The face of privilege and entitlement. One I know well. I will not let the fear of this face curtail my actions any longer.
Rembrandt van Rijn’s The Shell. 1650.
Time to come out.
Patti Smith’s Gloria from her 1975 album Horses.
This is the face of a survivor.
A face glowing with spirit, determination and strength in the aftermath of persistent neglect and abuse. My face has changed over the course of two years. It bears the scars and is visibly hardened by this relentless battle.
This is the face of a woman who has stepped into the darkness and fought to live. Sometimes winning, sometimes losing.
My one goal in life was to avoid repeating my mother’s mistake. I hid myself for fear of finding myself in a relationship with ‘that kind of man’. I told myself I would never stay, I would always walk. Now I know it’s not so easy.
I didn’t realise that the abusive man didn’t need to come from the outside. He lived inside of me. His oppressive tactics a black tar running through my veins, penetrating my bones to control and inflict pain on me. Draining my passion, isolating me from the world and commanding me to shrink smaller and smaller.
For a time I believed him. That my only option was to perform for him. To flagellate myself for daring to be alive. Believing him when he said I could never shake the shame that plagued me. Believing him that I didn’t deserve forgiveness. Believing him that I would never know enough to speak. Believing him that I needed to be perfect to act, to move. Believing him that I deserved punishment.
Now I know I have a choice. I lived in his prison for too long. Now, I use my voice and move my feet to choose differently. To break the cycle.
I see you, abuser. The spotlight is on and you have nowhere to hide. You are not welcome here. It’s time for you to fuck off.
Dolly Parton singing Jolene. 1988.
Berthe Morisot’s Le berceau (The cradle),1872, Musée d’Orsay, Paris.
Enough internal dwelling. We are no longer chained to the domestic sphere. You know enough, use your liberty, speak up, speak out. Choose your destiny.
Piero Della Francesca, Flagellation of Christ, 1455 - 1460, Ducal Palace, Italy.
Enough flagellation. Enough abuse. Enough.
A young Claire Hale about to shove a pole into a boy’s eye. Malice. Fury. Revenge. Chapter 66, Season Six, House of Cards. Released November 2, 2018.

Katsushika Hokusai’s Shower of the New Yanagi Bridge. A woodblock print from the Japanese Edo period (1615 - 1868).
The rain will come. The wind will come. Storms will come. They will pass. Soothe yourself through the weather.
Terry chooses to stay with the 99th Precinct. Still from Det. Dave Majors, episode 21 of Brooklyn 99′s second season.
“I had to do it myself.”
Judy Garland performing ‘Somewhere Over the Rainbow’ in the 1939 film, The Wizard of Oz.
I see rainbows all around me.
Australian Member of Parliament, Julie Bishop, resigning from her position as Foreign Minister. Captured by photographer Alex Ellinghausen. 27 August 2018.
St. Joseph’s Maori Girls’ College singing Hine E Hine.

“Adwoa?
Adwoa?
Can you hear me?
Adwoa?
This isn’t you. You can’t just stay in here.
I promise you there’s somewhere else out there.
Adwoa, keep moving.
There is so much to see. So many places to go.
Just keep moving.”
Ringo Starr singing The Beatles’ classic With a Little Help from My Friends.
