“My heart was beating rapidly, but I knew it was useless. James Potter was my friend, and that was all there was to it.Really. Nothing between us could ever work out. Not that I wanted anything to.But his hands were warm, and his grip was gentle, and at the time, I simply wanted to feel safe.” (x)
The sight of the blush that painted her cheeks caused a rush of affection to wash over James’ chest. He’d always found it cute when she blushed since it was a rare occurrence in itself. He wasn’t left to ponder too long on it, though, because the next thing he knew, their lips had touched. It was far too quick for his liking, though. “Hmmm. It’s my birthday today, that’s all the kiss I get?” he pouted. Just like the past year, by the end of the day, James’ birthday card would be thoroughly scratched for non-stop use for excuses. “What about right now, then? We don’t have classes for the next hour or so.”
Lily shrugged at James’ complaint, a proud grin cumulating onto her face, extending from one ear to the other as she relished in the sight of his pouted lips. “You’ll get much better kisses tonight, don’t worry,” her voice was soft, like a whisper, lingering in the air for a brief moment before she let a laugh slip off of her tongue and through rose painted lips. Lily smiled wholeheartedly at James’ anticipation, taking a hold of his hand and pulling him forward. Merlin, was that boy turning eighteen or eight? “Point taken,” the redhead muttered, carefully inspecting his face with narrowed eyes. “Alright, but first, you have to tell me I am the most brilliant person you’ve ever met, and also that my hair’s better than Sirius’.”
Her expression brought out a light smile from the corner of his lips as he got up and walked with her. “My day is going well, just trying to get used to things.” As they strolled together towards the lake, he started to feel a bit better. “What do you think about all of this? Meeting James, Lily and me?”
“We all are,” Lily chuckled, gazing kindly at the boy beside her. Albus’ next words, however, made Lily momentarily slow down the movement of her feet. She knew she would have to discuss their current situation with her grandchildren rather sooner than later but still, as his words echoed inside her mind, Lily couldn’t help but feel awkwardly nervous. “It's quite strange," the redhead sighed, looking down at her hands, “I mean, it’s great to have some assurance that at least some things will be alright, especially for Harry, but... it’s just a lot to take in at once. I’d love to get to know more about you three, seeing as we’re family and you seem to know an awful lot about James and I already. How... how do you feel about being here?”
“It’s just one of those stories our Uncle would tell us growing up. I always loved it because it was historical in a sense.” Rose smiled nostalgically. “Like the epic love story of the ‘70s that pretty much saved the whole world.”
"When you put it that way, it does seem much more appealing,” Lily pursed her lips before they curled into a light smirk, “We did take a long time to get to the ‘epic love story of the 70s that saved the entire world’, though.”
Dorcas leans over to peer into the cauldron and shakes her head. “Perhaps you did not add enough Billywig stinger.” Her nose wrinkles and her brow twisted slightly. “I think it can be salvaged.”
“Yeah, maybe I didn’t,” Lily mumbled, her brows furrowing as she mirrored Dorcas’ movement, slightly leaning over the cauldron to stare at the orange material lying inside it. “You sure? I reckon it looks hopeless.”
Marlene hugged her back and felt tears roll down her cheeks. “But if it’s wrong, we’ll all die and he’ll be alone.” She cried and held Lily closer. “I just want him to be happy but me as well.”
“But what if it isn’t?” Lily pressed on, ever so slightly pulling away from Marlene as her eyes worryingly observed the girl infront her, “What if we do manage to prevent all of those terrible things?” Slowly unwrapping one of her arms from around Marlene’s body, Lily gently wiped the tears away from the girl’s face, “You’ll both be happy if you’re together, Marls. You should take that into account.”
"A wonderful one," James murmured with a wink. "I thought you agreeing to be my girlfriend was already my birthday present for this year, is all." Truth be told, he hadn’t really thought about his birthday until he woke up that morning, so he hadn’t been expecting any presents at all. And he was being honest that just the fact that Lily was still there, still with him despite everything they’d learned about their future, was better than any present he could receive. "Later? When?"
