Avishai Cohen is prolific in music and words, a creative volcano who finds his raison d'ĂȘtre melting with the heart of his wooden instrument. Cohen, who arrived at the forefront of the jazz scene being part of the Chick Corea Sextet "Origin" (from 1996 to 2003), has developed a unique voice and personality as a bassist, but also as a composer and singer. Internationally renowned because of his Trio, accompanied by the pianist Shai Maestro and the drummer Mark Guiliana, it seems that he found in this number the perfect equilibrium to explore the vast world of the music roots through the rhythm, but also through the harmony and the melody thanks to his classical background. This musician, young in appearance but mature and with deep personality, has been touring around the world with his powerful trio. Nowadays he is accompanied by the pianist Nitai Hershkovits and the drummer Daniel Dor, with whom he has just recorded a captivating studio album From Darkness (Razdaz Recordz), their third together. This much-anticipated album will come out in March 2015 with all new original compositions and a beautiful historical one, "Smile" by Charlie Chaplin.

Scherzo for an Old Shoe
0:00 / 0:00 Charlie Byrd - Scherzo for an Old Shoe
Blues Sonata is an album by American jazz guitarist Charlie Byrd featuring tracks recorded in 1961 and released on the Riverside label in 1963. Though recorded on one day, at standard length for an LP, this is really two albums in one sleeve, showcasing two rather different formats for this highly original guitarist to pursue. The Blues Sonata is set up in a pseudo-classical three-movement manner, with a polonaise, ballad, and scherzo, and the liner notes refer to a sonata form of development.
Well, sorry, but the classical trappings, if any exist, are worn very lightly by Byrd, his bassist Keter Betts, and drummer Buddy Deppenschmidt. Polonaise Pour Pietro t'ain't nothin' the blues, and a very fluid blues workout at that. Ballade in B Minor is Chopinesque in melodic influence only, including the brush-stroked improvisation segment, and Scherzo for an Old Shoe sets up as a Latinish number, then stays on one chord with an Andalusian strain.
On side two, the scene abruptly becomes very urbane as Byrd switches to electric guitar, takes on Barry Harris' comping, bopping piano, and engages in straightforward swinging and balladeering without any textbook definitions getting in the way. Alexander's Ragtime Band, Jordu and Zing! Went the Strings on My Heart are the merry swingers, That Ole Devil Called Love the relaxed ballad showcase.
Whatever you call the music, the whole CD goes down easily and musically.

Milky Way Galaxy
Our Milky Way is a barred spiral galaxy containing 400 billion stars bound together by gravity. From Earth, the galaxy has the appearance of a faintly luminous band in the sky. The naked eye cannot resolve the individual stars making up the band, and it was not until the invention of the telescope in the 17th century that it was proved that the Milky Way galaxy contained multitudes of stars. In the early decades of the 20th century, astronomer Edwin Hubble photographed other galaxies and determined that they too are huge systems of many stars, and not just small structures within our own galaxy. The Milky Way is but one among multitudes of galaxies in space. The spiral structure of the Milky Way is obscured by the fact that our Earth, sun and nearby planets are embedded in the galaxyâs disc. Observation of the shapes of other galaxies led to the realization that ours might be a spiral type. Today, new techniques for measuring distance n deep space are helping astronomers put together a picture of the true shape of our Milky Way galaxy, although much debate remains about details such as the exact shape and location of the spiral arms and central bar. CASSETTE PLAYER & HTML5 AUDIO
âIn 1962 Philips invented the compact audio cassette medium for audio storage, introducing it in Europe in August 1963 (at the Berlin Radio Show), and in the United States (under the Norelco brand) in November 1964, with the trademark name Compact Cassette.â Compact Cassette, Wikipedia
If you donât know what a cassette is, you were probably born in the digital high-tech era, an era that is undoubtedly exciting and innovative. On the other hand, if you know what an audio cassette is, you belong to the older generation, the analog dinosaurs that know the painful connection between a pen and a cassette tape. Since the old-fashioned cassette player is disappearing, we wanted to commemorate it by sharing an old school cassette player build with HTML5 audio with you. Itâs just an experiment and the idea is to imitate the behavior of a vintage cassette tape (play, stop, rewind, fast forward and side switch) and use HTML5 audio. The magnetic tape inside should move as well accordingly. Itâs far from being a perfect imitation of the classic cassette tape, itâs really just a fun experiment. You will probably find many bugs! This website tells the time using hex colours
It's always fun to look for new ways to experiment with colour; it's even better when it turns out to be a pretty innovative affair. JAMES E MURPHY is a Berlin-based artist, graphic and web designer and his latest project 'WHAT COLOUR IS IT?' is a fun take on the time. The web app teams up the numbers of the time with the hex colour number, simultaneously changing the background colour to that hex particular hex number. It makes for a pretty relaxing experience and it's always nice to check back to see what colour your screen has turned to this time. The web app proved so popular, that JONIC LINLEY turned it into a mac screensaver, allowing you to enjoy 'What Colour Is It?' all day, every day. Who knows â maybe you'll even learn some new hex colour facts without even knowing it!

