          he was so screwed. jacob’s dumb ass fell asleep after smoking a fat blunt with a client earlier and he was unable to run all the errands he had planned to do today, one of them including placing a flower delivery at the local floral shop to congratulate his parents’ anniversary. for once he didn’t want to be such a bum, and he usually was good at playing the good son, so he was running to the store when his flimsy body decided to go tumbling. ❛ ah, fuck. ❜ he didn’t make too big of a deal, despite being extremely embarrassed at his fall, but now there’s a large roadburn gushing blood on both his knees. ❛ hey ! hi ! ❜ he ignores the pain and tries to get the other’s attention, knowing she works at the store and still hellbent on making his flower order.  ❛ please don’t close yet, i need to make an order ! i’m sorry i’m late, i got really high and– ❜ he looks down at his torn up knees. they do not look good. ❛ i’m fine, we’re good. i promise i’m not crazy, i just need to get some flowers for my parents. ❜

ginger cringes at the sight of jacob’s injuries, knowing that he was probably in a lot of pain. she almost wishes that she hadn’t been around to see it so that he wouldn’t feel so embarrassed. it was common practice for her to take after-hours orders, but she feels even worse about it since someone had fallen on account of trying to make it in time. ❛ i’ll tell you what. you can come inside and we can get you cleaned up, and then i can take your order. i wouldn’t want you to get an infection. ❜ luckily, ginger had a sink & a first-aid kit in her shop. she probably didn’t have any gauze, or anything that would be able to fully cover the boy’s wounds, but at the very least, some neosporin would do him well. ❛ could you tell me your name ?? i’m ginger. ❜ she unlocks the front door, holding it open for the boy to get inside, hoping that some higher power could prevent his blood from dripping & staining her floors. It wouldn’t be a big deal if it did happen, but if ginger had wanted to clean up strangers’ blood, she would’ve chosen to become a nurse instead of a florist.

haehyo laughs to himself, shaking his head at another rejection from haru. it wasn’t really a rejection, he knows this, but he’s still hoping that one day, with his charm & good looks, he’ll be able to convince haru to reopen the door for him. ❛ i’m not the one to ask. you always look beautiful to me. ❜ he laughs again, pretty pleased with himself, plucking the candy wrappers from haru’s hand to toss them in the nearby trash can. he scans the room quickly, making sure that none of the patrons were trying to grab his attention, before turning back to haru, his eyes having lit up at her suggestion. ❛ what, seriously ?? you’re serious ?? i’d love to see what kind of stuff you get up to when you’re not being forced to hang out with me. ❜

getting scolded by dylan wasn’t something unusual for seokjin — in fact, he’d classify it as a hobby of his !! he looks from his phone to the coffee table, then to dylan’s face, & then to the paper that she’d slapped down in front of him. ❛ getting printed in a tabloid doesn’t mean anything. ❜ he’s calmer than he should be. seokjin was already on thin ice with his father; if he was going to inherit the family business, then he was told that he needed to wise up. but old habits die hard, & seokjin’s habit of sleeping around with different a- & b-list celebrities was proving to be much harder to purge than he initially thought it’d be. ❛ this is the same paper that’s always printing stories about us, right, dyl ?? about how we’re secretly married or something ?? jill & i aren’t anything serious. ❜ seokjin returns his gaze to his phone, scrolling through twitter while reaching for his coffee. he pauses, smirking to himself as he lifts the mug up to his lips. ❛ i only have eyes for you, after all. ❜

          she can read him like the back of her hand, but what does she know ? byeol hasn’t talked to matty in a very, very long time. people change – and she is a prime example. she sets the plate down, suddenly losing the appetite she didn’t exactly have to begin with. ❛ i’m good. yeah, good. ❜ she’s more trying to convince herself than him. ❛ thanks. it’s, uh, it’s nice to be back home. ❜ she’s surprised at how well she’s keeping eye contact, even though they can’t look at each other for more than a few seconds at a time. she clears her throat. ❛ you look good too, matty. ❜ his name feels foreign but so familiar all at the same time. it’s a new feeling she’s never experienced before– one that makes byeol almost cower ever so slightly. ❛ what have you been up to ? ❜

matty doesn’t like the way that his stomach flips when byeol says his name. he had tried so hard to get over her after they’d broken up — long distance had been hard, & once third parties had started getting involved & threatening byeol’s career, they had done what was necessary, but that didn’t mean that it didn’t still hurt. matty had dated a few other people in college, but he always found himself longing for what he had once had with byeol. ❛ nothing, really. i just graduated with my master’s, so this is the part where i take a break before, like, figuring myself out. ❜ he already feels like he’s talking way too much. in a matter of minutes, matty has been transported back to high school, where he was always talking in circles around byeol because she made him so nervous. ❛ what about you ?? ❜ he’s hesitant to ask. he knew what had happened to byeol’s career, & he doesn’t want to make her have to relive the pain yet again, but he also doesn’t want to be rude.

