leave me alone but also give me constant attention
"I'm not trying to be nosy or anything, but... I've been seeing you here a lot lately, always by yourself. I just wanted to say, if you have anything on your mind, I'd listen."
Although she had played basketball a little back in her high school days, she was never as good as she had once anticipated to be. Bored out of her mind with the same, dull workouts, she decided to pick the sport back up again at her local gym. Although Jae could catch someone else there to play a quick game with every once in a while, she often practiced on her own.
She walked to the side of the court where her bottle of water was located, picking it up to take a sip before a voice caught her attention. Her face flushed slightly, somewhat embarrassed— was it odd for someone to be in here alone?
"Ah, that’s very sweet of you, but I’m fine!" She grinned at the male, shrugging a shoulder soon after. "I just come in here when I don’t feel like doin’ my normal cardio workout… wanna play a game with me?"
"I'm not trying to be nosy or anything, but...I've been seeing you here a lot lately, always by yourself. I just wanted to say, if you have anything on your mind, I'd listen."
Things like happy hour were horrible for women like Jae. After receiving news of her parents’ divorce, she began to frequent the bar down the street from her apartment, drinking just enough so that she could feel a buzz without handicapping her ability to get home safely.
But this particular trip felt strange. She wasn’t sure if it was the overwhelming sense of guilt that she had about keeping her new hobby from the people that she loved, or if she was forgetting something important, but the alcohol tasted unappealing that night.
The sound of the man’s voice collided with her train of thought, turning her head to the left before piquing her brows, fingers twirling the stem from a cherry that was previously adorning her drink.
"Ah, it’s gonna sound so stupid out loud— but my parents are splittin’ up and I feel like it’s my fault… feel like I didn’t do enough to keep it from happening."
Icebreakers
"Excuse me, but you’ve got a little something on your face there."
"Well... this is awkward."
"I guess this is the part where we shake hands and say 'nice to meet you', right?"
"I've seen you here before, but I guess I just never had the courage to say hello before."
"I'm so excited to finally meet you in person! I've always dreamed of this."
"Sorry, but, um... am I the only one confused here? Why hasn't anyone else showed up?"
"Watch out!"
"Am I dead? Are you an angel?"
"Okay, okay, listen. I miiiiight have had a little too much, and I miiight need someone to help me get home. You look trustworthy, so let's go."
"I'm sorry--please, can you help me?"
"I look forward to working with you."
"I look forward to serving you."
"Stay still! I'm trying to stop the bleeding!"
"I'm not trying to be nosy or anything, but... I've been seeing you here a lot lately, always by yourself. I just wanted to say, if you have anything on your mind, I'd listen."
"Um, I know you don't know me, but I think what you did back there was very brave."
"Some weather we're having, huh?"