Four records in 16 years may not be prolific, but clearly Brian Blade and his longstanding Fellowship Band aren't about quantity. While a seemingly scant two years separated the drummer's leader debut (and inspiration for the group name), Fellowship (Blue Note, 1998) from its even more impressive follow-up, Perceptual (Blue Note, 2002), the group's next record, Season of Changes (Verve) came a full eight years later in 2008, and beyond a label change also reflected the trimming down of the Fellowship Band from its original septet to a sextet with the departure of pedal steel virtuoso Dave Easley...READ MORE
Artist : Norma Winstone Album : Dance Without Answer Year: 2014
The great British jazz singer Norma Winstone once again casts her net wide for source material for this third ECM album with Italian pianist Glauco Venier and German clarinetist / saxophonist Klaus Gesing. Alongside new pieces by Winstone/Gesing and by Venier, the trio covers tunes by singer-songwriters Nick Drake, Fred Neil and Tom Waits. They take a fresh approach to Madonnaâs âLive To Tellâ, and to Dave Grusinâs âIt Might Be Youâ, as well as Ralph Townerâs âA Breath Awayâ (now with lyrics by Norma) and âBeinâ Greenâ, a childrenâs song elevated to jazz standard status by Sinatra, Stan Kenton, Ray Charles and many more. âAs Winstone moves ever farther from the Great American Songbook,â All About Jazz observed, âit's certain that, with band mates as sympathetic as Gesing and Venier, there's precious little she can't do.â

Requiem in D minor, K. 626 - I. Requiem aeternam (MP3 / 320kbps)
In this award-winning rendition, Dunedin Consort return MOZART'S REQUIEM to its original state, offering the opportunity to re-imagine what it actually would have sounded like during the very first performance in late eighteenth-century Vienna. THE DUNEDIN CONSORT takes its name from Edinburgh's castle (Din Eidyn) and, like that famous landmark, has great cultural significance in Scotland's capital city and beyond. Founded in 1995, the Dunedin Consort has explored the major Baroque repertoire and commissioned several new works. Under the musical direction of John Butt since 2003, it has won two Gramophone Awards: the 2007 Gramophone Award for 'Best Baroque Vocal Album' (for its recording of the original Dublin version of Handel's Messiah) and the 2014 Gramophone Award for 'Best Choral Album' (for its recording of Mozart's Requiem).
Sonnerie de Sainte Genevieve du Mont de Paris (MP3 / 320kbps)

Track: Sonnerie de Sainte Genevieve du Mont de Paris Album: La Gamme Artist: Trio Sonnerie
Trio Mediaeval â three Scandinavian women whose singing produces "a sound of extraordinary and consoling beauty," says the Boston Globe â offer a collection of polyphony from the medieval to the modern titled after the North Wind with their sixth ECM New Series release, Aquilonis. One can sense a reference in the title to the Nordic roots of the singers, as well as the bracing purity of their voices; moreover, the albumâs repertoire travels from Iceland to Italy, from north to south like the Aquilonis wind. In creatively realizing Icelandic chant from the Middle Ages, Trio Mediaeval accompany their vocals with discreetly textural instrumentation. The group also arranged 12th-century Italian sacred pieces and sings 15th-century English carols, with timeless folk melodies in the air, too. From our contemporary age come works by the Swede Anders Jormin, American William Brooks and Englishman Andrew Smith. In his liner notes to Aquilonis, John Potter â former Hilliard Ensemble tenor and longtime Trio Mediaeval mentor â aptly describes the groupâs ability to âcreate a synthesis of sound and atmosphere⊠history and geography blending seamlessly.â

Lyrics
Many Rivers to Cross Many rivers to cross But I can't seem to find my way over Wandering, I am lost As I travel along the white cliffs of Dover Many rivers to cross And it's only my will that keeps me alive I've been licked, washed up for years And I merely survive because of my pride And this loneliness won't leave me alone It's such a drag to be on your own My woman left me and she didn't say why Well, I guess I'll have to cry Many rivers to cross But just where to begin, I'm playing for time There've been times I find myself Thinking of committing some dreadful crime Yes, I've got many rivers to cross But I can't seem to find my way over Wandering, I am lost As I travel along the white cliffs of Dover Songwriters JIMMY CLIFF

With MbĂłkĂČ, pianist-composer David Virelles â based now in New York but born and bred in Cuba â has taken the folkloric rhythms of Afro-Cuban religious ritual and transmuted them into a 21st-century music resonating with mystery and meaning. The main title, MbĂłkĂČ, can mean âfundamentâ or âsugar caneâ or âThe Voice,â not the human voice but The Voice that is believed in AbakuĂĄ culture to be the voice of a spirit, or spirits. Sound is an element revered in this culture, and that idea â the worship of sound itself â was a shaping force in the performances of Virellesâ compositions on MbĂłkĂČ. The albumâs subtitle â âSacred Music for Piano, Two Basses, Drum Set and BiankomĂ©ko AbakuĂĄâ â indicates both the ritualistic intent of the 10 pieces and their sound, with piano as lead voice alongside dual bass drone and the polyrhythmic percussion of a traditional trap set and the all-important four-drum biankomĂ©ko kit, manned by RomĂĄn Diaz. Virelles has tapped into a musical impulse that is simultaneously ancient and modern, communal and personal, meditative and propulsive. MbĂłkĂČ casts a spell.

CLAIRE MARTIN (born 1967) is an English jazz singer. Martin was born in Wimbledon, London. She grew up in a house "full of music", and claims to have learned all of Judy GarlandÂŽs songs by the time she was 12. She cites Ella FitzgeraldÂŽs Song Books as being the life changing influence which inspired her to attend stage school and later to study singing in both New York and London. Her professional career started with her first engagement, aboard the QE2, where she sang in the Theater Bar for two years. At the age of 21, Martin formed her own jazz quartet. In 1991, she was signed by the Scottish jazz label Linn Records, and her debut album, The Waiting Game, was released in 1992. The album was well reviewed and was selected by The Times as one of their "Albums of the Year". Later that year, she opened for Tony Bennett at the Glasgow International Jazz Festival...READ MORE
