I’ve been SO busy this past week that I’ve seriously neglected my social media accounts – sorry about that!
I’m getting ready to take a trip up north to Michigan and then on to Canada to pick up a new addition to the kennel and to run dogs with friends. I’m also going to be looking at a touring kennel property that is for sale; though my plans for a long time have been to go to Colorado, the Upper Peninsula of Michigan has always been my first love, and this place is really almost perfect. I know a lot of cool people up there, too, so I figure it is worth checking out! You never know. :)
Blog Sigils for Pack West
I apologize for my relative absence on Tumblr these past few weeks. I’ve been working to set up Pack West Wolfdog Rescue’s official website while puppy-proofing the house in preparation for months to come.
So far, I have put over $2,000.00 of my own funds into establishing this rescue, and it’s become a literal labor of love. We aren’t ready to accept donations officially (I still have to look into some more nonprofit banking options!) but I do have time today to work on a few Blog Sigils.

I’m sure you’ve all been introduced to a pretty blue-eyed husky as half wolf before, it’s all too common and all to dangerous. Huskies and other northern-breed dogs are often mistaken for wolves and shot, trapped, or poisoned due to people who misrepresent them as being “wolves” or “wolfdogs”. People do it because they think wolves and wolfdogs are cool and a status symbol and/or because they were mislead about their animal or other animals they have known or been around. This is why spreading accurate information is so vital.
Wolfdog misrepresentation is a huge problem with numerous real world consequences. Domestic dogs that are misrepresented as (or mistaken for) wolfdogs are euthanized in shelters, confiscated from their owners, and shot by hunters. On the other side of things, real wolfdogs are being purchased by people who expect them to act like regular dogs and they end up being abused, neglected, and even abandoned or killed when their unwitting owners realize they are not as easy to handle as the domestic dogs they were expecting.
In an effort to spread awareness about wolfdog misrepresentation, I made this design and am selling stickers. I need to sell at least 42 stickers to be able to order this batch and have to be paid for before I can get the order started. They are $5 each and every other one you add will only be $2(So 2 would be $7, 3 would be $9 and so on) and $1 for shipping in the U.S., $2 for international. They are diecut so this measurement isn’t 100% exact but they will be 4in tall and roughly 6in long. The details should be more than visible on that size! They will be full color, white polypropylene edge with UV laminate for outdoor durability and scuff resistance.

Video of my current puppies (and yearling Daryl) working on a deer carcass. I have been feeding raw since 2009 and have raised five litters weaned straight to raw. You will find no ground meat in my freezers. I strive to provide whole prey a majority of the year and raise and butcher my own chickens, turkeys, ducks, and pheasants. In summer the logistics of feeding whole prey -- especially large carcasses -- is not always feasible, in which case I feed prey-model.
This “wolf” was shot a few days ago after being discovered in a barn near Wingham, Ontario. The farmer assumed the animal was going to kill his livestock, though further reports that it did no actual damage to his flock. In reality, this “wolf” appears to be a lost husky, who was probably seeking shelter and warmth inside the farmer’s barn. Huskies and other northern-breed dogs are often mistaken for wolves and shot, trapped, or poisoned thanks in part to people who misrepresent them as being “wolves” or “wolfdogs”. Huskies and other northern-breed canines are starkly different in appearance when compared to real wolves, and while it is a hunter’s responsibility to know their target, there does seem to be an influx of folks telling others that their domestic-breed pups are something they are not. When a hunter sees a dog being claimed as a “wolf”, and unwittingly believes that claim, incidents like this are only more likely to occur. Remember: Huskies are no more closely-related to wolves from a genetic standpoint than a doberman or corgi is. They are a primitive breed, however, adapted to a similar climate as wild wolves; and they therefore share some physical similarities, such as long muzzles, double-coats, pointed ears, and thick tails. But when you really start to break it down, the differences are stronger than the similarities. Below are images of a high-content wolfdog (genetically identical to a pure wolf) compared to a husky/northern breed mix (no wolf):
Initially, they may seem similar in coloration and build, but take a closer look: The husky has a much more uniform coat length, bears blue eyes (which are genetically impossible for wolves to have), and displays stark facial markings, thin pointed ears, a wide chest, and very upright stance. The wolf, by contrast, has a varied coat length, including pronounced cheek ruffs, a dorsal cape, and a “mane” around its neck and shoulders. The ears are thick and rounded at the tips, as well as fully-furred on the insides. The eyes are small and slanted, almond-shaped, and are not blue (or dark brown) in color, while the skull has a narrow, arrow-shaped build. Wolves also walk with a very low-to-the-ground posture and will not have curly tails, as some huskies and northern-breed mixes do.