ginger has just closed up her shop, turning the ‘open’ sign to the ‘closed’ position & locking the door behind her. she had done her best to clean throughout the day, so that she wouldn’t be stuck much later than five o’clock, but a last minute rush of customers had torn through the place, leaving petals & leaves everywhere. she sighs softly as she sweeps up, holst’s planets suite still blasting over the speakers of her shop. ginger’s parents had told her time & time again that it’d be in her best interest to play more upbeat music in her shop, but she just can’t seem to part with the music she had studied while a music major in college. it had been a wrist injury that had ended her musical career, but she found solace in getting her licensure to become a florist — & had even managed to open up her own, independently-owned shop !! she finally finishes cleaning up about forty-five minutes later, disconnecting her phone from the overhead speaker system & stepping outside to lock the front door for the night. ginger should really be more cognizant of her surroundings, but she doesn’t even notice that someone is nearby until she turns & sees someone tripping over the part of the sidewalk that she herself was always having to watch out for. ❛ oh !! ❜

          her parents told her he wouldn’t be here. that’s the only reason byeol agreed to make an appearance in the first place; she was getting extremely tired of getting asked the same questions over and over again, each time laced with pity and the nagging feeling that everyone was happy to see her fail. she swallows hard, almost choking on her own spit, and adds a big slice of cake she was in the middle of piling into her plate when she saw the other. ❛ fruit cake ? ❜ she holds out the plate to him. so fucking awkward. she’d rather try and act normal than make a scene at a family summer gathering. but she will definitely be giving an earful to her mother later. ❛ i uh- made it myself. ❜ 

matty’s heart is beating erratically, to the point where he’s afraid that he might keel over at any moment, & it gets even worse when byeol actually looks at him & addresses him. ❛ i— ❜ he looks down at the plate, & then back up at byeol, & he suddenly feels like some kind of coward. ❛ no, thanks. i wasn’t planning on staying long. ❜ he hardly hears himself as he responds, his heartbeat too loud in his ears. his fingers twitch & he has to resist the urge to reach out & pull her in, to hug her for the first time in so, so long. matty clears his throat, shoving his hands into the pockets of his jeans. ❛ h-how are you ?? ❜ god, what a stupid question to ask right now. ❛ you look... good. ❜ shut up, matty !!

          she’s ten minutes later to her shift, walking swiftly into the diner while throwing her hair up into a ponytail. while haru’s lateness isn’t that big of a deal ( customers barely come in on weekdays ) we all know there’s more to it than missing the train or bus. her usual excuse. ❛ i’m sorry i’m late, ❜ she apologizes upon seeing her coworker, but actively avoids eye contact. ❛ i didn’t get much sleep last night. ❜ she had woken up late and was unable to conceal the dark circles under her eyes. yet another weekend of debauchery that haru can barely recall. ❛ are you helping me close tonight ? please say yes, the assistant manager gives me the creeps. ❜

haehyo doesn’t miss the fact that haru is late, but he knew to expect it. he’d never been able to coax her into telling him about the things that she did on the weekends, but he was still trying !! ❛ i didn’t even know that he was here tonight. he hasn’t come out of the office since i’ve been here. ❜ haehyo rests his elbow on the counter, holding his head in his palm as he watches haru get herself ready for her shift. ❛ something keeping you up ?? if only you had some kind of confidant — someone cute, maybe named lee haehyo... ❜ he trails off, making sure to lilt his voice so that haru is able to brush his comment off as another joke. it wasn’t a joke, though, & she knew that. haehyo hadn’t asked her on a date since the one time, when she had rejected him & cited that she’d be a bad influence on him, but still, his feelings hadn’t dissipated. if anything, they’d just grown stronger since then.

matty shouldn’t be surprised. he really shouldn’t, & yet, he’s paralyzed at the sight of his ex. well — calling him ‘his ex’ is harsh. yoo byeol, at one point in time, was everything to matthew kim. she had been his childhood best friend, his first love, his true love. & of course, during the one summer that he had decided to come home for a little while, it’d be during a period where byeol came home, too. of course it would happen that way. matty doesn’t know what to do; should he run ?? hide ?? neither ?? both ?? he feels like his brain is short circuiting & to his chagrin, he feels things blooming in his chest that he hadn’t felt in a very, very long time. his stare is practically boring holes into byeol’s side, so he also shouldn’t be surprised when she notices & turns to look at him, too.
