Her focus, as always, was on the book she currently held in front of her face. This book, however, was not one she was reading for leisure but rather a one required for a class sheâd been enrolled into for the fall semester at Aster Academy. It was boring, she had to admit, but not a complete snoozer. Though, when a voice called out for her attention she wasnât totally peeved about having to put the book away.
Her eyes lifted slowly before settling on the blond and his cat where they sat pretty high up in the tree. Tucking the book beneath her arm, she snorted a quiet laugh at the fact that she wasnât even going to hesitate. Since arriving, the only power that had reappeared was her ability to float. Unfortunately, she couldnât stay up very long. âSure⌠but I canât go as high as you areâŚâ
âIf you jump, I promise Iâll catch you..â With more effort than it should have taken her, her feet lifted off the ground and she began to rise slowly.
Armin sighed, relief washing over him. He was worried that maybe she wouldnât hear him, or that sheâd even ignore him. The thought of possibly having been stuck up here for hours too was an unpleasant one. He was glad that wouldnât be the case.Â
âCome here little guy.â He turned to the cat, gently picking it up and held it in his arms, making sure that it was safe and wouldnât fall.
âAlright, here we go.â Armin reassured himself some before jumping, a part of him worried that heâd hit the ground. His worry turned into slight surprise when he didnât though.
âThank you.â Once down he faced his rescuer, letting the cat out of his arms. âThatâs a pretty cool power you have.â
callousshade:
Ayatoâs entire face went a beet red, but⌠He really didnât want to bother Armin, or the poor greeter, standing out here any longer. The guy was giving them both a look like, âJesus, leave or come in, seriouslyâ He took Arminâs hand again, a bit more confident this time, and stepped in. Heâd gotten reservations earlier, worried they might not be able to get in otherwise⌠He was glad he did.  The place was bustling, and only one table, situated in the corner next to the kitchen, lay undisturbed. It looked beautiful⌠He wondered if he might be able to get a job as a chef here, or anywhere, someday. Though maybe that was pushing his luck?
Once he told them that he was under the reservation for Kirishima, they were incredibly courteous, even more than before. Even the reservations here cost a bit⌠Well, if you wanted to get in quicker. Otherwise, heâd be waiting for either a cancellation, or next fall. Heâd prefer handing over his money and getting done with it. His coworker seemed surprised at his dedication to the cause, but gave him a wide grin and a thumbs up. Maybe he was a little surprised too⌠Maybe thatâs why Armin said that? It was a little date like, wasnât itâŚ
Face still red, he sat down in the booth, quickly looking through the drink menu. He asked the waiter for a recommendation and a water before gathering his courage.
âIâd like to go out with you too,â he managed to choke out, before quickly hiding his face in the course menu. Please, dear god, tell him he didnât mess up. I mean, there was no way he meant anything else, right? Maybe it was too soonâŚÂ
Armin looked around the restaurant as he walked, it was really nice, like really nice. It looked really fancy and upscale, he wondered how expensive it was and worried some over not being able to pay for dinner like heâd said he would.
He came out of his thoughts some as he heard Ayato say to the waiter that he had a reservation. How much of this had he planned? It was really thoughtful, honestly, and something that he must have been looking forward to all day.
Sitting down in the booth, he still felt bad for teasing him earlier, especially since had planned this all out and had even gotten a reservation. Heâd have to make sure to apologize again later and find some way to make up for it.
Arminâs head jerked up as he snapped out of his thoughts, did Ayato say what he think he said? Oh no... Did he actually think he was asking him out? He... said he wanted to go out with him too though... His face became red again and he stared at the table. âY-you do? I... uh... Iâm glad.â He kept looking at the table but a small smile came onto his face. He did like Ayato, and he wanted to get to know him more and spend more time with him, so he supposed this wasnât a bad thing.
callousshade:
As they stopped in front of the place Ayato was⌠A little bit confused? Heâd seemed pretty happy earlier. Not as enthusiastic as he was, no, but he smiled cutely in a way that made Ayatoâs heart a little bit warm and almost distracted from how much his stomach was rumbling. His hand in Arminâs felt nice and warm.
