Smile for the camera // Kadam
"No, dad, the other button." Kurt sighed into the phone, shaking his head as he tried to explain to his father how to log onto the Skype account he had made for him.
"I'm clicking what I see, son!" Burt Hummel huffed back and Kurt rolled his eyes again. This was impossible.
"Is Carole there? Put her on." The phone switched hands and after a short chat with his step-mom he saw the icon next to his father's name change from offline to online and he clicked it, smiling when a screen appeared and he saw his father and step-mom through a slightly out of focus image on the laptop screen. Carole said her goodbye and kissed Burt on the lips before disappearing from view.
"HAPPY FATHER'S DAY!" Kurt says, beaming as he sees his father sitting forward so he could see the screen on his end better, "Can you hear me?"
Burt smiles and leans forward more. He looks uncomfortable and happy at the same time. It always amused Kurt how little his father knew or understood about technology. Give the guy a hunker of a car and he'll fix it up in no time but hand him a laptop and he is more likely to throw it out the window then turn it on. The older Hummel removed the baseball cap he is wearing and smooths his hand over his head. "It's good to hear from you, Kurt. How are things going with you. And where are you? It doesn't look like a house where you are right now."
Kurt smiles even wider and his heart swells. It still is scary thinking about how many times he almost lost his father. He wonders if his father has the same feeling about what happened with the shooting but he pushing those thoughts aside. They are both alive and happy and that is what matters, "I'm in a hotel right now in Paris. I had to come here to do a few things for Vogue. How are you? What are you up to today?"
"Paris, huh? Where is the Adam kid?" Kurt smiles even more because even though his father is trying to sound indifferent and even maybe a little threatening he knows how much his dad had hit it off with Adam, "I thought you two were going to stick together while you were out there."
"Adam is out picking up food. He should be back soon. Now, what are your plans for today?"
They spend the next few minutes talking about Burt's plans to go to a ballgame with Finn and they bring up father's day from the past and laugh about the times Burt took Kurt to a game only to have his son fall asleep or complain about what everyone was wearing. They chat about what Kurt has been up to in London and Paris and about how Rachel and Santana are doing in New York and how the tired shop is going. Kurt asks his father how everything in D.C. is going and the conversation flows naturally and easily.
Kurt hears the door open and he turns away from the computer screen to smile at Adam and motion for him to come over, "Adam just got here," He explains to his father softly. He tries to hide the smile that always appears when Adam is around but he fails to cover it up and he knows it not only because he can see himself in the small video box off to the side but his father is also giving him a knowing smile. It kind of reminds Kurt of the way he looked at his father when he watched Carole walk away after she kissed him goodbye earlier. It was a nice feeling to know his father was just as loved, if not more, than he was. It was good to know his old man was happy somewhere miles away from where he was now.
"Well, tell the kid to come over here!" He says, nodding at Adam once he is next to Kurt and in the shot as well, "You going to call your old man as well, right?" He asks and Kurt rolls his eyes at the lack of greeting.
It was nice to be surrounded by his two favorite men, Kurt had to admit.
