Rhinoceros beetle commission for a customer who asked for two versions with different colors!
This shouldn’t have happened the way that it did.
It was fine. It was normal, just hanging out at Kyoko’s like he has been for awhile now. Something that he was forced into by the woman himself, but now he has recently come to like. It was routine that he hung out at Kyoko’s while Tohru was at work. To keep her company and to wait out the shift until she left to go and meet her on her break.
It was usually just them watching some stupid game show, yelling at each other and being obnoxiously competitive; or sitting at the table and talking about whatever came to mind. Talking was made easier now that Kyoko knew about the curse. At least the simple parts of it. She asked about school and his training and he would ask about work and how her doctor visits were going.
He guessed that routine had to break at some point.
It was different this night. The game show competition got way too heated. It turned physical, harmless wrestling while Kyoko was trying to make sure he didn’t transform. Kyo didn’t see Kyoko swipe his leg as he fell down. She pinned him. Some taunts- words he can’t remember now. He guessed that she wanted the game to continue, to be childish and have him chase her. Not knowing what would happen and kyo trying to squirm his way out (for someone who looks weak she sure as hell wasn’t), she took his beads off when he wasn’t paying attention.
Before the pain took over, he saw Kyoko jump up in victory, going to taunt kyo to chase her, and then slowly stopping to realize that the game was over.
The game was over.
All he could feel was pain, immense amounts of it as he felt his bones shifting and morphing into something that was inhumane. He screamed in agony, not focused on how her upstairs neighbors would think someone was dying. The pain, the steam, his screaming didn’t stop until the transformation was complete. Until this monstrous form consumed him and took over.
Relief from the pain only lasted a second until he started panicking. Kyoko knows now, what the hell is he supposed to do? Tohru accepted him, but Kyoko and Tohru aren’t the same person. He wants to run but he can’t. If he left, people would see him in this form and things would get worse. It’s not like Shigure’s house were he could run away in the woods, secluded by the world around the house.
There was no where in the small apartment he could hide. He can’t leave. Kyoko still has his bracelet in her hands.

The Cats Out Of the Bag
theredbutterflygirl:
Kyouko shook her head and kept shaking it as Kyou went on and on. For a second, she thought she was going to pass out and had to stabilize herself on the countertop next to her to prevent herself from falling over. When she opened her eyes, which she had kept tightly shut as he spoke, he found that the entire world was turning but she didn’t have time to wait for it to balance itself out again. She needed to respond and she needed to respond back.
“That’s bullshit.”
Probably not the best opener for a response but that was the only thing that came to mind at the moment. Taking a deep breath, she continued on.
“I just mean…this situation is bullshit, the implications are bullshit, the secret is bullshit. How am I supposed to never understand this curse if you won’t even tell me? You can’t just say that someone will never understand something without explaining yourself.” She paused to breathe, her mind still going a million miles an hour as she tried to process everything that had just happened. It was like reading a book and having the world building info-dumped on you; it was a lot to take in.
“So, let me get this straight…” Kyouko lifted her arm off of the counter and finally felt able to walk again. She tucked her hands into her pocket as she maneuvered around Kyou and began pacing in her very, very tiny apartment. “You are going to be locked up for the rest of your life after you graduate because…why? Why would they lock you up? What is the concept behind this? Is this a tradition? Where did it stem from?” She realized she was asking him question after question, but she just couldn’t stop herself.
“And you say that you can’t stop it, but why? What do you mean that’s part of the curse? I think I need a little bit more context here because clearly there’s more to the curse than you just turning into a cat.” Which kind of sucked because Kyouko had secretly thought it was precious that he turned into a cat, although she was sure that it drove him nuts. But there seemed more to the story here…something darker, something more sinister was at the root of all of this.
“But most importantly,” she stopped her pacing and stared him dead in the eyes, “why doesn’t my daughter know?”
At this point he feels like he’s being scolded for doing something wrong. Like he got a failing grade or was caught in detention for breaking the rules. Kyoko bombarding him with questions like this is making him even more tired and he wished this conversation would just be dropped. But he knows that it’s not until he tells her everything. So, the conversation continues.
“The curse is something that people who don’t have it won’t get. Shishou probably knows a lot about it but can never really get it.” He starts out, leaving out his grandfather at this point. That would be more explaining and he just wants to get to the point.
