ive seen a lot of people saying andrew is misogynistic but I don't see how he is? I feel like he is cautious of everyone not women in particular, but nora also agrees so could you please explain it to me 😅
I feel like the fundamental misunderstanding that people have, and I'm saying this as gently as I can, is reducing misogyny to simply thinking women are outright inferior. So, since Andrew respects Bee and Renee and to some extent even Dan, it's easy to correlate that with him having no underlying bias at all. Which is not true. That's what people usually also invoke when they say "I couldn't possibly be misogynistic, the person I respect the most in this earth is my mom/sister/wife/female relative or friend".
And you're right, in that Andrew trusts very few people. This doesn't change the fact that the way he expresses his mistrust in women is disproportionately violent.
In text, we see Andrew be notably physically violent to other people twice: when he chokes Allison, and when he chokes Kevin. Kevin purposefully withheld information from him that in that moment Andrew believes is actively leading to Neil's torture and death which he could have stopped. Allison slapped Aaron, once, in the middle of an argument. One of these is not like the other!
Comparably, Andrew is not remotely this aggressive when Matt gives Kevin a black eye, when Seth calls Nicky a slur, or even when Riko terrorizes Kevin and Neil after the Cathy Ferdinand show. He gets mad, and he threatens, sometimes even with his knives, but he doesn't attempt to murder anyone. Because that's very much the implication of the Allison scene – she hit Aaron, and Andrew's going to kill her.
Andrew is also NOTORIOUSLY violent to Aaron's girlfriends, to the point where Aaron doesn't risk been seen standing next to Katelyn most of the time. Even if he's acting out of his own sense of justice because of the deal, there is no excuse for why Andrew targets the girls but does nothing to Aaron, when Aaron is the one who made him a promise. Even after Aaron has broken the deal and made it clear he doesn't want Andrew involved in his relationships anymore, Andrew's shovel talk involves threatening Katelyn until she cries.
Another, more subtle case of how this manifests is the people Andrew took to Columbia in his first year. Two women and one man. Matt, he took out of fear that his former addiction could influence Aaron, and he did it with permission from Matt's mother. Renee he took to analyze as a threat and Dan he took to see if she was worth respecting. Again, two different standards.
Just like with Aaron's homophobia, I think Andrew's misogyny makes sense when you understand his story. There were foster mothers in most if not all of the homes in which he was abused, who at best were turning a blind eye and at worst were complicit or abusive themselves; There was Tilda, who abandoned him and abused Aaron; and there was Cass, to whom Andrew's emotional attachment is clearly a source of shame and pain to him considering how that story ended. Andrew is a character that understands violence, and he has come to expect violence from men and learned how to protect and defend himself against that. What Andrew is clearly afraid of is emotional manipulation, something that's clear both from his past with Cass and from his mistrust of Neil. Emotional manipulation is societally considered a feminine trait, in the same way physical violence is a masculine trait. That's why Andrew is disproportionately wary and reactive when it comes to women, and it's also why the three women he respects/gets along with either are somewhat gender non conforming (Dan, in the sense of her position as captain), of an incredibly similar background to himself and can relate to him in that level (Renee), or have been the first people to listen to him and advocate on his behalf (Betsy).
So no, Andrew isn't against women getting higher education or certain jobs or equal pay or autonomy over their bodies. I don't think he even calls anyone a bitch or a whore. His misogyny is not overt and vitriolic in the way people expect misogynistic characters to be coded as. It's a much more grounded, realistic portrayal of how bigotry and bias manifests. He has higher standards to find women worthy of trust, and he is extremely violent towards the ones who don't meet those standards if they step out of his perceived lines.
Thinking women are inherently evil manipulating temptresses until proven otherwise is, in fact, misogyny! Andrew's misogyny isn't irredeemable and is something that he can/is working on, but it's still a pretty prevalent character flaw, and I don't think it serves anyone particularly well by ignoring the fact that it's there.

Eh yes?
AND NATALIE SHIELD'S (aka Renee Walker)
Renee's is also not talked about often-
She also went through what Andrew and Jean did (i personally think that's y she understands them the most)
I didnt want to forget my Queen nooooo, IM SO SORRY, she is literally almost always on my mind, how did i not put her. Of course we can’t forgot about her! I really wish more of her and the other foxes past would be focused on in the books. And in general more people should talk about her cuz she deserves the world honestly
My teacher was stressing me out, why does she like exe contact that much??
We all had to go out of class to talk with her about our exams, and then it was my turn and there she was sitting on a chair, and there was another chair, only like 4 inches in front of her.
Holy proximity, anyway i pull it a little back but not to much cause i didnt want to appear to be rude. And she told me what she liked and what she didnt like about my exam. And she kept trying to stare into my eyes. And i was trying to look anywhere but.
and then she had like those pauses, where i was sure if i was dismissed yet or not and she stared into my soul, omg i hate it so much.
