Remembering day 1 on el Camino de Santiago. Leaving Logrono, on my first day of walking, I met Marcelino. At first he appeared to be a profiteer making a buck off of tourists and pilgrims, selling fruit, pilgrim paraphernalia, and stamping one's pilgrim credentials. Though as I walked up to buy a scalloped shell, a symbol of the pilgrim, I noticed he was just asking for donations. He sensed my resistance and had me come sit next to him. There was a special sparkle in his eyes while he asked me about my life and I slowly responded back in my limited Spanish. He knew that the Camino would change me and that today was the start of one of the most beautiful and challenging journeys of my life. He, like many others along the camino give food, drink, encouragement, and love to pilgrims who set out on this journey. They are welcomed angels along the way.