He doesn’t want to talk about his own curse or the cats room. It’s something he has avoided his entire life especially since he found out about the cats room. He hasn’t even talked about it with his Shishou believe it or not. “In this curse, the cat is the most looked down on. Probably has something to do with it being left out of the banquet. The only reason why it’s there is for a scapegoat. To make others feel better about their curse and to have something to pity. The cat is seen as... as a monster.” Kyo feels his bracelet getting heavier on his wrist. “That’s why it’s locked up. The cat needs to be shunned and kept away for safety.”
Now he knows that this part he has never tried to explain to anyone. He doesn’t even know how to put it into words. “I can’t stop it because it’s God’s command. I can’t disobey what God wants no matter what. There’s this... feeling of... loyalty or uh... it’s...” He sighs. “it’s hard to explain. The zodiac spirits have the... bond with God this... love that... can’t be broken.” He rubs the back of his head. “So even if I don’t want to do it, if it’s God’s order, this damn curse won’t let me not do it.”
Kyoko’s stare makes him extremely uncomfortable. He looks away, not wanting to meet her eyes. “Look I-I don’t know if she knows! I have a feeling Akito told her, but... I don’t have the heart to tell her okay? I don’t want to see that pain in her eyes once she knows or her to worry about me cause she worries enough as it is. I don’t want to cause anymore grief on her cause like I said, I’ve done that before.” He says the last part, motioning towards Kyoko.
Wow, Kakeru looks like a pain in the ass.
"I don't understand why the rat is friends with him."
Thanks, Girlfriends.
thefreshprinceofkaibara:
“But it is a date,” he said as he hastened to keep up after Kyou and gave the woman his own ticket, as well. He gave her one of his charming smiles as she took it and punched in a hole for him and handed it back. He slipped it into his pocket and watched the orange-haired boy beside him.
There really was something completely different about Kyou. In the past, he would have exploded on him for calling it a date, turning red in the face and being all weird and easily annoyed. Kakeru was probably a little bit of a dick for having enjoyed getting that reaction out of him, but it had also just been so easy.
But this time it seemed like he was trying to stay in control. Had he really changed so much since dating Tooru? Did she have such power over him? He thought back to his own relationship with Komaki. Maybe she did, too.
“Unless…” and he paused as they were a bit away from the kiosk but still plenty close to groups of people that they could hear. “Unless you’re trying to tell me that you’re homophobic!? Are you saying that two guys can’t go out on a date, Kyon Kyon!? What’s wrong with that!? Are you saying I’m wrong?!” He flung his arm across his face for dramatic effect but peeked out of his fingers to see how the other boy would react.
He’s starting to think that this moron is just trying to get a reaction out of him. Provoking him like pretty much everyone does. Kyo doesn’t get why people like to pick on him so much. He didn’t do anything to them! But, after years he finally realizes that getting upset isn’t going to do jack shit. Especially when he has to deal with Yuki and Tohru two weird friends. This amateur is nothing compared to them.
Maybe Tohru does have a calming effect on him. Or he’s happier now and is just too happy to get mad anymore. That doesn’t mean he won’t get annoyed. Like now. With this idiot.
Just pack your patience.
Kyo rolls his eyes. “It’s not that. Haven’t you forgotten that we both have girlfriends? How would she feel knowing you just said that?” The former cat then starts to walk away. “Now shut up let’s do.... whatever the hell you do at one of these.”
The Cats Out Of the Bag
theredbutterflygirl:
Kyouko resisted the urge to slap him. Not like a gentle or playful smack over the head, but a genuine slap across the face. Was he dumb? What was this bullshit emo crap he was spewing out to her? On the one hand, she understood; the pain he was carrying was large and all-encompassing. She had empathy for him; she could feel that weight as if it were on her shoulders too and it was far too much for a teenage boy to handle.
But on the other hand, to toss away life like it was nothing was ridiculous. As a woman who had looked death in the face, she felt more appreciative and grateful for life than ever before.
“I can’t ask you to forgive yourself,” she said after a long pause, one in which she spent time warring with herself over how on earth she was going to approach this. She stood up too, her movements hesitant as she tried to find her words. She was pretty pissed at him, truth be told, but she didn’t want to snap. “But I’m having a hard time processing what you just said to me about not wanting to live.”
She began to pace the room, her hands on her hips as her mind worked and she stayed fully silent. “I just mean…how can you say that to a woman who has come close to death and survived only to have the one person in her life that she has poured everything into be taken away from her? I woke up from a coma to find that my daughter was living with someone else, someone who had the money and resources to care for her in ways that I never could.” She paused and took a shaky breath as she heard her voice start to get louder, reaching for control to bring it back level again. “So tell me, Kyou,” she said at least. “How is it that you have nothing to live for? How is it that you have no life to live?”
