I’m a PC gamer through and through. I’ve never really gotten into the whole console gaming genre since I sold my Atari 2600 to buy my first computer when I was 8, a Sinclair. I still feel much more at home with a keyboard under my left hand and mouse under my right. For most PC gamers, there usually tends to be a slow progression of FPS to RPG to MMORPG. For me it was Half-Life to Unreal Tournament to Everquest, Everquest 2, D&D Online, LOTR Online, and ultimately, World of Warcraft. Along the way I even spent some time as a Guide for Everquest and Everquest 2. So, unlike some players, I already had a long pedigree of other MMO’s and when I washed up on the shores of Azeroth, I didn’t have the long learning curve that some have. I was already familiar with questing for progression, cooperative play, and class/race restrictions defining how you engage the environment. But that doesn’t explain why I became such a WoW junkie. It’s not the graphics, frankly EQ2’s are better. It’s not the races and classes, they’re rehashed from other games and mythology long past. It’s not the quests, they’re pretty much the same formulaic tropes that you see in other games as well. For me it was finding a great of group of other people to play with and the ability to drive my character forward to greater and greater power and prowess even after I achieved max level. More and more, as I think about this, I'm coming to realize that it's more about the people I game with now. My guildmates are becoming like extended family and I've never seen there faces. Perhaps it's the feeling of anonymity that comes from being addressed as your character's name, even in voice chat, that leads us to a more intimate discourse. Here's a varied group of people, from all walks of life not to mention time zones, that voluntarily come together almost every evening to do battle against the bosses, experience the same story lines, and sift through the same loot drops that we've all seen the night before and LOVE it. Maybe we're all just a little nuts. Or maybe we enjoy each others company. Or maybe, just maybe, we've created our own little community right there in Azeroth and that's what keeps us enthralled.