Lily’s lips curled up into a soft smirk, green eyes glinting brightly as she did so. “Indeed I am,” the redhead teased, biting at her lower lip to try and keep a straight face. James’ next words, however, managed to get a grin from her, slightly flushed cheeks and all. Lily leaned forward and quickly pecked his lips before glancing up, her eyes locked with his as she laughed. “Whenever I feel like it, love.”
Rose smiled at the other girl’s blush. “I’ve always found that very interesting. How you two hated each other but fell in love. It’s very romantic, isn’t it?”
"Oh, our story is anything but romantic, to be fairly honest.” Lily let out a soft chuckle as she gazed up at Rose, “We didn’t hate each other. Antipathy would probably be a better word, but I’m glad to know you think it’s interesting.”
Albus lightly shrugged, “sure, I guess I don’t have anything else better to do.” He knew he should be more thrilled that his grandmother wanted to spend time with him, but he was sure he just disappoint. “So how are you today?”
Lily’s face instantly lit up upon Albus’ response, her excitement getting the best of her as she let out a quick, “Wonderful, come on then!” before making her way outside of the castle. “I’m quite good. Great, actually. What about you, Albus?”
At the sound of getting a birthday present, he perked up, his face lighting up excitedly like an eight-year-old on Christmas day. “You got me a present?” he asked with a wide, toothy smile. “Oh, no, no, no. Sirius ain’t gettin’ that, it’s mine.” He’d been told time and time again before that he could be quite a child on his birthday. That was the point, in his opinion. “What is it?”
James’ reaction to her words brought an instant grin to Lily’s face. She didn’t get to see her boyfriend this excited on a daily basis and it amazed her just how fast he managed to light up the entire room with his enthusiasm. “Of course I did, what kind of girlfriend do you think I am?” Lily playfully scoffed, trying to hold back a laugh. “I’m not telling you what it is, you’ll have to see for yourself later!”
That’s what birthdays are for, Evans. You get a golden ticket to boss people around and get away with it.
Good thing I haven’t given you your birthday present just yet, then! I’ll make sure Sirius gets it as soon as you try to boss me around.
“You two are dating, aren’t you?” Rose asked, already knowing the answer.
As soon as Rose finished her question, Lily glanced down at her cauldron in a pointless attempt to hide her flushed cheeks. “We are, actually,” she said with a nod of her head, “We’ve been together for a few months now.”
“I’ve been alright,” she said, tucking a strand of hair behind her ear, “Adjusting well enough, I suppose. How have you been?”
"That’s good to hear,” Lily said, shooting Rose a friendly smile, “I’ve been quite good, actually. James’ birthday drove me crazy but I managed to recover from it.”
I need a cure for my boredom…
Would you fancy paying the Black Lake a little visit? I’ve also got some Chocolate Frogs with me if the lake isn’t enough to convince you.

No one frowns today—that is the rule. Or else…
Your birthday has barely started and you’re already bossing everyone around? Shame on you, Potter.
Marlene shook her head. “You’re just like your boyfriend.” She sighed and rubbed her arms. “I’m scared though, Lils. Really scared.” She felt tears come to her eyes and she wiped them away quickly. “If I give him a chance and I die, he’s going to be hurt. And if we do this, what if he figures out I’m not good enough and leaves me?”
Marlene’s response rendered the redhead silent for a few moments. As she let out a soft sigh, Lily took a step forward and wrapped her arms around her best friend. “I know, Marls,” she said, gently rubbing Marlene’s back, “We’re all bloody terrified right now, but you can’t let that influence your decision. You are good enough and Sirius is very much aware of that. Besides, there’s still a chance our fates might change and we all get to grow old together, so that shouldn’t stop you from following your heart."