His sad smile turned into a frown. Kyo couldn’t help feel a little guilty for saying that, but what he said was true. He had no life to live. He felt bad for Kyoko and his circumstance, something that he caused, but... it was the curse. He sighed. Usually at this moment, he would get mad and yell. But he was too tired and too much in pain to get mad. Too much self pity. Too hopeless. He bit his lip before he spoke. “Look, you just learned about this curse. There are things that you don’t even know about, things that you will never understand. Even Tohru doesn’t get it.” Kyo feels himself grab his bracelet, thinking about his true form and the night Tohru saw it. What would Kyoko do if she saw it? Would she accept him like her daughter? He pushes away the thought, knowing it’s too early to even think about that. She just learned about the curse she doesn’t need something else to try and digest. He quickly drops his bracelet. “I don’t even know if Tohru knows this... but... it’s a long standing tradition that... after high school the cat gets locked up in a cage in the main estate never to leave for the rest of their lives.” He whispers not being able to make eye contact with the woman in front of him. “There’s nothing I can do about it. I can’t go against it no matter how hard I try. Because... That’s the curse.” Kyo knits his eyebrows together, feeling his hatred of this damned curse and the love the cat spirit has for his god jumbled in him, making himself feel conflicted. The cat looks up at Kyoko, knowing full well that the person in front of him might be pissed at him, but no one can be more pissed about his predicament than himself. He can feel frustration rising in him, making all of his other emotions wash away. “Maybe I would like to have a future. Maybe I would like to get the hell out of here after high school and one day take my Shishou’s dojo. Maybe I would like to marry or have kids or die old knowing I have lived a good life. But I don’t get that. I get to rot in a cold fucking cage for the rest of my life not being able to get the chance to live the way that I want to.”
“You get a second chance. You get to be with your daughter and you get to see her grow up and be able to have a future with her. I don’t get any chances.” Kyo feel himself deflate, knowing that getting mad is not going to do anything. He thought he already accepted his fate, but he’s starting to realize he hasn’t. “The only thing I hope for is that I can spend the next few months with the people I care about before I never see them again.”
The cat feels his legs about to give out and he goes and sits on the couch again. He didn’t mean to tell her all of this. This is probably too much for one person to handle in one day. But I guess that’s just how it had to be. He started thinking about all the people he has to leave behind, but the one that hurts the most the most is Tohru. Knowing that he would never see her smile again causes his chest to tighten. “Please... please don’t tell Tohru about this.” he begs. “I don’t.... I don’t want her to worry or to be in pain because of me. I’ve already done that more than enough.” All the pain he’s caused her is more then enough reason why he wishes he never existed.
He did not appreciate the joke.
theredbutterflygirl:
She smacked him good-naturedly over the head as she slipped on her coat, hoping it would be enough material to protect her from the chilly weather outside. Tokyo, while not the chilliest place in the world, did have a tendency to fall below temperatures that Kyouko enjoyed and she’d heard on the news that this was the coldest winter in a while. It kind of felt like a personal attack.
“Oh, of course it’s freezing,” she said, as the wind bust through the open door to fulfill the attack on her very being that it had more or less promised. She scowled at the weather as she busied herself getting the keys and practically pushing Kyou out the door through his grumbles.
“Do you ever have a choice?” she said in a singsong voice, slipping the key into her pocket and then linking her arm through his as she tucked her other hand into her pocket as well. He probably hated it but Kyouko liked to think that he low-key enjoyed it, too. The orange-haired self-proclaimed goddess had always been a touchy feely person. She and her daughter would joke that she was a koala constantly on the hunt for a tree.
She also chose to diplomatically ignore his snip about her goddess status.
“Your Shishou is a pretty stand up guy,” Kyouko complimented after listening to his story. She wanted to ask him more questions about his mom’s funeral, and about his mom in general, but she decided that those questions were best saved for another day. There was questioning and then there was interrogating. She didn’t want to overstep. “Much more of a stand up fellow than that Shigure character.” Her face darkened ever-so-slightly. It wasn’t that she hated Shigure; but she was insanely jealous that he was able to provide for her daughter in ways that she couldn’t…and she also felt that there was something just not quite right with the novelist. And it wasn’t even about the smutty shit he wrote.
