My makeup inspired by him (a still from our short film)

In our Pince video I wanted to recreate Prince's iconic makeup look and facial here shown by these pics
Amy -
I liked the textural qualities of Princes purple rain performance and it remined me of the texture created by the coins. I tried to incorporate coins into clothing by crocheting coins attached to string into rectangles of fabric. I then made a sleeve with embedded coins that you can pull out and stack.
The coins fall down the arm and the sound created when worn nicely replicate falling rain. The coins also sparkle in bright light which reflects Princes sparkling cape in his performance.

We want to explore specific performances or music videos by prince.
I love this 1985 performance of Purple Rain in NY.
I like the textural quality of the performance, his sensual sparkly cape and deep hues of blue and purple smoke that surrounds him. It’s theatrically mysterious and tactile. He uses the natural qualities of rain and dripping but exaggerates the qualities.
His performance is energetic, magnificence and aesthetic. However the performance is also deeply sad as if Prince is the protagonist within a tragic narrative, this is the crescendo/ climax of the story. He sings many parts of the song as if hes about to break into tears, this is an emotionally charged song and reflects the meaning of purple rain.
"When there's blood in the sky – red and blue = purple... purple rain pertains to the end of the world and being with the one you love and letting your faith/god guide you through the purple rain." (Light, 2014)
It’s about love and destruction. His performance is apocalyptic, mysteries, futuristic blurring fact and fiction.
"I think part of the success of Purple Rain was that [Prince] did open up and examine himself, and that it was real," (Light, 2014)

As prince had very extravagant outfits and jackets, as an idea investigating his character I thought incorporating his big sleeves he normally wears and a coin releaser advice this could a be a cool way of bringing design into 'cheating' as it would be concealed by his iconic, big sleeves
Amy - Clip of how I staked the coins.
Amy -
Trying different ways of staking coins. I really like the textural quality. The form created looks like a suspended messy clatter. But are actually an organised structure that has to be precise in order to support the load. I can see Prince wearing a garment that uses stacks of pennies to create a tactile textile.
I think this is an interesting system to look at/ approach to the world record? An approach that is more extravagant, out of the box that prince would do?

This website shows different ways of staking coins and some of them are really nice. As if sculptures in there right. It might be fun to experiment with this? As staking coins in vertical columns is maybe very boring? Maybe we could glue them into these structures?
The spontaneity of the images are really nice. Suggesting the coin towers were done out of boredom at a computer perhaps when doing homework or checking emails.

The first images are doodles I did when watching interviews with prince and the film Purple Rain - Faces, objects I saw and sentences and words I heard ect.
Initial ideas:
From the doodles/ mood boards I began to think about how to express Princes identity through this world record without simply dressing like prince. He was extravagant, out of the ordinary and pushed the boundaries relating to style and pop culture. I played with the design of the traditional coin and began to think of ways of staking that are extraordinary and ‘Prince’ like.
Amy - This is the only video I can find of Prince playing ping pong haha

Prince vs ping pong
I watched this the other day where Jimmy Fallon tells the story of how Prince challenged him to a game of ping pong. How spontaneous it was and how Prince disappeared at the end made me laugh. He seems very allusive/ mysterious. Apparently he was a perfectionist and got really good at ping pong, so maybe he would have trained to beat a world record even if it’s ‘how many coins can you stack in 30 seconds.’
I had an idea about the interview. Seen as Prince didn't like public appearances or interviews, we could do an interview with someone els who witnessed him completing the world record? I feel like this would go with his mysterious and private nature. But also how he was a perfectionist and somewhat of a ‘showman.’ Perhaps in this style?

This is a really good interview I found with Larry King - they talk about fame and why Prince changed his name to a symbol. How he describes his music (‘from the heart,’) about his single 1999 (the technological fears of Y2K.) He talks about his spirituality and where he believes inspiration originated.
I don’t know much about Prince other than through his music and stage presence and I’ve never seen a documentary or interview with him. I thought he would be loud and overcome with energy and inspiration. But he seems very calm and thoughtful, in control with a clear vision of where he wants to be and how to get there. Referred to as a ‘perfectionist’ he knows his success, for instance when he's made a good song but doesn’t seem arrogant. He talks about how the media has misrepresented him as ‘difficult.’ However he mentions that his music should speak for him not public appearances as this can never truly represent you as a person. ‘You don't win anything by fighting.’

My one min video... best time=22:01 seconds
This took a lot of attempts to get under the world redord of 23 seconds, and at first I could barely get it under 1 min
I found that (like Amy) using magazine paper was much quicker and one of the best things that helped a lot with saving time was using a scapel to do the first initial cut rather than snipping in a line, also standing up helped cause I could be quicker with my arms going down than across and also wearing less layers on my arms so I could move faster.
I had to go for a more simpler snowfake in the end with less cuts to fit under 23 seconds
Liberty-
These are some of the good attempts for the snowflake challenge, trialing different shapes that were easy to cut out, in the end I went for less extravangant ones which were quicker to cut out
- Stefano
I made loads of snowflakes do for the challenge. I picked some beautiful paper snowflakes attached to the doors.
Stefano - 1 minute video
I have been several times to attempt to beat the challenged. I gutted that I did make this. My closest attempt is 26.47 seconds!