Anyway eventually she didnt say anything and just looked into my eyes, and i stood up and she looked at me and smiled and her eyes are really big i dont know why it’s bothering me that much.
Anyway i survived Halleluja.
we’re about 60 days away from 2013 just think about that for a sec
i didn't have "i'm broken" teenage asexual angst i had "i'm literally being the only reasonable one about this concept and the rest of you are behaving like fucking freaks" perception issues
A rant about the aftg fandom and also fandoms in general. It infuriates me when people compare trauma. It’s always “Neil had it worse” or “Andrew had it worst” or “Jeremy had it worse” and i just wrote a rant about how Kevin also got abused and somebody reblogged it with the tags: “I still think Neil had it worse” and i know that person didnt have any malicious intent but its still so infuriating cause that wasn’t the point.
And Nicky, an Aarons trauma is somewhat forgotten. And Matt or Dans Or Allisons nobody really talks about it. It just rubs me the wrong way. I understand having favourite Charakters and I also understand trying to explain any negative things about them with their trauma,
heck my favourite Charakter is Kevin and he is an asshole just plain simple. But when Andrew is being an asshole it’s just his past. That also a complete different topic, sorry for trailing off.

Kevin's time in the Nest haunts me because we know nothing about most of it
Kevin got to the Nest at 9 and left at 19. Jean got there when Kevin was 15/16 (we know Jean got there at 14 and Kevin is one year and nine months older, so Kevin could still be 15 or have already completed 16).
This means that out of the 10 years Kevin spent in there, he was alone with Riko for almost 7. This man literally had to survive the Nest alone with Riko and Tetsuji for the majority of his time in there.
It is honestly impressive that when Jean got there, Kevin still had It in him to disobey Riko (even If in secret) or to like things on his own.
It must also have been so lonely. For seven years the only other person of a similar age Kevin had contact with was his abuser, the kid that owned him in all senses of the word.
How many things must have happened that we have no Idea about?
According to Nora's EC, Kevin was easier to break in comparison with Jean, since he was still a little kid and grieving. He was alone in the world and in a desperate need for love, so he submitted quickly and searched for warmth in the scraps(A starving dog will eat anything you give It).
But even If It was easier to break him. What did they do?? In what ways this nine years old kid was hurt?? How did he held on for almost seven years in there alone???
Because the thing is, 9 is such a young age. It is so easy to break a kid like that completely. You can do so much damage to a kid at that age.
Not even Jean knows how things were before because Kevin doesn't talk about It.
All we know is that they took this small kid, shoved him underground and 7 years later he already looked like a "souless puppet" at Riko's side.
The only detail we get is that Kevin had "grown up with the master's unforgiving violence, the first body upon which Riko could practice his fledgling cruelties"
Like, are yall listening to me?? THE FIRST BODY UPON WHICH RIKO COULD PRACTICE HIS FLEDGLING CRUELTIES
We are talking about a NINE years old. Gifted as a pet to another kid.
Whatever they did to him, broke him so much that "by the time Jean was thrown at Riko's feet, Kevin had mastered the art of putting mental walls between himself and whatever Riko was doing"
And even so, the fact that Kevin still kept some parts of him alive is so impressive. After 7 years as a kid alone in there, "some part of Kevin Day still existed separate from Riko Moriyama".
Kevin literally represented to Jean the hope that surviving Evermore was possible.
I am seriously gonna fight the next person that calls this man weak.
Kevin Day is strong as hell
i feel like kevin's position in the nest was so different and so interesting and yet we rarely talk about the complete picture.
in some ways it was like riko's, in some way's it was like jean's, and in some ways it was completely unique and isolating.
he grew up in the public eye, he had more allowances than the other ravens, he probably had power over the other ravens, he was expected to outperform everyone else, he was expected to bear and hide whatever abuse he suffered at the hands of coaches and other adults.
he was never adopted and he was given to riko - literally, he grew up directly under riko's thumb, he lived the raven lifestyle, he was expected to always be in the same room as riko, he was expected to witness and assist in whatever riko wanted, he was expected to bear and hide whatever riko saw fit to do to him.
he was expected to outperform everyone except riko. whatever agency he might have had was an illusion since riko always had the final word. he was, probably, riko's emotional support for years. and then he was the one to patch jean up when needed, and also became jean's emotional support.
but who patched kevin up when needed? who was his emotional support? confiding in riko was out of the question and while he could confide in jean to an extent, jean was already dealing with too much and kevin had to stay strong for both of them.
and this is just off the top of my head? how much is there that we don't know about?
Biblically accurate Andrew and Neil
They complete each other
