Need to Know: Basic Asexuality Spectrum

    The asexuality spectrum ranges from asexual to sexual. Sexual meaning that you do experience sexual attraction, and asexual means you do not. Many things in between are simply referred to as gray-ace. Gray-aces are people who rarely or only under specific circumstances experience sexual attraction.

    Something important to remember is that every asexual has a different level of comfort when it comes to sex. One asexual may dislike it very much while another may have sex for practical purposes such as having children.

    While asexuals do not experience sexual attraction, they can still experience romantic attraction. Romantic attraction is exactly what it sounds like. It means you are attracted to someone in romantically rather than sexually. Most sexualities have a romantic “version”. For example, you could be asexual and homoromantic meaning you don’t feel sexual attraction but you do feel romantic attraction towards the same gender.

It would be quite a long post if I described all the types of asexuality, so I’m the future I will link to a post with the definitions of a lot of them.

Need to Know: Terms

The basic terms that you must know.

Straight Ally: Someone not in the LGBT+ community who supports and helps them. LGBT: An umbrella term that describes everyone who is either not straight or not cis.

Gay: Someone who is attracted to people of the opposite gender

Lesbian: A female who is attracted to to other females

Bisexual: Someone who is attracted to people of two genders

Transgender: Someone who's gender identity does not match up with their sex

Gender Identity: A person's perception of having a particular gender, which may or may not correspond with their birth sex

Sex/Biological Gender: A person's sex refers to the gender assigned to people with a specific set of genitals. This includes male, female, and intersex. Intersex people have physical characteristics of both males and females.

Cisgender: Someone who's assigned gender matches with their gender identity.

Non-binary: An umbrella term for genders that are neither male nor female.

Asexual: Someone who doesn't experience sexual attraction, but may experience romantic attraction

What is LGBT?

    LGBT is an acronym for “Lesbian Gay Bi Trans”. LGBT is the most common way of referring to people who are neither straight nor cis.

    Other common abbreviations include: LGBTQ, LGBTQIAP, SAGA, and more. At the end of each acronym, you may find a plus sign. This refers to every group who was not mentioned.

So, what do these words mean? Someone who is gay is attracted to people of the same gender, a lesbian is a girl who likes girls, and someone who is bisexual likes two genders, typically female and male. Each of these sexualities typically include transgender people. For example, a lesbian can be attracted to a trans girl, and a trans male can be attracted to other males.

What does transgender mean? Simply put, someone who is transgender has a gender identity which doesn’t match up with their sex. More on this soon.
