So you know how in the Fuma Conspiracy, Zenigata becomes a monk after he thinks Lupin dies? Well, that was originally going to be apart of the Mystery of Mamao opening!
I was browsing Reddit (shameful, I know) subreddit for Lupin and came across a translated version of the storyboard for the movie, the opening anyway. It starts rather similarly to the movie, with Lupin getting hanged. But instead of cutting to Zenigata heading towards the castle, it instead shows the commissioner heading to a Buddist Temple. A worker leads him to a small house, commenting about how he always sensed something off about ‘that one worker.’
This is what he finds inside the house.
Zenigata has become reclusive after the execution.
Now, this may be reading too much into it, but It’s been shown, and mentioned on the Lupin wiki, that whenever he’s depressed or feeling down, Zenigata smokes and drinks excessively-But given his new position, he can’t exactly do that. So he turns to excessive wood chopping instead. The commissioner attempts to strike a conversation, and it reveals a few things.
Zenigata has RESIGNED. For how long? A while now, maybe immediately after Lupin’s execution. I assume given the beard, just how much wood there is, and the comment about his resignation letter gathering dust, plus the added quote of, “I’ve been looking for you for quite a long time.” And it seems Zenigata doesn’t plan on coming back.
He stays silent for a bit, beginning to cut more fire wood.
And then It cuts to the hanging.
“With his death, it felt like everything had ended…Every last thing….”
Zenigata then gets agitated.
He even seems like he’s crying on number 30, despite laughing at the end of his rant.
He’s only stopped when a photo is presented to him.
This might have had a chance of getting animated, at least partially. In an old trailer, theres the clip of Zenigata falling out the house. Back to the Reddit post, the user left a comment and talked about reading through the Blu Ray notes, where they share this information found on a certain section.
‘In the rough draft script, Pops remembered asking Lupin for any last words at the gallows. Lupin simply wished Pops “A long Life.” Before Pops could reply, Lupin fell into the trap and was staring up at him.’
