For today’s assignment I have chosen to focus on romanticism. I chose Lippitt Hall, located on the top of camps, because the approach of the design in a way romanticizes “Gothic” design or Medievalism. This can be seen in the structure of the tower in the corner of the building which is very similar to many of the examples shown in the video for today’s lecture of the “castle style”. The windows of the building are also very reminiscent of medieval architecture style.

The picture featured above is of Green Hall on campus. I chose Green Hall for the post because it represents Federalist style of Neo-Classicism. Aspects of the Federalist style can be seen in the structure of the windows, the pillars at the entrance, and the bell tower.

I chose this Vermont sweatshirt because when I wear any item with a Vermont logo I feel like I belong to the Vermont culture/ it reminds me of home. My cultural identification relies heavily on design. Not just when it comes to the label “Vermont” but also when it comes to the style/design of my clothing in general. If I’m wearing something with a Vermont label and/or athletic attire and someone asks me if I live there they are not surprised when I respond yes. Whereas, if I’m wearing “formal” clothing and I say I’m from Vermont people don’t believe me. That is because when people picture Vermont they think of camping, and skiing, and other types of outdoor activities, so it would make more since for someone from Vermont to be wearing hiking boots than leather boots.

For my three dimensional item I chose this wall clock. If the wall clock were two dimensional instead of three dimensional the clock would not catch your eye as much. One cannot tell by the photo but it comes off the wall quite a bit and is very large, making it a focal point in the room. The three dimensionality of the roman numerals and the clock hands also draws a person in. If that was lost the clock would not have the same effect. However, if you did not want the clock as a focal piece of the room turning into a two dimensional item would be beneficial. Since there are not any bright colors the loss of 3d would be more drastic because there is not pop of color to catch someones eye. This is something you must be careful of when going from one dimension to another. When turning this into a sketch highlights and shadows would need to be emphasized in order to create dimension.

 The inspiration behind this design was most likely the need to create a functional and sturdy book case. To communicate the specifics of the design to someone who was making the book case I would tell them that it needs to be durable, a color that would go with many things, and that it needs shelves that can fit many different sized items. To a potential buyer I would describe the book shelf as a sturdy, sensible, and versatile when it comes to color and the type of items it can fit. The inherent constraints of the book case would be that it is a book case, the size, and the shape. The imposed constraints would be the distance between the shelves, and where the book case is placed.

For a design problem I chose the desk chair in my dorm. The “design problem” for the chair is the legs. the legs were designed to make the chair rock when you sit back. However, because of this aspect the chair is unbalanced and very hard to sit in. The color of the fabric on the seat and back of the chair is also a very bland color and is worn out.

I would fix this problem by removing the part that attaches the legs at the bottom so that the chair cannot rock or tip over when someone is sitting in it, and take away the angle at the top of the legs. I would also replace the fabric on the chair to a solid dark blue color to complement the light color of the wood.