“I get having parents that suck,” she said, as she pointed out a vendor selling the famous hot cocoa that she wanted. She could already feel her craving getting excited. “Did I ever tell you about when my own parents cast me out? My parents were shit.” She paused for a second. “It is a pity, though. I wish they could meet their granddaughter, but I think they probably wouldn’t want to. They’d probably think she is as cursed as me.” She huffed, something between a scowl and a laugh. “How wrong they are.” Having their arms intertwined the way that they are made him uncomfortable. Being cursed made him reject any kind of touch from other people, even though in specific situations he would have to swallow that feeling and deal with it. Like now because he’s pretty sure that any kind of attempt of getting his arm freed would be hopeless. For now, he will just have to make sure she doesn’t get too close to him.
There was one thing that Kyoko brought up a lot and that is Shigure. He has an idea that she’s jealous of him for being able to provide for Tohru, though that’s mostly because of the main house than anything. It’s not like his books are that popular. He’s pretty sure that she know’s that Tohru is very happy there and would never forget about her mom. Though her concerns could be because Shigure is a shady bastard. “Anyone is more stand up than Shigure.” he commented, a little embarrassed at the compliment about his Shishou.
Kyo was glad that she didn’t push about his mom. It was a sore subject to him, like a few other things, that he wasn’t too ready to face. It would be something that will take time, but for right now, he would like to not think about it. Kyoko bringing up her parents, however, he remembered clearly. He remembered her talking about it when he was a little kid when the mom went on and on about her life. “Yeah, I remember you saying something about it when a was little. How they thought you were a disgrace and what not.” At least that was something they had in common. Other then their hair color. “Why would you want that? You just said your parents were a piece of shit. I wouldn’t want them anywhere near her. Besides, she already has a good grandparent so they can kiss ass.” He spit out. It made him think of a chance of Tohru meeting his own father and what he would do with her. The thought left a bitter taste in his mouth and made him ball his hands into fists. “She has a good family right here she made for herself that makes her happy and that’s enough.” And the cat knew that for a fact. Uo, Hana, her mom, and even the sohmas. It was something he found for herself and he could see the light in her eyes sparkle every time she was around them. And dammit, everyone feels the same way. Even him he thought to himself as he kicked a pebble that was on the sidewalk.

You know
Kyo Sohma
“Kyou-kun!” features light up in excitement as she welcomes him home. “I have a surprise for you!” /from dearroz ❤︎❤︎
“Oh? I finally get to know about it?” Kyo smiles and knocks his fist on her head. Shes been talking about it for awhile and the curious cat he is, he wants to know badly.
Hitomi
Huh. It worked.
Hitomi tried to hide the small, satisfied upturn of her mouth with a roll of her lips. She didn’t evenlive there and it was telling just how he acted around Tohru — much kinder than how he spoke to Shigure and Yuki.
“You’re fine.” She dismissed, coolly. Not that it was really fine for him to snap at her like that, but all was forgiven. “I’ve got a brother back home about your age; you learn to not take things sopersonally. But, thank you. The fact you’re willing to apologize is proof enough you’re not tryingto be an ass. I doubt a sweet girl like Tohru would be half as into you if you were.”
“She-she’s not -!!!” he spluttered as his face goes hot. Tohru is not- she couldn’t!
They’re just friends!!!
Ugh the women gets on his nerves.
Kyo huffs a breath. “Whatever! You’re not worth my time!” He stands up and goes to find the extra paper and wood they keep for when the shoji door breaks. He definitely can’t handle Shigure bitching to him about his doors at this moment. It’ll also get that that annoyingly stupid comment out of his head.
Yuki
To prove himself as so much of an amateur that he couldn’t even make instant ramen — it was a little embarrassing. But, Kyo was right, he did ask for the cat’s help. Now that he was living on his own with no luxury such as Tohru’s cooking every meal for him, learning to cook for himself might be of interest. Still, he couldn’t help but snap. After all, old habits die hard. But, it was refreshing to be every bit of himself around Kyo. Even the frustrated bits that couldn’t cook.
“Alright, alright. I can hear. What do we do now? Just wait for the water to boil?”
Once Yuki actually did something right, he turned towards the cabinet that held the few dry ingredients that the former rat had in his apartment. Kyo knew that he went out to eat a lot and would sometimes go over to Tohru’s and eat there - mostly because Tohru felt bad about his predicament. Kyo couldn’t give a shit.
The former cat took the ramen packet out of the cabinet and shut it close. This hadn’t been their first cooking session so he pretty much knew Yuki’s kitchen like the back of his hand at this point. It was strange to be spending this much time with the other boy considering how many years he spent hating him and avoiding any kind of relationship with him. Still, there was something that he found very... nice about these meetings? Though he couldn’t place as to why.
He threw the ramen onto the counter, not too hard to break the noodles though. “Pretty much. I usually put extra things in mine, but I don’t think you’re advanced enough to put things in it.”
