Portfolio II Post
The following questions and responses share my beliefs and thoughts on Mastery.
--What does the concept of "mastery" mean to you?
Mastery is when an individual conquers a challenging task. It will most likely be something that takes hour upon hour to achieve. It is that moment when someone feels in sync with all that they are working on, working towards, and their self-existence within that work.
--Describe a master of something that you really admire. Post an image, if you have or can locate one.
Ra Paulette is a master of art. I admire him because he loses himself to an artistic talent that could be seen as complete madness. He gets so involved in the process that he prefers the company of only his dog. The love and passion he pours into each and every project is evident in the walls he carves. His work takes him endless hours of grueling work. He completes it because he feels inspired to do so. I also really fell in love with his work because it reminded me of the sculptures and creations I got to see in Spain by Gaudi. He also happens to be carving out caves in New Mexico. His most recent project, Tree of Human Kindness, is just outside of Taos, New Mexico. This little desert art town is where some of my family roots originate. So, he is passionate about art, life, humanity, and creation in the place I want to visit for a chance to add depth to my existence. What I find most inspiring is how he chooses to create.

--Do you feel like a master of anything? If so, what? If not, what can you do to get there?
I tend to be my toughest critic. I don’t know if I will feel like a master of anything until I count and reach well beyond the 10,000 hours. However, this master’s degree program has taught me more about myself than I ever could have imagined. If I feel like a master of anything, it is of my creative mind. Before this program, I felt like my need to write and create was wrong. After learning some of the processes I could use to create, I realized it was so right! I have much to learn about writing, publishing and the business. However, I feel like I have mastered a sense of confidence in my creative process and abilities. I will never doubt my urge to write again.
--What skills or ideas do you feel you have mastered in this program so far? What skills or ideas from this program do you feel you need more time to master?
I feel like I have mastered the concepts of a story. I have watched countless movies, television series, and even read a few great books. My practice for identifying the beginning, middle and end of a story came well before I started this program. However, I think the coursework forced me to take a deeper look into each of those elements of a story. While I might feel like a master of the story concepts, I still have plenty of work to do when it comes to creating those pertinent elements in my own work. I feel that I have much to learn when it comes to editing and publishing in general.
--Is there anything that you feel you have mastered or nearly mastered that you had not anticipated coming into this program?
I have to admit that I did not anticipate a feeling of mastery when it came to my creative process. Writing and getting lost in a dream world was never viewed as a success before this program. Often, it was seen as a distraction, even a time filler, to work on my writing. Now, I appreciate the process and feel like I am working towards a legitimate and realistic goal.
--What is the next thing on your "Mastery Bucket List" that you would like to pursue after graduation?
Honestly, my next “Mastery Bucket List” goal is to learn to draw. I have always felt a sense of joy and purpose in drawing. I have not taken any formal training beyond a middle school art class. Yet, I have numerous drawings and illustrations to show how committed I have been to my passion. I would love to learn to draw efficiently so that I may one day be able to use my art to continue telling stories.

The first image is a photograph taken outside of Dubois, Wyoming for a National Geographic photography workshop. Outside of college, I have lived in Wyoming all of my life. My heritage is deeply rooted in the majestic lands of the wide-open spaces of Wyoming. Images like this inspire the work I want to share with the world.

The second image is of my father and I. Just outside of my hometown you can find petroglyphs etched into the sandstone. My Father has always been my guide on adventures into the past. His stories of treasure trails have inspired my imagination. The stories I enjoy creating the most always seem to relate back to my sense of adventure and the hidden treasures of the past.

The third image is of my grandfather’s medals and flags next to my military coin collection. Family has always been an important part of my life. For years I wanted to serve my country. Something always seemed to sideline my dreams. On September 5th, 2013 my grandfather passed away. He was recognized with a military honors funeral. My family chose to have the soldiers present his flag to me. This moment sealed my fate as a soldier. It was the push I needed to take the final step towards the greatest commitment I have always been eager to make. My grandfather served in World War II as a Combat Engineer. He once shared his stories of war with me. Not only did those inspire me, they helped me realize that they are stories that need to be shared.

