     Not having a presence on social media could hurt your career chances. Social media isn’t only about sharing family vacation photos and keeping in touch with friends, it’s also an important tool in a job search.  Social networks provide easy access to job opportunities and trends in your field of interest.  It can also have a down side if you are not responsible with social media.  Some employers look at these sites to decide who you are as a person.  I plan to explore this topic further for curation.

According to a survey performed by CareerBuilder on employers, 65% of the employers admit of screening potential candidates with the help of social media to research on how the candidates represent themselves professionally. http://www.careerbuilder.com

If you are a new job seeker there are a few points that are important to make your social media look more presentable.  

Change your profile to represent your skills and experience from a workplace. Keeping your “Work and Education” section of your Facebook page updated is imperative.

Clean up your social media pages.  Remove complaints about people especially about a job or boss.  Get rid of all the photos of yourself that are inappropriate in any way.  Also look for any unflattering photos of you where you are included, in other people’s websites.  Just simply ask them to remove it.    

Opt for the highest privacy settings, so if something you miss cleaning up is still floating online, it has a higher chance of being hidden.  

Always try to maintain a good online reputation.  How about starting a blog on something that is related to your job. You can show just how efficient you are at that job.  This will show off your smarts and efforts.

Always represent yourself in a positive way through your social media accounts. You never know what special point that employer is looking for in a future employee.  Being positive is one thing most people find good looking.

Show how well you communicate with others through social media.
