I saw the backrooms recently and I thought it was good! I was just expecting a silly/campy "run away from the monster" type movie, but was pleasantly surprised with how creative it got with it's concept 👌
I read they’re talking about a sequel. I haven’t seen it yet so I don’t know but does it end where a sequel seems possible?
I feel I differ from the general consensus on the Backrooms movie. I didn't like it. It was beautifully shot and captured the essence of the rooms with the set so well, but I left feeling like that's the only thing it did well. The plot felt very disjointed to me, like two different movies stitched together in the middle. I think the theme it was trying to communicate was a great one to explore with the Backrooms, it ultimately fell flat for me because of how it almost felt like the movie was just jumping around. I also didn't find it scary or uncomfortable like I hear a lot of people saying. The horror is heavily dependent on the eerie vibes of the Backrooms which I'm sure worked very well for others, but it just didn't land with me. Otherwise I'd say there's one or two tense sequences that I didn't find very frightening either. If anything, I found myself bored.
Overall, the plot and characters didn't really "click" with me for a lack of a better way to phrase it and I left the theatre disappointed. The pacing was interesting at certain moments too, though fine when considering the whole thing.
While I personally didn't enjoy this, I can somewhat understand how someone else could. It is incredibly faithful and effective in its visuals, even if other elements didn't work for me. If you're interested in watching this film, I'd encourage you to watch it, but I wouldn't recommend it to anyone without interest in it beforehand. For a director so young, however, it is a great start and I'd be interested in seeing his future work.
1.5/5. Okay movie, not for me.
Well-written, thanks. Should be interesting to see what happens with the director after this.