The fourth and final image was taken while I was training at Fort Leonard Wood. I overcame several obstacles during my OSUT experience. I was 1 of 3 women to graduate with a class of 180 men. Now, I proudly serve as a Combat Engineer in the 1041st unit known as the “Ghost Riders”. Through service I honor my heritage. Serving my country has been just one of the many adventures in my life. Each and every adventure has ignited a spirit of exploration and discovery that I have felt since the beginning of my life. I hope to carry that spirit with me as a writer.
Four Rules that Hit Me Hardest in Advanced Script Editing
Created by: KJ Eyre
In my ninth month of this master’s degree program, I found myself questioning whether I would be able to make it through this after all. The introduction to the course and its expectations sent off an alert beacon in my mind. The challenge, I thought came from the professors expectations. I wondered if I had the chops to live up to his high standards. Then, I discovered the challenge wasn’t from the teacher. It was all information derived from the work itself. My work would be the enemy waiting for a moment of weakness from its very creator. These are the four rules that became my daily battles throughout the course.
Flashbacks- The nature of my story, and my vision for it, led me to believe I needed two flashbacks. I was adamant that my story start with a scene of action and suspense. In that stressful moment, the protagonist would close her eyes and think back to a windy day with her grandmother. The whole story concept was all about a grandmother sharing her wisdom with her eager granddaughter. So, it seemed a necessity that the granddaughter revisit that day. However, on that day the grandmother needed to revisit her past to teach a confidence-building lesson. Thus, I had a confusing scene leading into an even more confusing scene from the distant past. It was also a lesson of letting go. The story concept can still be told, and more importantly it better be entertaining as readers and viewers experience it.
Using words like meanwhile, however, therefore, and generally- If you could not tell from the previous rule, or this sentence, I have the habit of leading up to the beginning of a sentence. However, this is not recommended in scriptwriting. It kills the pace of your action and your script. Meanwhile, the reader is getting irritated with the wasted time and wordy errors. Therefore, I strongly recommend you check your script over and over again. Generally, creature comforts are difficult for the writer to catch.
Spelling, Punctuation and Grammar- It’s no secret that I struggle with basic errors in writing. I would like to attribute this to my busy schedule or even the pace of this demanding degree program. However, I must admit it comes down to being out of practice and truthfully, having minimal hours of experience. I strongly recommend watching the “comma video” as often as you can. Every review lesson or suggested video link will pay off in the end. It’s like the previous students suggested, use the materials provided every day. It will not get any easier until it is knowledge you keep in your head rather than in a file on your computer.
Subtext- The final rule that challenged me was more of a personal battle. I understand the concept of subtext and avoiding “on-the-nose” dialogue. It is an expected tactic in successful writing. However, it is not in my nature or representative of how I was raised. It was always expected that you say what you mean. The idea of my own writing style is only a slight factor in this problem. I can easily write dialogue that follows the guidelines. I even understand the purpose in that, but the story is based off of my grandmother. She was truly an American cowgirl. The culture she thrived in didn’t have room for “beating around the bush”. So, I naturally found it difficult to add complex dialogue to a script inspired by her. It was another “let it go” lesson because I am trying to sell the story rather than the ideals a character is based off of.
This month’s class on animation has been an eye opening experience. From the first reading assignment I realized how intricate animation really is. Initially I found myself questioning whether I could even imagine myself breaking in to such a diverse and complex world. Then, as we started working I found an inner passion and excitement I’d never experienced. The suggestions of our professor really helped enhance this experience. After it is all said and done, I do see myself enjoying the challenge of trying to get work in writing for animation.
The introduction to animation, many of the creators, and the most well known animators from each county or region was almost overwhelming. I had a short conversation with my family on how I thought animation would be one of the most difficult areas to break into. However, throughout the class I realized this is a challenge that excites me.
The progression of class concepts and assignments expanded the initial intrigue I found with animation. The joy I found in creating animated characters was comparable to when I first started writing. The world and its exaggerated features pulled me in. I still think animation will be a challenging field. However, I find myself building up an eager anticipation the more I think about the possibilities.
A large reason why I think I found such a great interest in this class was because of the professor’s approach. This was one of the first classes that our professor recommended we build characters based off of our own experiences or ourselves. I found a stronger drive and passion in creating work that I felt more responsible for. Overall, I would say the experience has proven to be a beneficial tactic to improve my future writings. I have always tried to connect with my work and characters. However, basing them off of people I love has really pushed my efforts further.
The best part about the entire experience is that I am excited to test my theory of passion and connection to animation. I have been eager to continue my work from other classes throughout this degree. Developing stories, ideas, and projects will be the first thing I do upon graduation. However, this course in particular has sparked an intense interest in finding out what I need to do to find work in the field. I do see myself working towards a goal of producing an animated short to start off with. From there, I want to grow and expand with my work.
Storytelling and Storyboarding for Animation has taken me on a journey. I was overwhelmed. Then, I became immersed in an exciting world filled with inner joy and passion. Finally, I visualized an end game or goal. All of the classes in this Master’s program have helped me get closer to my goals. This course has been the first to help me expand those goals.

