Libraries on Instagram
Do you follow any awesome libraries on Insta?
I am on my library's social media team and we are thinking about branching out into Instagram. I want to find some other libraries that have already found a way to use the platform in new and engaging ways.
Send some names my way!
Meet your ALA Presidential Candidates.
Julie Todaro, dean of library services at Austin (TX) Community College, brings a career of service to her candidacy, including terms as president of the Association of College and Research Libraries (ACRL), president of the Texas Library Association, and chair of the Texas Council of Academic Librarians—and with this service ethic, an understanding of organizations such as ALA with many moving parts. ALA has done an extraordinary job promoting the value of libraries, she said, and now needs to do the same for librarians. “You can have the most beautiful library, the best access, the best service,” but without the people who make it happen, she explained, the library alone isn’t enough. She wants to address ALA’s role as an accrediting body for MLIS programs, concerned that “we are cranking out unemployable librarians.” As the only community college–affiliated candidate and a self-admitted multitasker, she expressed a strong commitment to service across the entire library spectrum—“and [the ALA presidency] is the bucket list of service.”
Proud to call this amazing woman my boss! She's a daily inspiration for what librarians can accomplish and how we can influence the world around us.
Just being the tiniest professor at ACC graduation! 🎓 It's crazy to give out degree instead of receive them!! (at Frank Erwin Center)
Vampire Fiction K-hole
I love a good series. It takes the guess work out of what to read next. I finished the Vampire Academy series by Richelle Mead a few months ago, and after a recent "I don't know what to read now" dilemma, I picked up the spin-off series Bloodlines. (Which I stayed up until 2:30 am to finish last night.)
SO Good.
The truly refreshing aspect of the Richelle Mead vampire universe is the strength of the female characters. Yowza. They can kick your ass and recite Newton's laws at the same time without breaking a sweat. Other females in the YA vamp genre are your typical mousy damsel in distress that seem to exist only to ego boost their man-pire **cough Bella Swan cough**.
Californian Parker Dains protested after finding that The Baddest Book of Bugs was expressly branded ‘for boys’
You go, girl!
The feels are real! Loveeeee this
When I’m not spending my time using The Secret to get Mark Ruffalo cast in more movies, I work as a teen services librarian and I know some of my Tumblr followers are as well. I sent this email out to ALA graphics today—if any other librarians out there feel similarly, please send your own email to graphicsmarketing at ala.org.
thewanderlustlibrarian i found your twin.
I am 100% behind this.
Tumblarians, let’s make this happen. ALA could only get Cedric the Entertainer? Would love to see Chiwetel Ejiofor and Lupita Nyong’o added to the list.
How could you not love Eleanor and park? I cried all through it. It must be a generational disconnect. I so understood everything Eleanor was feeling and I had a Park in my life.
My Eleanor & Park is your Gone Girl!
Lena Dunham was AMAZING! #notthatkindofgirl
You’re a feminist if you go to a Jay Z and Beyoncé concert and you’re not like ‘Umm, I feel like Beyoncé should get 23 percent less money than Jay Z. Uh, also, I don’t think Beyoncé should have the right to vote, and why is Beyoncé singing and dancing? Shouldn’t she make Jay a steak? I’m sure he’s very tired after walking and rapping those two songs.’
Aziz Ansari giving an example of what it means to be a feminist. (via adoringbeyonce)
I highly recommend watching Aziz lay it down about feminism.

The most adorable little boy brought a flower to me at the library today, and paid his fines! 🌸📚 (at Salado Public Library)
Need I say more?
Thank me later. Make these now!
The Banned Book Thief
Like many librarians around the country I have been pulling books for Banned Books Week over the last couple days. Everything was fine until I stared pulling books in Adult Fiction. Multiple books from the ALA banned list were missing! Half the titles on my list were nowhere to be seen. I even had a volunteer scour the library for an hour checking every section.
Maybe they will turn up one day; or if my suspicions are correct I have a Banned Books vigilante on my hands.
Add this to my list of small town librarian frustrations.
Look at what just landed on my desk.: our September 15 issue! Great cover and great cover story by librarian Jane Jorgensen
"New Adult" (NA) is a genre that takes over where YA leaves off and embraces characters’ college years through first jobs, first lvoes, and first moving out on their own. Will it last, and what do librarians need to know.

Love this display. So clever!