âSorryâŚâ he said a bit timidly, scratching his head. âYou donât need to come if you donât want to.â
Truth be told, he was hoping he would⌠A coworker told him this place was pretty nice when he asked for some recommendations. Of course, same dumb coworker was convinced it was because he was taking someone out on a date. Even when he said he was just going with Armin, they didnât change their mind⌠But a nice place would probably be fine.
It didnât seem out of budget or anything, but had definitely dropped the homey restaurant vibe. One of the greeters was clearly waiting for them to take a step forward, ready to open the door for them, and music played softly even on the outside. A comfortable looking bench sat under an awning, and the place itself looked polished and refined.Â
The booths and tables even looked rather nicely spaced apart for privacy, with several dark wood walls, and each had a hook for coats. He couldnât think of the last time heâd been to a place like this. No reason, when he could cook, but he figured he might as well enjoy himself since heâd just gotten here. Maybe heâd invite Armin over for a home cooked meal another time. If he still wanted to⌠Maybe he was just tired?Â
âOh! No, no.â Armin had only meant to tease him some, but it seemed like he actually mightâve upset him a little. âAh, I was just teasing, I didnât mean to upset or hurt you, Iâm really sorry.â He looked down at the ground, feeling bad.
âI-Iâd still like to have dinner here with you! If you want... Iâll pay even!â His eyes wandered some, going back forth between the ground and Ayato.
Suddenly filled with some kind of determination, Armin grabbed both of his hands and stared in his face. âI really want to go out with you.â
It took him a couple of seconds to realize exactly what he had said. He told Ayato that he wanted to go out with him, what if he took that the wrong way and meant date? He blushed some and dropped his hands, rubbing the back of his neck. âSorry, again. Iâm kind of out of sorts tonight it seems.â He laughed nervously, looking around.
âWeâve been standing out here for a while though, so we should probably go in.â Armin composed himself, changing the subject and looking back up at him.
callousshade:
Ayato shrugged. âI worked at a cafe a while back at home, so Iâm more used to it.â He was glad for that.
Heâd hated his work at Anteiku, but the job itself taught him a lot. Now, did he actually do his work and try his hardest? Well, no. If he did, his coffee might have tasted half decent back then. He had learned something handy. If you do your worst at something, always, and the person canât fire you, theyâll at least have you do something else.  He kept to this motto with most things in life, at least up until he went out and started making his decisions himself.Â
This time around, though, his coffee did taste half decent⌠He couldnât afford to mess around. It wasnât as good as Yoshimuraâs, no, but it likely never would be. Maybe with him as a teacher, but that wasnât in the cards anymore. Not that he wanted it, really.
Snapping out of his daydreams, he took Arminâs hand and started to run. Well, more of a quick walking pace, but it was nearly the same with him. âI saw this restaurant down a bit that looked good, lets try to get there before it closes!âÂ
Apparently he needed to eat quite a bit⌠And he wasnât really used to feeling hungry like this. He felt like he could pass out and die if he waited another second for dinner.
âOoh, really? That sounds nice.â Armin smiled softly, he felt somewhat happy when Ayato told him things about his home. Maybe that was silly, but it made him feel somewhat special.
It was quiet for a while so when Ayato grabbed his hand and started running Armin was pretty caught off guard. He said something about going to a restaurant...? He thought for a second, it was around dinner time, so itâd make sense that he wanted to go out to eat. He wasnât really used to eating actual meals or at the times youâre supposed to, he was just used to eating whenever he could.