My experience as a part of an ad-hoc writing staff this month has been eye-opening. The experience provided me with some insight on what I would like to do as a writer. The process was completely different from anything I have ever done. Writing for something that was not my own creative property elicited surprising feelings from within. Overall, the process gave me some ideas and inspirations in regards to my future goals.
Being a part of a writing staff was something I have never experienced. However, I did enjoy the process because it opened my eyes to new opportunities. Prior to this experience, I did not realize what writing for a “team” would be like. Somehow it made the criticism a little bit easier to take. It also made it more challenging to write at times.
As a result of the experience, I now feel that I have more options in the writing world. Before, I figured that I would most likely try to write a screenplay after completing my degree program. I had little interest in writing for television because it seemed so challenging and foreign. The process of being on an ad-hoc staff made the process seem less foreign and in some ways, more rewarding. I still think it seems extremely challenging but I think that adds to the appeal.
My previous experience in writing was completely private and individualized. Most of what I wrote creatively was unstructured and “free flowing”. Not only did this experience force me to use formatting and structure, but it also made me face my fears and provide creative work for others to see. It was not the first time, as this has occurred in other classes, but it was the first time I created with intentions to take things to the next level. I honestly enjoyed the experience enough that I am hoping to follow up several of the assignments for more completion. It was a process I enjoyed and learned throughout.
One thing that I learned was how writing for someone else can be challenging yet fun. I really enjoyed trying to learn the sense of humor, characters and dialogue, and overall feel for the web series. It is really easy to get lost in my own world of characters and stories. However, trying to write within someone else’s world proved to be an exciting process. I am eager to see how the scripts our class provided are utilized. The idea of the scripts potentially being selected for production gave me a better sense of completion. It felt like I was working on more than homework. Regardless of which scripts are selected, I enjoyed that part of the process.
I also enjoyed the sense of new hope and excitement. The process gave me a sense of expanding opportunities. My goal is to transition from my current career into the writing world. I want to create some form of writing and have it published or chosen for production. I want to have a writing career and this experience has taught me that that could happen in numerous ways.
This video is about FFA Commercial
This week’s assignment was intimidating. I have never used iMovie or posted a video on YouTube. It was fun playing around with things but I wanted to do some more much. I am satisfied with the assignment as it is, but will look forward to learning and growing with the times. In the real world this assignment is very helpful. I feel like I can now create intriguing videos for my students and will be able to help them post assignments on a secure youtube channel. The bottom line for this assignment is that is was challenging, but extremely useful.
CCD Week 4
Prezi Protagonist Timeline:
I really enjoyed this assignment. I have always found myself getting caught up in a character’s history. This helped me dig deeper and validate the behaviors I wanted to see in my character and why he would have them. In my current job, Prezi is always useful. However, I would like to push further. I think this assignment will allow me to evaluate students and their actions a little bit better. It is easy to forget that some negative behaviors from people are just that person’s response to events in their lives.
Please see my previous post with the screen shot to access my script for the second week assignment. It was reported that the link was crashing computers. I apologize for the error. If anyone has a better way to post pdf files please share. Thank you. I chose to create a commercial for the Family Field Agency, or the F.F.A. My protagonist, Cameron Riley, is a tough street kid looking for answers. On his search the F.F.A. finds him. The top-secret agency has an agenda with Riley but they convince him to work for them. Riley has special fighting skills and succeeds within the agency. Ultimately, he uses the agency to pursue his master plans. The question is who is really being used? The idea of the commercial was for it to be a recruiting commercial. The music would be vital, just like the Army uses epic instrumentals paired with powerful images. Cameron would be giving testimony on how the agency changed his life. What I learned from this assignment for my current job is technology application. I did not know how to post a pdf. Hopefully, this format is what was needed. I also had fun plotting out an inspirational commercial. I love the Army ads, but this had to have a little twist in approach. Overall, I am excited to get feedback.
Here is a screen shot of my script, just in case there is an issue with the zippy share website.
Pinterest Board for Character Develop
I created a Pinterest board for one of my first assignments in Character Creation and Development. The assignment was great because I was able to test the strength of a character. I will be eager to see what my classmates think if a discussion board assignment is created. I know there are limitations in the character I created because he is young. I need to find a way to strengthen him or change his age. Perhaps someone will have a good suggestion. Either way, I am loving this class and program!

This was inspired by our final Go-To for AVS. It is also a small portrayal of my struggles with the balance of good grammar and free-spirited creativity.
I like this version better!
My Valentine's Card!
Hint Fiction
I really loved this assignment. I had never heard of Hint Fiction. The challenge was fun and I think it became a sentimental assignment for me.
Alz Prison
“Who are you? Let me go! I want my Mommy!” she screamed. Her children cried until her final breath became her freedom.
Maybe I will share Ghost Patrol later.
