for JKR, I still find comfort in them. I consider them as belonging to any fan who wants them, and not to her.
HOWEVER -----
There is absolutely no way to give financial support to this franchise without giving money directly to JK Rowling. When you pay money for the new movies, games, books, whatever, you are putting money directly into her pocket. And when she uses her money and influence and platform to harm the trans community, there is no way to seperate yourself from that. There just isn't.
Whatever books and merch you already own, I see no harm in still enjoying them quietly. But to continue to spend money and offer support to this franchise is causing direct harm to trans people, and there is no way around that. torrent the movies, books, games if you can. But don't give your money, don't buy official merch, unless you're willing to accept the harm your actions are doing to the trans community.
When I say "enjoy it quietly" I also mean that loudly praising HP or the wizarding world can also do harm. People take note of what trailers people are watching, of what's trending on twitter (fortunately no one really gives a shit about tumblr anymore but still, be careful).
It also sends a message to your trans followers, if you're singing the praises of these books, advertising your house, etc etc. So just be careful and consider how things you might consider innocuous are being recieved by those around you. Especially those that need our support more than ever.
I said it in the tags of a post but honestly, I feel like I need to make my own post because while we're doing the whole "stop supporting jkr!" thing I need everyone to remember that not only is she blatantly transphobic (and specifically transmisogynistic), but that she and her books are incredibly racist and antisemitic.
Appropriating Indigenous American cultures for her American wizard school. Making all of the bankers in her books hook-nosed goblins. Naming the ONLY East Asian character in the books "Cho Chang" and putting her in the "smart people house". The way that she treats the Patil Twins, the only two other Asians, and the only South Asians in the series. The way that she treats ALL her characters of color. JKR's racism has always been there. People just seem to gloss over it for some reason and to be honest, I'm getting really frustrated and tired of constantly adding that racism is a problem in the notes of these posts. And this is literally just based on Harry Potter! The rest of her stuff surely has even more problems!
I don't want to downplay her transphobia. That's a huge issue that, I, especially as a trans person, cannot emphasize enough! But as a person of color, I feel like I need to remind y'all that it's just the tip of the iceberg.
I think OP of this post I rbed about JKR's racism specifically against Indigenous Americans put it perfectly. This has made it painfully obvious that people are white before they are queer.
It's not that hard just to acknowledge her racism alongside her transphobia. If you're making a post about her remember that she's shitty in so many other ways, and she's always been shitty.

With the drop of the new Fantastic Beasts trailer, let's take a moment to remember that JKR:
1. is unequivocally a TERF + openly supports and allies herself with other TERFs
2. uses her massive wealth and platform to fight against trans rights, such that an anti-trans republican senator has cited her controversial essay to block voting on the Equality Act , and
3. has retained so much control over the HP franchise that giving her money (through movie tickets, book sales, official merch, etc) actively enables and contributes to the platform she uses to target vulnerable people

Putting aside how much I hate JK Rowling for a moment (with the burning passion only reserved for someone who has horribly betrayed you) the FB series is a baffling mess to me. There are so many questions. It's been clear since at least the end of the first film that this series is about Dumbledore and Grindelwald, right? So WHY pick Newt as the protagonist? Why not Dumbledore? I mean he's probably the most enigmatic characters in the original series, we know very little about him REALLY and everything we do know is filtered through one of his students, who admired him intensely. So even the critism is softened. This would be a chance to explore Dumbledore without the filter, to really learn how one of the "greatest wizards of all time" could have been so buddy buddy with one of the evilest. It's like if we were dropped into the Harry Potter story when he was like 70 and he just went "yeah Voldemort and I used to be BFF when we were preteens, whatever." Like what??? How???
Newt is an interesting character and I liked the first one, a lot. But I just don't think he's the best vantage point for the Dumbledore vs Grindelwald story, especially since now they're going to have to keep shoehorning more magical animals into every movie to keep him relevant. And it's just confusing to me, if they were intending to tell the story of Dumble and Grindy, why start with "fantastic beasts and where to find them."
I know the answer is "because the Hell Bitch loves Newt" but let's be real, she could have told a standalone Newt Story and then done a Grindledore trilogy and it would have made far more sense and been better plotted. Maybe they should stop letting her make these kind of decisions, especially these days because clearly her judgement is what the youths call "completely fucky."
Unless the new Harry Potter special with Emma, Daniel and Rupert is just an hour or more of them denigrating JK Rowling and using this platform to draw attention to the harm she has done and is doing, I do not want any part of it.
I'm sorry, I have no interest in watching the cast reunite just to praise the wizarding world of Harry Potter that she created. it's a world wide phenomenon! It's brought so much positivity to the world! It's inspirational!

I think if JK wasn’t an absolute crapfest of a human being, I might be inclined to feel less anger towards the goblins.