Armin started to catch his breath once they slowed down in front of a nice place, this must be the restaurant he had been talking about. He sighed a bit, putting on an annoyed expression. âNext time warn me before you start running out of nowhere.â
callousshade:
Thankfully, the managers of the cafe were relatively understanding⌠Apparently, this kind of behavior wasnât too unusual for people whoâd just gotten into Stella City.Â
âNeeding time to adjust only makes sense,â one of them said, a tall woman with a kind smile on her face, âjust donât do this every other day and weâll all be good friends.âÂ
Ayato tried not to imagine what would happen if he did. More likely than anything, heâd be fired, and have to go job hunting in a town where you were literally given what was supposed to be the perfect job for you. Maybe if you did it by choice it wouldnât be too much of an issue, butâŚ. Otherwise, no thanks.
Armin looked especially strained throughout the conversation. Was he going to be alright? Ayato leaned over, giving him his best attempt at a comforting pat on the shoulder.Â
Soon enough one of their coworkers was showing them around the shop, teaching them how to use the various machines and giving them the recipes for a few of the simpler drinks. Ayato would handle the lattes, and Armin would be on duty for black coffee.
If they wanted to try anything else, they could, but Armin in particular looked plenty occupied attempting to remember how to use his own machine. Ayato figured heâd have his own hands full with both lattes and helping his friend not get fired on the first day.Â
When the other employee moved back to the cash register, Ayato felt a little relieved to be left alone. He didnât mind all the help, but heâd prefer just to memorize what he was supposed to do and get on with it. At least he was only giving people their coffee. He didnât have to deal with drunks or anything similar.
Unfortunately, it didnât take long before an order rang in for a customer who asked for coffee black. In a way, Armin handling that was good⌠It was easy. But it was also relatively common. Ayato prayed for him and prepared himself to scream at any customer that would dare to give him a hard time literally ever.Â
Arminâs customer looked slightly confused as Ayato gave him a sharp glare, and their other coworker just sighed.Â
While it didnât go as badly as he thought it would, Armin was still grateful for the patience of his coworkers, he doubt he couldâve made it through the day without them. He knows that he definitely wouldnât have made it without Ayato though, he was the real lifesaver.Â
He stretched his arms above his head as he walked out of the building, yawning some. âAh Iâm glad to be done...â He glanced over to Ayato, a tired look on his face. âYou seemed to know what you were doing, it was kind of impressive.âÂ
The sky was fairly dark by now, it was obviously late. Armin knew he should probably be going back to he hotel but a part of him wanted to stay out longer and do more. It was kind of a hectic day, but it was also a good one and he just didnât want it to end quite yet.
callousshade:
Ayato looked back, surprised at how far behind Armin was. He slowed his pace, nearly stopping until he could be side by side with the other boy.
âSorry about that.â He laughed, trying to keep his pace consistent. He was a little stressed about the time, yes, but it wouldnât do anything to help Armin if he walked too far ahead and got him lost in a city he didnât know at all. âIt should be up soon, if Iâd read the map right.â
âItâs fine! Donât worry about it. Iâm anxious too...â Though Armin was probably anxious for different reasons than Ayato was. He had no idea what his job would be like, or what it even was really. Still, it was something he had to do. He needed money and the only way to get money was to work, so whether or not he wanted to do this, he had to.Â
Ayato was right when he said itâd be up soon, after a minute or so they came to a cute cafe. Armin closed his eyes and took a deep breath before walking in, this was it, his first day at a job that he knew nothing about. How bad could it go?

Ayato shrugged. âItâs really no big deal to me, so donât worry about it.â Having company was enough payment to him. Not that he would just buy Armin with money, but having someone around didnât hurt at least.Â
He nodded, finding Arminâs curiosity a bit cute. âIf youâd like, I can show you sometime.â Armin could make a decent model, too. Maybe he could ask to draw him sometime. Itâs not like he could afford a proper one at this point, anyways. Maybe thatâd be rude, though? Hm. âYou could always model for me sometime, to pay me back. Not like, nude or anything, clothes are all good.â
Patting Armin on the shoulder, he got up from his seat and began to leave. He had to show the way, anyways. âYeah.â It was already getting darker out⌠He looked at the clock on the wall, cringing when it said it was already three in the afternoon.  Eating took way too much time. That was always why heâd put it off in the past. Heâd have to do this several times a day now?
