On the occasion of its 50th anniversary the Calouste Gulbenkian Museum in Lisbon with the exhibition „Art on Display 1949-69“ in 2019 took a retrospective look at its own as well as other museological display solutions after WWII. Together with Het Nieuwe Instituut in Rotterdam they put together an exhibition and the present catalogue highlighting the layout and concept of the exhibition spaces at the museum, designed by Franco Albini and Franca Helg, as well as groundbreaking exhibition designs by Lina Bo Bardi, Carlo Scarpa, Aldo Van Eyck or the Smithsons. Especially the latter case studies provide additional context to the groundbreaking permanent installations at the Gulbenkian and show that novel ways of presenting art in a museum often were only temporary. Aldo Van Eyck, himself friends with many artists, for example designed the first CoBrA exhibition at the Stedelijk Museum in 1949 and dynamically placed the paintings on the walls and in the exhibition spaces in order to relate pictorial subjects and display. Later he also introduced a decided urbanism to exhibition design when he designed a pavilion for the Sonsbeek sculpture exhibition in Arnhem in 1966. Against the background of the ongoing discussions surrounding the museum as institution as well as the often still very traditional presentation of art the retrospective view at exhibition designs and displays shows what has and will be possible in open-minded institutions. A democratization of the museum may also be reflected in the way the art is presented as Lina Bo Bardi’s legendary displays at the MASP in Sao Paulo showed: she wanted visitors to meet artworks on eye level with the possibility to walk around them and perceive them as a literal works of art. „Art on Display“ is a wonderfully designed and thought-provoking catalogue that I warmly recommend to anyone interested in radical and intelligent exhibition design!
Maria Cristina of Bourbon, Queen of Spain (1830). Vincente López y Portaña (Spanish, 1772-1850). Oil on canvas. Museo Nacional del Prado.
This wedding portrait depicts Ferdinand VII’s fourth and final wife, his niece Maria Cristina. The more than half-length likeness shows her at the age of twenty-four in a spectacular blue dress with embroidered silver flowers and bees. Her hairdo a las tres potencias -a curl on each side and a third hanging over the forehead- is adorned with a superb headdress with diamonds in the form of flowers and feathers and real bird-of-paradise feathers, as well as a white lace veil that drapes over her left shoulder. In her hand, she clasps a closed fan that is also set with precious stones. A splendid diamond brooch in the form of a flower basket is pinned to her collar, along with other diamonds, earrings and a magnificent belt around her waist. A sash of the Order of María Luisa crosses her bosom and the scallop of the Order of the Eagle and the Star of Isabel Teresa of Austria are affixed to her left shoulder. Painted for her husband and uncle, this nuptial likeness is undoubtedly the most sumptuous of any portrait by Vicente López as well as an eloquent expression of the ostentatious character of this young queen, who was passionate about jewels and other luxurious and eye-catching adornments on her clothing and accessories. It is also a superb example of this Valencian master’s astonishing virtuosity and exceptional technical gifts, which he maintained through his final years
