Why is it that no one ever tells new educators how to deal with the bad apples of the class. So a few months ago I had this crazy idea of giving a scholarship to a graduating senior at my high school in honor all of classmates who are no longer physically here. I shared the idea with a few classmates & some blew it off but the cool kids loved it & ran with the idea of helping others. So, a scholarship committee was formed (Adrian, Brent, Diana & myself) & we selected recipients. With y’all’s help we were able to give a total of 3 scholarships. We raised enough money for 2 & Diana along with her husband were gracious enough to provide an additional scholarship to a deserving senior. A huge thanks to everyone who gave this year...no matter how big or small thanks for your donation. We are planning on keeping the CHS Class of ‘98 Memorial Scholarship going so if you didn’t give this year you’ll have another opportunity to give next year. *Points of Personal Privilege*

1. It baffles me that’s some folks only vote in the presidential election & they don’t realize that the local is way more crucial to their well being. What’s even more astonishing is that some folks don’t vote at all.

2. Who are these folks that are being surveyed in regards to presidential approval ratings? I mean, do you get a questionnaire after you forward the Bill Gates will give you $245 email to 10 people?

3. Would you believe me if I told you that I know some parents who are afraid to discipline their kids?

4. Will the folks evacuating from the fires in Cali be referred to as refugees like the citizens of New Orleans were called when they were escaping Katrina?

5. I’m ready for the Thanksgiving break. The food will be awesome but those mid day naps will be nothing short of amazing.

6. Are you really doing the work of Christ or do you just go to church?

Special thanks to Ms. Green, the faculty & staff of South Belt Elementary in Pasadena ISD for allowing Mr. Cumby & myself to come in and encourage the men of their community to participate in the school’s newly formed WATCH D.O.G.S. program. WATCH D.OG.S. is a pretty cool initiative that invites men from the community to come in and volunteer to be a presence at the school. About 120 men came out to learn more about the importance of just being present in a child’s life. Thanks again for the invite Ms. Green & I look forward to hearing great things about the program. Discipline vs. Abuse

Parents, I’m aware that times may have changed a little but it’s really okay to discipline your kids.  Trust me CPS doesn’t want to them… it’s also a ton of paperwork & who likes paperwork if it can be avoided?  If you’re not neglecting them and the discipline comes from a place of love there’s no need to be fearful of any state or government entity disrupting your life.  Sometimes the talking doesn’t work and timeouts aren’t enough.  A belt, tree switch (not the one that breaks…the green flexible one that stings and sounds like someone is jumping when it’s being used), extension cord, fan belt, a punch in the chest for a young lad who thinks he’s a man and even a slap in the face for the ones who like to talk back may be needed.  

There’s truly a fine line between discipline and abuse; your kids should know that you are willing to habitually cross that line at any given moment.  They should realize that you will do whatever it takes for them to do what’s right and eventually become productive citizens.  Far too many of you new age parents make excuses and over-compensate for your kids which ends up doing more harm than good.  Their dad isn’t as active in their lives as you think he should be…that’s fine address it with the one you decided to procreate with but do not do the kid a disservice by overlooking their negative behaviors. You ignore it when you have to ask them to do something multiple times.  You give in when they pout when they can’t get their way.  Trust and believe that you are starting a snowball effect that will eventually spiral out of control and become way too much for you to handle.  Get it together and take disciplinary actions against negative behaviors when they happen…not when it’s convenient for you.

In addition to discipline you have to spend QUALITY time with them.  Spending quality time allows them to experience first-hand how you expect them to behave and act in public & when things don’t go their way.  Please don’t cut the fool around your kids because you can’t expect them to do things a certain way if you’re not modeling what you’re requesting.  Most kids do not subscribe to the do as I say and not as I do mantra.  It’s also pretty difficult to discipline someone who you don’t spend time with even if it’s your own kid.

 *Disclaimer I don’t have any kids of my own just yet so take what I say with a grain of salt.  J/K I see kids when they really display what is being taught and reinforced at home.  I see them in their most unrestricted element, with their peers & away from mommy/daddy goggle obstructed eyes so you should really take heed to what I share & please don’t try to debate me on this unless your name is Ms. Ann Dunham & that’s pretty much impossible because she’s deceased.

Top 10 Ways To Combat Negative Behaviors (cont.): #5 Be Consistent.

New school year...same techniques but they really work.  “Top Ten Ways To Combat Negative Behaviors”.  Be sure to share this with your teacher/educator friends.

Be Consistent.  Do not give empty threats…if you say you’re going to do something it’s in your best interest to follow through on whatever consequence you have set.  So please do not threaten them with something you cannot do.  Inconsistency is the fastest way to lose control of your class. The key to consistency is to continually remind yourself that your very success depends on it.  The moment they learn that you’re not a person of your word, the floodgates will open.  When you witness a transgression of your rules, your response should be automatic, even robot-like.  

*Pro-tip.  Do not engage in arguments or power struggles with students.  Simply approach the misbehaving student, tell them what rule was broken and the consequence, and then turn and walk away.  In some instances you may not even have to say a word.

The Brazoria County League of Extraordinary Gentlemen had their end of the year dinner on Saturday. I was a little disappointed that half of them weren’t able to make it due to previous engagements but my checking & savings accounts were elated & relieved. Last week the young men had a little etiquette training & this week they had to put what they learned into life application. Although some forgot which utensils to use & others were unsure how to use their knife it wasn’t a total disaster. I knew it wouldn’t be perfect but I accomplished what I wanted to do which was expose them to something different. Special thanks to @table24finedining for the awesome service & hospitality. Try your best to avoid writing kids up and sending them to the office unless it’s a serious offence.  Keep in mind that too many office referrals will eventually strip you of the power and control you have over your class.  Do not relinquish your authority to effectively govern your classroom to the school administration.