He sped up a bit in his walking, trying to make sure he wouldnât be scolded too much when he got to the place. Yes, art helped, but he couldnât live solely off it, not in a place where nobody knew him. Building up a reputation was one of the hard parts, and now he had to do it all over again.
Armin nervously played with his hoodie sleeves, sure Ayato said it wasnât a big deal but he still couldnât help but feel bad. He nodded a bit to himself, heâd find a way to pay him back and he wouldnât take no for an answer.
Hearing Ayato talk to him snapped him out of his thoughts. âIâd like that a lot!â He smiled widely, wondering how soon that would be. It fell silent for a bit, Ayato seemed to be thinking about something. âI... model? I donât know if Iâd be any good at it... but I could try.â He felt a bit embarrassed at the thought of modelling, but if heâd consider that repayment then heâd do it.
Armin was already shorter to begin with but with Ayato practically speed walking he had to almost jog to keep up. He understood that he wanted to get to work quickly but also he didnât want to be completely worn out before he even got there. âA-Ayato! Could you... slow down just a little?âÂ
callousshade:
Ayato looked at the bill, which was a good bit lower than heâd expected. Then again, he hadnât found himself buying human food all too often at home. He shook his head, taking out his money.
âDonât worry, I can pay for it. I mean, I doubt you had much time to earn anything yesterday, right? Unless we started off with money I never heard about.â He slipped his bills into the little pouch and put it down on the table. Thankfully, he had more than enough. What he thoughtâd last him a meal should at least cover today.Â
âI was able to sell a few drawings yesterday when I was walking around, so if you need anything to cover your food until you get paid I can try to help out, too.â He smiled. Armin seemed sweet, and he was glad that he seemed eager to go out with him again.
He wiped his face with one of the napkins at the table, and found himself looking forward to his first day at the job.Â
Thatâs right, Armin didnât have any money, he suddenly felt silly for suggesting that they split it. âIâll pay you back as soon as I can, I promise.â He didnât want to be a burden and felt bad having Ayato pay for him.
âDrawings? Are you an artist?â Art has always interested him, but heâs never had the opportunity to look into it much. Maybe he can now, he could probably look into a lot of things here that he never got to before.Â
âI guess we should go then?â Armin was honestly a bit nervous for his first day at work, he didnât even really know what his job entailed. Heâd hate to bother him but maybe Ayato could help him out with it.Â
callousshade:
Finally, Ayatoâs food came out of the kitchen. He was surprised at how excited he was for it, but he supposed he should be, considering he hadnât eaten in quite a while⌠He couldnât remember the last time he had a proper meal, but he was a ghoul who tended towards eating quite a bit at a time, rather than spacing it out. That way he could focus on more important things. Humans, he supposed, were not really built to do that. So he guessed heâd have to make it habit to eat more often.
It smelled great. His mouth watered, and he quickly dug in, overjoyed. The food tasted better now, likely because he was simply being too critical at first. It was human food after all⌠He wasnât accustomed. He still wasnât, but he learned he definitely did like sausages. Mmm.
âItâs good,â he managed between mouthfuls. He was surely making a mess, but as if he cared. Couldnât be worse than when he was a ghoul, whatever the case. His eyes shined. âCould you get food with me again sometime?âÂ
Armin smiled the whole time he ate, holding back a small laugh. He was devouring it as if it here his last meal, he honestly couldnât help but find it a bit cute and amusing. It wasnât all too surprising though, he hadnât been able to eat human food his entire life and now he finally got the chance to, of course he was excited.
âIâm glad itâs good.â Armin smiled, resting his head in his hands and kicking his feet happily. Seeing Ayato like this made him happy, he hoped heâd get to more in the future. âIâd love to get food with you again!â He may have replied a little too eagerly, but he couldnât help it. The thought of hanging out with him more excited him.