Again: Misrepresenting dogs as “wolves” or “wolfdogs” does far more harm than good. It’s not something to be taken lightly, and really does cause real-world damage in innumerable animals’ lives.

Just a reminder that dog-dogs are sometimes shot (and even stuffed…there’s more out there than just the one I posted!) because people can’t tell the difference between a dog and a wolf. Yes, it is a big deal, with real consequences.
I wanted to reblog this with @nothatisnotawolfdog‘s addition. I had yet to see an actual taxidermied dog but it really makes the message about misrepresentation hit home.

There was a big batch of crab legs in with the usual raw food pick up last Tuesday. I broke them out today and passed them out as treats. There isn't a lot to them and they were pre-boiled, so no real nutritional value -- but they were great enrichment. Some of the dogs had seen them before, but for the younger crew it was a totally novel experience. A toy and a food all in one!
Monday started with William's trip to the vet to make sure there weren't any underlying causes for his wanting to stop running around the 10-15 mile mark. He had a full physical exam and blood panel done and was given a clean bill of health, confirming my suspicions that his "problem" is psychological not physical. Since he has been perfectly happy running up front on the B-team that is where he will stay for the season. Next year we'll see if he has a change of heart or if he still prefers the shorter distances.
After Will's appointment I took the team (minus Kiva who broke a toenail on the previous run) out for a 30 and did lots of leader swapping -- putting Thunder and Russian up front to run next to Bluie and doing lots of switchbacks and gees and haws. They're both coming along nicely with Thunder being the quickest to respond, and Russian being a real forward driving force that keeps the team moving at a steady pace.
I was considering heading up to Gunflint for the coming weekend to do the 23 mile fun-run, but decided against it has the temperatures look like they will be up into the 40s! So it looks like our race season will be winding down and wrapping up. It has been sad to see so many races cancelled again this season, especially since here at Camp Redline we've had such a wonderfully mild and snowy winter to train. But it doesn't affect us that much, as my main goals remain focused on 2018 with Race To The Sky and Eagle Cap. If all goes well, I'll get a camping trip or two in on the trail with the dogs yet to continue our mock check-point practice.
I took the time Tuesday to do another round of my "dogs standing in front of a fence" photography project -- tonight I cropped and re-sized and uploaded to my kennel website to replace the old stacked photos. Just about got everyone now. Just need to do William and Stoli for the main team.
FEBRUARY 10TH, 2016 It has been a strange, half-winter. My dog yard fluctuates between looking like the verge of spring thaw to the familiar scintillating ice-skating rink that prevails at twenty below. Back and forth we go; 30 degree days that make the dogs slog in their traces and eagerly drink their soup at the end of a run -- to 10 below with a windchill that gives them an extra bounce in their step and makes me pile on another layer of clothing.
Things don't appear to be any better further north. Our planned race for this coming weekend was cancelled due to insufficient snow to make the trails safely passable for larger teams. This will be the second race we've entered this year that has been called off.
"The best laid plans of mice and men", as they say.
But despite the lack of races, it has been a pretty phenomenal season for us so far. I'm very happy with where the team is at right now and we are working towards goals aimed more at the 2018 racing season in regards to mileage and speed; even if all our miles have been on the ATV so far!
Dawson, Rick, and William have been officially dropped from the race team pool for the rest of the season.
Dawson suffered a wrist injury two weeks ago, and at 9 years old I'd rather let him rest and heal the remainder of this season so he is ready to go next year, rather than risk making a simple injury into a chronic one just because he seems ready to get back in the game.
Rick has shown a ton of potential since his first run in harness, but is a bit too immature yet to be a full-time team member. He is easily distracted and likes to gawk at the scenery a bit too much. Not surprising as he is only a yearling! I'll still be working with him on the B-team.
William has shown me several times that he prefers to top out at around 10-15 miles, and prefers to run with a smaller team. I believe this is more of a mental issue than a physical one, but he has a vet appointment on Monday to make sure. If the vet gives him a clean bill of health, he'll continue to run on the B-team where he is happier.
The rest of the team is looking absolutely fantastic though and a few of my yearlings are showing surprising potential to run up front, including Inky and Skinner!