The waiter came with the bill, saving him from a potentially awkward situation. âWe should probably split this, right?â
callousshade:
Ayato squeezed back, trying not to look mildly horrified at that revelation. No wonder Armin looked near fainting when he explained. It would be bad enough to anyone else, but having to deal with something similar definitely didnât help. Of course, it was different, and it was on a greater magnitude, but⌠If anything, that just made it tougher, having to associate with something like that.  âIâm really sorry, that sounds awfulâŚâ
He sighed. He supposed plenty of the people here came from worlds like theirs. He didnât understand why, or know how he really felt about being here, but maybe it could be for the better that they got out of their horrific worlds.
âItâs no problem. Iâm glad you understand⌠Itâs good we bumped into each other. I wasnât sure about what Iâd do for food, either, so. Though we should probably get going after I finish mine, even if the heart-to-heart was good and allâŚâ
Armin was surprised that the other had squeezed his hand lightly in return, he expected him to pull away or something. It wasnât unwelcome though, he appreciated it a lot. His first day here and he was already talking someone he just met about the world he came from, how strange. Though itâs probably good to talk about it, he canât keep it bottled up.
âIt was pretty awful... Itâs okay though. Things here seem safe at least. I just hope my friends are okay.âÂ
He welcomed the quiet for once, it wasnât an awkward silence like before, more like a peaceful and thoughtful silence. A sigh escaped his lips as he closed his eyes, simply relaxing.
âIt, uh, yeah, it is good we bumped into each other...â Armin stumbled over his words a bit, surprised that Ayato had said that. He rubbed the back of his neck sheepishly, he felt embarrassed for replying like that, it just really caught him off guard. âYeah, we probably should leave once youâre done. I expect that weâll be pretty late. Hopefully we wonât get in trouble though, it is our first day here.â
callousshade:
Before Ayato could reply, the waiter came by, quickly walking over and refilling his coffee. He felt a bit of relief, glad he had a few seconds to recover before having to reply. It as obvious Armin was scared⌠And he didnât feel really proud of that. Maybe he should have lied? He doubted he would seem convincing, though, considering his immediate distress in reaction to the question. He wouldnât want him to distrust him, either.Â
âCould I have the breakfast platter also?â he asked the waiter, before being asked just about two-hundred questions about his preference on this and that. What even was the difference between wheat and white toast? He didnât know, but he ended up asking for what Armin had, although his curiousity got the best of him and he substituted sausage for the bacon. He hoped it would be a little bit more to his tastes. The waiter nodded before heading off to the kitchen with his order.
Taking a shaking breath, he took a sip of his coffee before continuing their conversation. âSorryâŚâ he begun, âI figured that might not be the nicest thing to hear over breakfast. You donât need to worry about it all. I mean, it was tough, but it could have been worse, Iâm sure.â He sighed. âI hope you donât mind having me as your coworker after this.â
Armin quickly retracted his hand when the waiter came by, not wanting to seem weird, he was sure Ayato probably found it a bit uncomfortable too. He felt bad for reacting the way he did, but his fear overcame him slightly. He hoped he didnât upset him too much, he didnât mean to unintentionally hurt him in anyway.
He was quiet until Ayato started the conversation again, not wanting to push him at all. âItâs... okay. Really, it is.â Armin regained his composure a bit, looking down at his now empty plate.Â
âIâm sorry, I overreacted honestly. Itâs just... um,â He trailed off a bit, not exactly knowing how to word this. âWhere I come from... there are giant creatures that resemble humans, we called them titans. They uh... they ate people too. I guess I just... thought of them. Iâm sorry. Youâre not like them, I can tell. They were completely mindless, there was nothing really to them. But youâre obviously a person, you were just built differently than others for some reason.â Armin smiled at him, reaching over to grab his hand and give it a reassuring squeeze. âI donât mind having you as my coworker at all. And... thank you for telling me.â
